“White Pine Summary.
Continued had weather during the past
few weeks lias given idlo peoplo and
eorrespondonts antple oceasion to see tho
future of Whito Pine in its most unfavorable light; the results heing visible in a still
larger proportion of unfavorable editorials
this week, in our exchanges from this
State, ns well ns from Nevada. Rumors
are cirenlating in this city that the half
dozen lending chlorido mines havo been
sucking their rich ores, to send below, and
to New York, with a view to selling the
mines on the strength of what has heen
fonnd near the surface. In certain quarters a growing confidence iu tho base metal
ronge is also noticeable. White Pine
stock has heen selling vory slowly, in San
Francisco as well as in New York ; so that
there is no danger of the Whito Pine minea
being valned for much more than they will
provo to be worth, except by those who
huve gone into mining as they would into
gaming. Travel on the Central Pacific
Hailroad has fallen off twenty per cent.,
and tbe tent makers iu this city,—who nre
furnishing the housing for the summer’a
army of occupation in our great interior—
report a marked decrease in their orders.
Freight to Hamilton has heen reduced from
30 to 20 cents per pouud, All kinds of
goods, and especially stores, are very cheap
at White Pine. No very marked increase
is shown in the shipments of bullion, the
totel to date, from White Pine district,
heing nbout a million nnd a quarter.
Rico DrevevorpmMents—Tur Caurrornta.
The White Pine News of April 7th, says the
Cnlifornia mine rivals the Eberhardt in extent and the quality of its ore. ‘The California is situated on a low bench of Treasnre Hill, half a mile east of Shermantown.
The ledge is stripped for 100 feet, nnd is
abont forty-five fect in width. The ore
was covered hy four or five inches of dirt,
which being removed leaves the whole surface of the ledge exposed, and tho entire
mass is ood milling ore, running by assay
from $100 to $8,000 pertou. * * “Inland
Limpire. April 2d, says of the California:
Some idea of the wonderful ricliness of this
mine may be gathered from the fact that
the ore—a mass of argillaceous matter, resembling amalgam—after stripping off the
surface dirt, is shoveled iuto sacks, and that
much of it, by the simple process of smeltinz, yields from $3 to $£ per pound. A
ball of this ore submitted to the blowpipe
is almost instuntly covered over with glohules of pure silver. The most wonderful
feature of the minc, however, is the vast
quantity of this rich ore now in sight.
Buack Horner.—This claim at the southern point of Treasure Hill, was recently,
says the Eimpire, the scene of some excitoment in consequence of the development of
a mass of chloride ore four feet wide
“* whieh is fully equal to the richest of the
Eherhardt or California.” * * Same of
4th says: We understand that the owners of
the California mino have put meu to work
to ascertain whether the Black Hornet isa
spnr of the California or a distinct lead.
The owners of the Black Hornet are perfectly satisfied with the arrangement, as
they kuow that there are 50 feet of solid
limestouo between the two leads, similar in
character and rich heyond computation.
Stanpine Sronz.—Himpire of 2d, says:
“ Dr. S. A. McMeans has taken the superinteudency of the Standing Stone mine, at
Mahogany Grove or Eberhardt City.” * *
Same of 4th: ‘We understand that Dr,
McMeans has struck the pure stuff in his
Stauding Stone mine nt Eberhardt City.
Hor tho workmen have taken out cousiderable qunntities of metallic silver, and the
Doctor has extended an invitation to a number of friends to visit the miue to-day and
aee the curiosity.
Mrxor Irems—Litrttz Monrtor.—Thia
mine, which is located on the Califorvia
belt, presents very encouraging prospects,
and ere long may fully equal in richness
the California or Black Hornet. * * Recently the Great Union Tunneling Co. advertised for sealed proposals to drive a tunnel in a distance of 200 feet, with the
privilege on the part of the bidder to continue the tunnel to 500 feet. Over forty
bids were put in.
Lapy Wasuineton, No. 3.—Col. John
Kerr, Supterintendeut aud one of the principal owners of this mine, situated near
Eberhardt City, is pushing work upon it
with vigor and with the most flattering success, <A largo body of very tine chloride
has heen devclopod.
Buurion. — Wells, Fargo & Co. dispatched
from tho Hamilton office, yesterday, six
hars of bullion, valued at $12,000,
Sracex Warer.—T, M. Luther and Jerry
Huey have been engaged in driving a tunnelin tho ravine below Shermantown for
the purpose of procuring a supply of water
for milling. We learn from the News of
the 7th that their efforts have been successful. * * The quartz mill at Shermantown, built hy L. B. Mooro and GC. O.
Barker—formerly the Butte of New York
Caton, north of Austin—has recently becn
purchased by Drake & Applegarth for the
sum of $40 000,
New Tunnevina Co.—The California
State Tunneling and Mining Co. have undertaken to penetrate Treasure Hill from n
point about 1,000 feet south of the Eberhardt, running nearly north for a distance
of 2,400 feet, and terminating beneath
Pogonip Plat. It will make a alight deflection to the west, in order to pass the
main Eberhardt ground, but will pierce the
west extension of that mine at a depth of
400 feet from the surface. There are a
great number of good mines along the line
of the proposed tunnel. Work has already
been commenced and the discovery of a
promising ledge was made at the start.
