The Mining and Scientific Press. —_ Weekly Stock Circular. By Associated Brokers of ths. F. Stock and Exchange Beard San Francisco, March 2, 1&9. Finmanctal. Froin the Commercial Herald we take the following: Since our last jeeue we have been favored with refreshing showers, which have greatly assured the farming community, and promise to crown their jubors with an buprecedented harvest. As we write the pluitial boun. ties are becoming moro eopious and appear to extend over a wide ficid, with every prospect of au abuudant supply. On tho Sierra Nevadas aud east of that range much snow has faiien, clogging the railroads and hindering communication with these districts. The Central Pacific Rallroad la so pressed to transport its own effects in order to completo the enterprise at the carllest possible day, that orders have been reecived bere to ship merchandise hy the ofd-fashioned methods, It is unneces. #ary to cxpiain thut 60 soon as the railroad shall be compirted all Its ayailablo facilities will be placed within reach of the public, Largo amounts of Eastern capital arv finding their way here for carly investment in White Pine mining and reai estate stock, and wo learn that vigOrous efforts will be mude to divert the trado of that section and Sait Lake from San Francisco. They must all proyo yain, for thero is nothing which Chieago or any other Enstern city can supply so cheapiy as tho Metropolis of tho Pacific. Especially is this true in reference to all sorta of grocerles, such as salt, spices, sugar, tea, coffee, soap, candies, and the like. In the matter of fruits, silk and woolen goods, limber, machinery, etc., there can be no competition against us. The North Pacific Transportation Company filed its certificate of incorporation in the County Clerk's office ou the 13th of Mareh. Its capital stock is $5,000,000, divided into 50,000 shares at $100 per sharo. The Trustees aro Jesse Holladay, William Alvord, W. C, Ralston, Loyd Tovis, Alvinza Hayward and S. F. Butterworth. Its objects purport to bo the t tation of 3 and freight on tho waters of tho Pacific ocean and ali the rivers and bays accessihle from it, and to transact all other busiuess necessary to carry out the design, Tho Commissioner of Immigration has obtained a 6atisfactory settlemeut of his claims upou various partics who have long contended against tho colicction of the State tux as being ilicgai. Wo understand that tho claim against Koopmanschan & Co, was withdrawn’ on the paymeut of $20,000 hy that firm. This was the last of the iot, with tho exeeption of a claim against tho Pacific Mail Company for the tax npon six Chincse, which hus, hy agreement, heen referred to the Courts, to be setiicd upon tho intrinsic merits of the case. City Stocks. Increased interest has heen manifested in miscellaneous securities, and the sales during the period under review have hcen very considernhle. Spring Valley Water stock sold to the extent of 395 shares at a nniform rate of $68 per share. San Francisco Gas stock was in the market at $78@77 50, and North Beach and Mission Railroad at $72@71 50. A few shares of Sacrawnento Gas Company stock were disposed of at $95 per share. The annual meeting of stockholders will be held at Wells, Fargo & Co’s office, in this city, on the 30th inst. This company has heen paying regular monthly dividends of 4% per ecnt. For California Steam Navigation Company stoek 70 per cent. is hid. A dividend of 1 per cent. npon their capital stock was dishursed on the 15th inst. The last previous dividend was paid in Octoher, 1868. The State Telegraph Company also dishursed a dividend of 1 per ccnt. on the 15th. This is anuounced as their tri-annual dividend. The last previous dividend was paid in July, 1868, amonnting to $1 per share. At the annual mecting of the San Franciseo Insurance Company, held on the 16th inst.,‘John Archhald was elected President and R. B. Woodward Vice-President. This company is winding np its husiness, and these officers were elected in order to legalize the signing over of mortgages, etc., in their possession. The accrued earnings of the assets enables them to disburse a dividend of 2 per cent. per month on ‘the first of April next. Mining Share Market. This market has heen more or less demoralized since our last reference. Prices have been very generally irregular and fitful, effecting a serious decline in a nnmber of stocks, while others have been barely able to maintain themselves under the strong ‘‘ bear” pressure which was very ohservahle. This state of things indnecd many to let their stocks ‘‘slide,’’ while others, who are commencing to operate in White Pine elaims, also appear inchned to drop the Washoe line and hrace themselves for a vigorous eampaign in the new and more exciting Speculative struggle soon to he inaugurated in our mining share market. Hundreds of White Pine companies have already heen ineorporated and additions are daily made to the numher. Many have placed their claims in the hands ot skillfnl manipulators, and it will ho as well to scrutinize them closely, Non-speculative in. vesters will prohahly ipo more to actnal developments than verhal reports, and pay more