BLAEE’S PATENT STEAM PUDIP.
TheSteam Pamp, whieh ls an Independent Pump (or steam englno and pump eombined) ls eomparativoly a new
invention. It has, however, gained much favor with mechanics, and now seems to be coming into general use. The
Pump, of whieh the aceomnansing eueringas a pe presen tat oTy is the Inventlun of Mr. Goorge F. Biake, of Baston.
A poor deserlption only ean be givon of it without a diagram of Its Interlor mechanism. The water cylinder Is shown
In the left hand side of the eut, underneath the alrehamber. This eylindor may be made either of brass or cast iron,
bat brass valve seats, and both hard rubber and brass valves aro used. The water is taken in at the lower aperturo, an
there are openings on both sides, for eonventence ot suction and diseharge pipes. It is a double-action pump, having
donble water valves, which are very simple. The wateris drawn in and foreed out from both sides of the piston head,
whieh, with tho strong and ample copper air-ehamber directly over tho valves, a up a eonstant and laige fiow
when the puinp is in operation The steam eylinder in ordinary sizes is about double the size of the water eylinder.
The small eylinder, direetly over the steam eylinder, eontains the steam valve, wbieh 1s operated entirely by steam,
having an auxillary valve, which is opened by the arm shown on tho piston rod, with cach stroke, jnst sufficient to allow
the steam to work the main valve quiekly. This main valvo Is eylindmeal, and by a patent deviee of Mr. Blake’s Is
perfeetly balaneed, thereby overeoming afl frietion or pressure ot steam, ani allowing it to slide with the
griatest facility, as the steam Js admitied at elther end of tho valve eylinder. The construction of the valve and
auxillary valvois sneli that IT 18 IMPOSSIBLE fortho piston TO STOP "ON THE CENTER," whieh was a gencral
fault with steam pumps prior to adopting the plan of driving the valve liself by steam. g
This Pump took the first prizevt the M irvtand Institute in 1863; the gold medal of tho Middlesex Meehanle Assoelation of Massnehusetts, the same year, and the cold medal of the Massachusetts Charitable Meehanies’ Assoclation;
the New Hampshire Meehanles' Association, and the Iowa State Pair, in 1567.
It is positive under any pressure; may be run AS SLUW OR FAST AS MAY BS DESTRED; will discharge more
water than others of samo dimenstons. The steam part being cast In ono entire picee obviates the trouble ot aa
joints The steam valve is perteetly halaneed, and it WILL START AY ANY POINT of the stroko, and discharge al
the water of condensation. These Pumps are how very generally employed at the Hast as BOILER PEERDERS; in
SUGAR HOUSES, BREWERIES, TANNEBIES, STEAMBOATS, Ete.,
And for MINING AND FIRE PURPOSES, twelve different sizes being now in the market, adapted to elasses of work
varying frum a discharge of twenty to three thonsand gallons per miuute.
