SCIENTIFIC PRESS. [Janvary 1, 1876. oe . Mining Summary. THe following information is gleaned mostly from . ournals published in the interior, in close proximity o the mines mentioned. California. ALPIRE COUNTY. M. C. Tuxnez,—Miner, Dec. 18th: Hard rock has set the hovs hack for some days. Several bodies have been cut and ore can be taken out at any time after a process is decided upon. Lumber for the chute to convey ore to the road, is heing delivered. StEetereLotT.—This fnrnace has been inspected with reference to its use on our ores, and it is thought this plan or something similar, will he just the thing for Alpine. PENNSYLVANIA.—The result of the working of some ore from this mine, as per certificate of W. T. Rickard, is as follows: Value per ton, silver, $97.40; gold, $5.26; total, $102.56. ANIADOR COUNTY. Kennepy.—Dispaich, Dee. 25th: It is rumored that this mine has been sold for $80,000. We know that some very rich rock has been taken out lately. New Worss.—Burr and Breedlove are erecting new chlorination works, at Sutter Creek. These gentlemen have an oven alyeady in operation, but its capacity is not sufficient to meet the demand on them for working sulphurets. Conry.—We learn from good anthority that work will be resumed on this mine between this and the first of March. Puacer Mrxinc.—Very little of this has been done in this section for ten years, and it is the opinion of good miners that good diggings can yet be found, The price of water is not so high as formerly. CALAVERAS COUNTY. Treus.—Chronicle, 25th: The claim of Brackett & Co. is again heing worked. A number of hands are drifting, and the mill is kept constantly running..Charles Harkins has sold out to Connelly & Brennan. During the past six months this mine has paid a profit of uearly $15,000. Guzneor Disrrict.—Barney & Co. have ent the vein with their drain tunnel, and are, taking out very rich rock. Timhy & Howarth have had a crushing of 40 tons of rock that yielded $30 per ton. Peter Gass has struck a veiu—parallel with Barney & Co’s claim—the rock of which is said to be held together with gold. This is the ninth rich claim Gass has found in the past year. Ramroap.— Quartz claims turuing out well and work vigorously pushed. The mill on the Petticoat is progressiug finely —hboiler in place, engine set up and the building nearly completed. It is rumored that Mr, Gashwiler will commence operations on the claim he bought from the Lewis Brothers abont New Year. Honston & Poe had 40 tons of rocks, recently, which netted $800. Monrror Camp.—Cor. of same: A new company have taken hold of the old Merrimac claim, erected an engiue, and are about ready to recommence sinking. Bigelow, Wright & Co., in the Monitor claim, have struck richer gravel than has ever been taken from the mine before. They are sinking a new shaft, The adjoining claim on the uorth has been located by Evans & Co., and operations will be shortly commenced. The Jackson Co. are taking out rich gravel, as usual. The Harkins mine continues to pay as well as ever. Last Saturday they had another large clean up—over three hundred ounces of gold—the result of the labor of eight men five weels. I was shown a piece of rock from the Davis claim, Central Hill, that was about half gold. With a shaft 25 feet in depth this claim shows a load three feet wide. Mr. Davis has perfectedarrangements to work the mine next summer. Monitor will yet be the liveliest camp in Calaveras. LOS ANGELES COUNTY. New Puacers.—News, 18th: We understand that rich placer mines have been discovered near the head waters of the San Gabriel, in the mountain gorges betweeu the river and Little creek. Parties have left this city to investigate the trnth of the reports, NEVADA COUNTY. Buxzion.