44 The Mining and Scientific Press,
Horse Hors.—We learn from the Stockton Independent that E, W. Walltan of that
city, has assigned a share of the patent issued for an improvement in horse hoes to
W. H. Derrick, of tbe samecity. This hoe
will nudoubtedly prove of incalculable
benefit to farmers in tbe cultivation of
grapes, corn, cotton, tobacco, and, indeed,
of any crop which requires the freqnent
stirring of tbe soil, either for the purpose
of retaining moistnre, or for kiling the
grass and weeds. The beam of the hoe is
like the beam of the ordinary horse hoe, or
the one-horse plow, but there the resemblance ends. ‘The handles, at their former
end, are attached to a plate of iron throngb
which a bolt extending upward from or
through the beam, passes, this bolt constituting a pivot upon which the handles turn,
laterally, in either direction. Between tbe
handles, and nearly over the end of the
beam, is a regulating brace, provided with
several holes, into any of which the iron stay
or support, extending upward from the end
of the beam, may pass.
brace is that the handles may be set, so
that in plowing among grape vines, tobacco,
corn or cotton, tbe handles can be arranged
at will, in line or ont of line with the beam,
and the hands be freed from contact with
the row being plowed, while the person
holding the hoe walks in the center between
the rows, and the hoe itself works close to
one or the otber of the rows. The standard
of the boe is in two parts, and ‘constitutes
both standard and brace. The front and
rear edges of these paris are provided, at
their base, with notches which catch upon,
and are firmly held in, the boe point, by
imeans of a wedge which drops between the
two parts of the standard, and holds tbe
point and standard as firmly together as if
they were one piece. The hoe point is reyersible, and is provided with a mortise
throngh its center for the reception of the
double standard and wedge. The shares,
which are also reversible, extend both ways
from the point at an angle not greater than
90° from each other. Each of these sbares
is provided witb two sharp cntting edges,
for tbe purpose of economy, and also that
the natural use and wear of the shares may
effect the sharpening of their own edges,
The object of this .
for the use of the front edges are found to
wear most rapidly uponthe under side ;).
and by the novel provisions of the inventor, .
the shares are readily turned and the used .
edge presented, or it is changed end for
end, and a sharp edge is presented to the
suil and weeds, without recourse to a black:
smith. Another prominent feature of this
hoe is that a small mold board is attached
toward the outer end of one or both its
shares, the purpose of which is the throwing of a small quantity of soil to the row
when desired, while, at the same time, the
great body of the soil and weeds, which has
been cut and lifted up by the sbares, is
dropped loosely behind tbe hoe. ‘We are
informed that the hoe, in its workings, exceeds the most sanguine expectations of the
inventor.
