PATENT CHAIR SPRING.
PURINGTON & MAYOUX’S PATENT, NOY. 30, 1869.
This is the best Chair Spring yet invented, and will undoubtedly supersede all other devices of
tbe kind, as itis SIMPLER, CHEAPER, AND MORE DURABLE. As a simple article of comfort and ease, it has no superior, and only needs to he tried to commend itself to universal and lasting favor. The Springs seen attached to the front legs of the chair in the engraving enables the
person sitting in the seat, with very little effort, to give themselves
A Gentle and Easy Rocking Motion,
And also to rest themselves by change of position, by a very slight movement. It renders a common
chair, at a trifling expense, equal or superior, in many respects, to a rocking chair. ;
The advantage of this Spring over all others consists in the manner of attaching it to the
chair by the simple turning of a nut, which nut is also securely, easily and quickly adjusted to the
Spring in a manner impossible for it to hecome inadvertently detached. The engravings sbow tbe
parts both detached and as adjusted to the chair.
The nut is made of metal, and is provided with a screw thread, so that it can be serewed to the
leg of an ordinary chair; and instead of weakening and splitting the leg, as in the case where a hole
is bored and a screw inserted to hold and attach the nut, this method strengthens it

The ease and convenience in applyiog the spring to the nutis readily scen.

The top of the

the smaller end of the pan can he screwed to the nut; and its top coil being brought firmly against
the shoulder, all oscillation from side to side is prevented.

The Ramie Plant.
This valuahle fibre plant, peculiarly favorable for cultivation on the Pacific Coast, is not a new discovery, but
the recently-invented methods of manufacturing its
fibres into a large variety of heautiful and durable
goods OHEAPLY, is what has recently given it great popularity and significanco. [Ilustrated in the Scientijic
Press, January 1, 1870,]Advantages of Cultivating Ramie.
The plant has no enemies; mildew is said not to
afiect it. The crop pays manifold better than cotton or
any other farming production now cultivated. It is a
superior fibre in every respect, It works equally well
with silk and with worsted chain. It takes fast colors,
and it always hasa silky lustre; it surpasses all other
fihres in wear,
Whoever goes into the cultivation of Ramie now, will
find great extra profit in the sale of roots and cuttings
in the next rain season. There is an assured market for
Ramie, Weare authorized hy wealthy English dealers
in fibres to buy all the Ramie fibre that can he procured
in California for years to come.
Roots of the Ramie for salo at $25 per hundred; 20
per cent. off to the trade, Address,
