This is notably so in our public libraries, and in warehouses and shops. I obtained so many striking proof of this, especiaily from the libraries of the Atheneonm Club House, the London Institntion, the College of Surgeons, and elsewhere, that I made them the subject of a special report to the anthorities in 1854, and here yuu will see the specimens of covers of books which were furnished to me at that time. If you apply a picce of the leather to your tongue, yon will taste its acidity, and if it be treated with water or spirit of wine and tested with a solution of baryta, it will be found that the acid is snlphuric acid. These effects were observed many years ago, in the library uf the Athcnsenm Club House, and they wero growing to be so serions, that the managers requested a commission of chemists, including Doctor Prout, Mr. Aiken and others to inqnire into it, and I have before mea copy of their report on the subject. It is to the effect that the mischief is clearly due to the presence of snlphurie acid, which had come from the burning gas; and they state that the mischief will continue as long as gas is used in the library without proper ventilation. Mr. Faraday therenpon designed the system of ventilatiou which is still used in the library. As to the effects of the products of buruing gas on shop-goods, thoy are notorious, for snch goods are rogularly disposed of as damaged or gassy things, It has been remarked, toe, that plants are quickly killed by tho products of burning gas, for they are peculiarly susceptible of injury from the presence of sulphurons avid in the air ; according to Drs. Christison and Farmer, as little as one part in 10,000 of air will kill plants in less than 94honrs, And you cannot use gas ina conservatory, either for heating or for illuminating purposes, nnolesy the prodnets of combustion are entirely removed. Dr, Christison has written to me very strongly on this snbject ; and he attributed the absence of flowers aud plants from the rooms of Edinburgh to the cirenmstance that gas is nniversally used in them. Advancing a step further in my inquiries, I ascertained that the water produced by bnrning gas, collect it how yon will, is always acid, and will rot leather, paper, cotton, and linen, Here are specimens of such tissues, which have been dipped in the condensed liquid products of gas combustion, and you will observe that they are as rotten as tinder.” Canans AnD Jiatuways. —The Erie Canal, originally built for vessels of sixty tous, has just been enlarged for those of 250 tons, and its increasing traflic already demands an enlargement for vessels of 1,000 tons. Of the traffic of the great West it now cartics more than all of the great trnnk lines of railway between the St. Lawrence and the Potomac. One canal boat carries more tonnage than a freight train, and the Erie Canal brings daily to tide-water more than five times as much tonuage as the New York Central. Its tonnage exceeds that of all the foreign commerce of this city.—Hon. W. J. DcAlnine. Mining Tirtes.—The Nevada Gazette, in an article on obtaining title to mineral lands, says that miners should have a fnll and complete title to their mineral locaIt very properly suggests that there should be a land oltive exclusively for that mineral district, and that miners should not be compelled to go to Marysville or Sacramento, into purely agricultural districts, and put to great expense in proving up their titles and fighting their way throngh the tortuous intricacies of the law. All that the miners demand is that they be put upon an equal footing with ranch men. As the law now stands, the burden of proof is entirely against the miners, and it takes four times as long a time, and infinitely more tronble and expense for them to obtain a title. i A Portuanp mechanic has made a fine : eambric needle which can be nuscrewed, and which contains, in a hollow within, another smaller needle.