— Gazetie, 22d: The Eureka Co, shipped on Tuesday to San Francisco $23,000, the result of twelve days’ run of their rill, ** Gop’s Country.” —Caddy & Dower are erecting an eight-stamp mill, two and a half miles from the Jim or Mutnal mine, They have a four-foot ledge. Their mill yill be running in two months, The Jim run their 5-stamp mill night and day, ernshing 15 tons in 24 hours, They have ions to last the winter. As the snow is deep in this region, knowu as ‘‘God’s Country,” it is necessary to have supplies hanled during the summer, Black & Young's mill is employed night and day on good pay rock, and its owners intend to keep it running all winter. Tas Nortsa Bioomrmip Co’s Dai— General Alexauder has made an elaborate report upon this structure, showing it to he sufficiently strong for the present pressure, and pointing out what will be necessary when it is carried 15 feet higher as is intended. The present height is 48 feet. Srarrep Up.—Grass Valley Union, 28th: The machinery for the West Eureka mine was completed Saturday, and put in motion. Everything worked well and the mine was soon freed of water. Goop Rock. Same of 23d: We were shown, yesterday, some specimens from the MeClellau Co’s ledge. They were full of sulphurets and showed, also, free gold in coarse pieces, Severs Wrataer.—The Transcripi of the Q4th says: The cold snap of the past few days has been more severe than for years. The Omega ditch is frozen from top to bottom. This has not ocenred before in 16 years. The miners in the upper part of the county can do nothing until a ‘‘ thaw ” comes. Tue Ipano.—WNational, 2ist: The U.S. patent for the Idaho mine was filed for record in the Recorder’s office yesterday. The patent emhraces a tract of seven acres and eighteen hundredths, and extends 8,100 feet along the ledge. PLACER COUNTY. Durer Fuar.—Cor. of the Auburn Stars and Stripes, Dee. 23d: ‘* Owing to the searcity of water, very little mining is being done, although most of the claims are ready, The owners of many claims have worked off the surface, and but few have ground that can he worked without running tunnels and opening up on a lower level; some of them hold back, waiting for capital to come in and buy them out. A company of San Francisco capitalists recently purchased the claims of the Ohio & Cologne Co.; they have been drifting and crushing the dirt with astonishing results; they intend purchasing more ground. We had an excitemeut a few days since in consequence of the discovery of a quartz lode on the head of Squire’s Canou; in the croppings it was very rich, but the vein was rather small and not easily traced; only two locations have been made on it; they have sunk two shafts on it with encouraging results. PLUNIAS COUNTY. Stoprep.—Quiney National, 18th: The Enreka Mills, at Jamison, have stopped until spring opens. Tho hands will be kept employed in taking out rock during the interval, Srruck Pay.—Billman & Richards, who haye heen runuiug an incline tunnel near the old Great Western claims at Newtown, have fouud good pay dirt. As yet they have not struck bed-rock; but the gravel prospects as high as two bits to the pan. Crescent.—The machinery having all been repaired, the mill commenced crushing rock last week, ASsEssMENT.—The Mountaineer Co., at Sawpit Flat, has levied an assessment of $10 to the share. SISKIYOU COUNTY. Quarrz.-—Oregon Sentinel, 18th: Nash & Co., of the Eliza ledge, Humbug Hill, near Yreka. have just cleaned up a run of 33 tons rock, realizing 33 ounces ef gold. This was from the lower level, where the lead is six feet thick, and the rock taken ont asthe men worked upward, making a chimney to get air, A Ries Mine.—Appeal, 25d: R. L. Crary brought down yesterday, for assay, $41,000, the proceeds of the last run of the Smartsville Hydranlic Mining Co. This is the second dividend of this mine, the first being over $30,000. Arizona. Wickensure.—Prescott Miner, Dec. 7th: Joseph Kelley informs us that the Vulture Mining Co’s 40-stamp quartz mill was making money..It was rnmored that Hinton & Smith had sold their mill aud claim to a San Francisco company, who intended to bnildlarger... R. W. Groom and Geo. Monroe were running an arastra on the White Pichaco mine, Watnur Goove.—Parties who arrived from the Grove on Wednesday, report everything lovely, C. B. Gennng had cleaned up one arastra, and got a good return from Sutler ore. He was preparing to clean up another, in which he had} He had also started ground Blue Jay ore. The work on the Montgomery mine. placer miners were making fair wages. 