They claim tho exclusive right of tunnelway for a width of 100 feet on each side of
their line, ond will claim 2,400 feet on each
ledge they may discover. The members of
this company chietiy hail from the valley
of San José, Cal.
Buack CLoup.—White Pine News, April
7th: The Black Clond is situated on the
southern slope of Treasnre Hill, a short
distance south of the Eberhardt. Yesterday we learned that a rich strike had been
made in the Black Cloud at a depth of but
fifteen feet, and another nearer the surface.
Bicas.—In the Biggs’ mine, about half a
mile from here, rock has been blasted out
which is pronounced good by experts. On
the Treasure Street Range blasting is continuous, and the exhibitions are such as to
encourage those engaged iu its exploration,
We have heard of some fine discoveries near
the Argyle claim at Treasure, but the particulars are, for the nonce, withheld,—Jnland Empire, 9th. ’
“Vern” vs. ‘‘Deposit.”—-The White
Pine News of April 8d says: Those who
contend that the silver ores of Treasure
Hill are only in small deposits, and not in
fissure veins, would do well to examine the
vein containing the Phoenix, Parker and
Featherstone mines. On the grade leading
to the Hamilton is seen the opening of the
Phoenix, which attracts attention from the
regularity of its formation and the richness
of itsores. The opening is not very extensive, but some forty or fifty tons of very
valuable ore is walled up hy the side of the
road. The foot wall aeems the only one
found, and from appearances we ahould
judge the main ledge to be about 50 feet in
thickness. Tracing the vein northerly, the
Parker, which is an extension of the Phoenix,
is found. , Still further to the north is the
Featberstone. Here the vein is more thoroughly opened. Any one examining it will
not hesitate to pronounce it a true vein of
great size and value. Its casings are as
distinctly marked a; the leaves of a book,
and its strike and pitch regular.
Rozinson Disrrict.—A private letter of
date March 30th, descrihes this district and
its advantageous situation, It is seven miles
from Steptoe Valley, oue of the finest in
tho State. It is 30 miles east of Hamilton,
although it is 45 miles travol from that
place. Among its ledges, the Elijah is 18
feet wide, and essays from $300 to $400
per ton. The City of London, the Rio
Grande, and the Flying Cloud, all have
croppiugs from 10 to 50 feet high. The}
writer goes on to say: ‘‘ thoreis more metal
in sight here than . ever sawin the Savage,
Cnrry, and all the mines put together ;
plenty of wood and water, good roads and
grass, and also a salt mine, and ores can be
reduced as cheap here as in Washoe.”
Sysrematic Expioration.—Ou Mouday
last there left Sacramento, says the Union,
for White Pine district, a scientifie expedition composed of Lientenant-Colonel C.
S. Drew and J. W. Drew, late of the United
Statea Army; Frank E. Brown, geologist ;
Willie Brown, Hermann Richter, aurveyov
and topographer, and S. M. Holdredge,
artist. They will remain in the field about
three months, and probably extend their
explorations as far sonth as the Colorado
river. ‘hey have a complete outfit, including a thorough-brace Concord wagon
and harness, etc,, for two or four animals,
. saddles and equipments; portable furnace,
chronometer, surveying instruments, batrometer, thermometers, chemicals, ete.
Treasure City correspondeut of the San
Francisco Herald : .
New developments are being made daily.
Yesterday I visited the Rogers mine, which
is situnted about 2,000 feet helow the Eberhardt, on what is known ns East Eberhardt
Hill. MNeeent developments have sbown it
to bo one of the richest mines in the district, and so far as it has been developed,
it shows a well defined fissure vein. It
can he traced abont 500 feet. Three assays
of tho oro have been made, ranging from
$3882 to $1,000 perton. ‘The shaft is about
five feet deep, and the opening about nine
feet wido, which is the width of the ledge.
The Enecklin mine is sitnated about 400
feet northeast of tho Eberhardt, and is
coning into notoriety rapidly. They have
no shaft down ahout 25 feet. They are now
in good milling ore, and there is every appearanco of its becoming a second Eberhardt. It is, moreover, easy of access,
Seymour Disrrrer.—Jrland Empire, of
April 9th, says this district was discovered
abont two months ago hy John Centers.
The locality isin a line nearly duo south
from Hamilton, and distont about 80 miles.
It is not far from Patterson District. The
ledges of Seymonr are from ten feet upward, the Black Warrior being abont 80
feet wide, so far as prospected. We were
shown samples of the rock of the district
yesterday, and have no hesitation in saying
that whnt we saw is exceedingly rich. The
Black Warrior lode has produced specimens which yielded over $5,000 to the ton.
John Centers says be kept bis discoveries
a secret as long as he could, and until he
procured all the locations he wanted. He
describes the country as being well wooded
and watered.
Catirornia Patents Issurp.—We give,
to-day, quite a large list and description of