attention to results than to anticipations. Axrua—receded from $38 to $27 50, improved to $33, and closed at $31 25. On the 17th, the north drift nnder the east clay, on the 1,030 level, was in 15 fect, and the quartz is reported to look very favorahle, hnt as yet shows no pay. Thero is a slight increase of water in the face of the drift. CuHoLian-Potosi—has heen in moderate request, selling at $166@157, and at the close realizing $161. During the week ending March 12th, S44 tons of ore were extracted. In the new tunnel the ore has been stoped for a distance of ahout 90 feet in length, varying in width from 8 to 20 fect. Up to this date it is reported there aro no evidences that this deposit . s extends much below the tunnel level. In the shaft work was suspended at the 920 level on the 8th inst. The only drift now being run on the lower Ievels is at the 1,240 station, which extends 129 feet from the incline, and 500 feet east from the shaft. The rock is hard and there are no indications of quartz in any portion of it. On the 16th inst. 110 tons of ore were shipped to custom mills. Crows Pomt—opened at $75 50, declined to $71 50, and closed at $71 50. Nothing of importance from the mine so far as we ean learn. Work is now rapidly prosecuted at the hottom of the shaft, with the pnrpose of soon resuming the further sinking of the shaft. Haze & Norcross—sold quite largely at an advance, rising to $98 on the 17th, and closing yesterday at $91. They are breasting ont ore on the fonrth level, hoth north and south of the winze, and it is said to he of good quality, showing an average width of 544 fect and 275 feet in length. The winze extending from the third level down, 2 depth of 130 feet, shows continnous ore within 15 feet of the third level, and is of an average width of about 8% feet. From the fourth to tho fifth level the winze is 53 feet in depth; ore good, and now five feet wide in the winze. A drift is being run to connect with the winze on the fifth level, and where the ore is cut on that level the vein is twelve feet wide and looking well. Since the annnal meeting they have been extracting from 55 to 60 tons of ore per day. Imprer14t—dropped from $103 to $85, and elosed at $87. FEarrHquake-PRoor Cuimneys.—We noticed at No. 749 Market street three very large galvanized ironchimneys, the outside being an octagon shaft, with ornamental cap and base, fourteen feet in hight, with an averaze width of four feet. Within the shaft are fonr heavy iron flues to convey the smoke—the whole being firmly riveted and making a very substantial chimney. No external hracing is required, as the apparatns is held in place by angle irons attached inside the flues, extending down and fastened to the brick work of the chimney below the roof. It is thought by Messrs. Conlin & Roberts, by whom they are built, to answer all the Yequirements of an earthquake region. They are intended for Mr. Thos. H. Tae Repemprion or Tive Lanps on the San Joaquiu, at and around Sherman Islland, is estimated by a correspondent of the Sacramento Union, at a probable cost of from three to five dollars per acre. When reclaimed they would be worth from twentyto thirty dollars per acre, with a prospective increase to forty or fifty. In very severe winters, like 61-2, these lands would be flooded, but not snbject to any currents. The dykes, dams, and ditches, used for reclamation, wonld remain uninjured, while the rich alluvial deposits of the flood would add additional riohness to the soil. After reclamation the crops of grain and staple products would be certain every year. Rice evidently, ho says, could be cultivated on these islands. The soil is rich, and the means of reclamation would afford the same convenicuce and cheap process which havo been long practiced in the Carolinas; that is to say, make the water do the work. Damserected across the mouth ofthesloughs would check the tide-water, and also form a reservoir from which the field of rice conld be flooded at pleasure. No grain, on lands situated as these are, can be cultivated more cheaply than rice, It requires but asmall quantity of seed forthe crop, and, having the convenience of flooding the land, the principal cost is the gathering. Tue Recom.—The partics who thonght to lessen the popularity of the Phantation Birrers by alleging that, under a different name, the same article effected the most astonishing cures in the West Indies thirty years ago, have afforded the world another proof that malice and envy often defeat their own objects, and give new ype estige to that which they would fain diseredit and destroy. The proprietors of the Puantation Brrrers, Messrs. Drake & Co., while acknowedging the origin of the preparation, have had an opportunity of showing that, the rare elixir admitted, even by its interested enemies, to he so wonderfully potent before it ehanged hands, has had its remedial properties almost doubled by the addition of anew ingredient—Calisaya Bark—since it hecame the property of its present owners. It,therefore, it was so nearly infallihle in cases of inter mittent and remittent fever, dyspepsia, hiliousness, ete. he then, it mnst he quite so now. Our Office.