1,200 cords of wood on hand, and provisBia Buc,—Messrs, Gray, Wunderlich and Hitehcock, arrived Tuesday, from Big Bug, to attend the funeral of their friend, Wm. Jackson bought the interests owned by his brothers Sol. and Cal. in these diggings, on Lower Lynx Creek, so that the ‘old man” now owns one-half the property. The other half is owned by Messrs. Lovejoy, Griffin, and the heirs of Mr. Shirley. Work has commenced in the mining claims belonging to Messrs. Bean, Bowers and Wells, at the head of Lynx Creek. Colorado. Buack Hawk.—Central City Herald, Dee. 15th: Logan Findley & Co. are still working the old Holdbrook mill to its full capacity. Holmes & Daws are running the 20 stamps of the Hurd mill on U. P. R. quartz. Mr. Lindsey has leased the old Holman mill and is running it on Bates & Hunter ore. Fitzpatrick and the . Black Hawk Co’s mill are supplied with all the ore they can crush. Kimber isrunning 25 stamps on California ore. M. B. Hayes has completed his additions to the New York mill, and is running 40 stamps on custom ore, The new engine works to acharm. The Consoildated Gregory and Woodbury & Norton’s mills are crushing steadily. Ireus.—Georgetown Miner, 16th: A new shaft is being sunk on the Caledonia lode.. Work ou the North America has been resumed..The Baker Co. shipped this week, 91 lbs. troy of silver bullion 940 fine; coin value $1,550..OQue ton of firstclass Sterling ore was shipped to Newark, N. J., for treatment last week..Ten tons of first-class Snow Drift ore was shipped last week to Newark, N. J..Charles Bellamy informs us that two feet and a half of solid mineral has been struck in the Mendota lode, Sherman Mountain..The Sterling mine changed ownership, at good fignres, a short time since..On Tuesday the Franklin Co. brought to Georgetown for melting, 235 lbs. troy of silver bullion. The assay and melting furnaces at the Co’s mill will be finished in a few days... The Baker Co. are sending 3 tons of ore to mill daily. They have let a contract to sink a 100-foot shaft. Svanir Irems.—Work on the Napoleou load is revealing an unusual deposit of ore in the crevice. Milner & Black are working with good results on an extension of the Cooper lode, Collier Mouutain. They have unearthed a solid vein of mineral of great width. The reduction works of the Sukey Co. ou Snake river are completed. Idaho. Boise Mines. — Statesman, 16th: Ad. Quively, just returned from the mines 40 miles up the river, says work has ceased for the season on account of the freezing weather, A dozen men will winter there, sawing out lumber and making pveparations for spring. Wutow Creek Mrivyes.—Same of 18th: The new diggings are attractiug some attention. Two or three hundred Chinamen are at work, and will commence mining next week, Almost all the creeks and gulches running into the valley prospect well. Loon Creex.— World, 16th: Judge Shepherd’s agent at Oro Grande writes: There was quite an excitement here last week abont a prospect found on the Middle Fork of Loon creek, in Smith’s district, three miles from Oro Grande, 25 cents to the pan and only two feet deep, with plenty of water. About 75 claims were recorded, and the prospects look fayorahle for good digzings. Mining has ceased for the winter—Loon ereek being frozen over in several places. A prospect has also been found in the lower discoveries. Our camp promises better than ever for another season, Montana. Suanor Irems.—Virginia Times, Dee, 20th. John How has workmen sinking on the Nelson, Keystone, Polar Star, and other leads at Summit. A run has heen made on rock from the latter lead, with satisfactory results. Mr. How has erected a 20-stamp mill. Covelly & Co., owners in the Keystone, expect to have some ore erushed in the How mill, soou, for the purpose of testing it.. .The miners on Eagle Hill bar are tunneling, taking out pay dirt to wash in the spring. Ivems.—Gazette, 14th: ‘The Hendrie mill is running five stamps on ore from the Vawter lode, as a test. ‘The other 15 stamps are on Union ore..On Saturday the Whitlach Park company cleaned up from one run, in Addis’ ten-stamp mill, on Park ore, a neat brick valued at $4,700. Yesterday we saw another brick just out of ; the mould, weighing 637 ounces and worth over $13,000. This was from the Whitlach mine, and Hendrie’s new mill. J. C. Ricker had a brick rn weighing 327 ounces and worth over $6,000. Tae Cepar Creek Russ.—Same"of 22d: A private letter from Missoula says: Every body is cxeited with the uews from the new diggings. The mines prospect from 25 centsup. I saw one piece that weighed $16. The creek is as long as Alder, and has many trihutaries. Two or three of them are rich. The main gulch is called Cedar; the side gulches, Montreal, Rabbit, ete. Louisville is located, and another . town will he laid out just below in a few days. The boys from Beartown hegan ‘coming in to-day. Another Ictter says: ‘‘The creek is 25 miles long, and they have found good prospectsin every place thus far. I only saw two pans of dirt washed-—87 cents to the two pans. Tipton got nine dollars and seventy-five cents to five pans; Jim Lawer, two dollars and seventy-eight cents to one aie and the discoverers panned out over 0. Nevada. COPE DISTRICT. ARGENTA.—Elko Independent, Dec. 25th: The vein at a depth of 77 feet is 18 feet in width, and carries the richest ore, Five tons came down on Thursday, and left for San Francisco yesterday. Reinhart & Co. received, yesterday, a consignment of hullion from Cope, ‘This is the sccond shipment from the Atchison & Drew mill. ; Moonrain Crry.—This mine, lately purchased by Meader & Co., is being worked vigorously, and the ore said to surpass in richness any hefore found. HURIBOLDT. Yosrmire Mixe.—Register, 25th; The owners are making arrangements to develop their property. The Supt. has arrived from California, and commenced operations with six menu. ‘The vein as far as developed averages two feet and the ore is of the richest qnality—a lot shipped to San Francisco yieldiug $660 per ton. Barre Movntain.—In the Buena Vista ledge, a tunnel of 275 feet cut the ledge at right angles at adepth of 120 feet. At the point of intersection the ledge is 10 feet wide and coutains seven feet solid chloride and sulphuret ore, which assays from $40 to $250 per ton. The owners are haying a shaft raised from the tunnel to the surface for veutilating purposes, and extensive ore houses built. The owners of the Caledonian ledge have sold two-thirds interest to an English Co. for $20,000, The new owuers are prosecuting work vigorously. Excirement.—The people of Gold Run have been excited. Au Indian hrought into camp a piece of ore of exceeding richness which he claimed to have found in the mountain south, There was a general rush in the direction indicated. Meantime two or three individuals corralled the Indian and sueceeded in spiriting him away on fleet charger. REESE RIVER. 7 Prosrrets or Avustin.—eveille, Dec. 93d: The ore in Lander Hill is rich. Last year the silver produced by the ‘Manhattan mill amounted to about $1,200,000. Yesterday we heard of three miners who received $10,000 as their share of the profits of ore obtained from a mine in that hill by about one month’s work. But these are not the cases upon which we hase the future prosperity of Austin. Her resources are broader. Bouuiion.—For the six days ending this date there were produced at the Manhattan mill 17,733 ounces of bullion. YangEr Buaps.—We hear several mines highly spoken of. Among them are the Tuolumne, the Chase, the Maggie, and the Yankee Blade mine of the American Co. WHITE PINE. Weerxzy Muinine Review.—Empire, 25th: Asarulc, mining matters have flourished for the past week. The men who were knocked off have found employment or gone to work ou their own account, and there are not more idle men than formerly. The true solution of the question of the suspension of work by two or three of the leading mines on Treasure Hill will he found in the oversupply of ore on the dumps of the various mills. The News says: ‘‘ The new developments in the Earl, and the extraordinary showing of bullion value in the South Aurora, are enconraging. We hear of a break-off on one link of the chain of circumstances connected with the late stoppage. The corporations have come toadead lock on a consolidation project, and the mining interest ia likely to be gainer by it.
