Jaxcary 1, 1870. . SCIENTIFIC PRESS: fend. os Nova Scotia anp Ouro GRrinDsToNES.— Tho ‘‘Acadians ” take advantage of the extraordinary high tides of the Bay of Fnndy, to work its quarries. At low water a huge mass of stone is loosened from its bed anc a heavy chain is passed un-lerit and over n large boat, which is placed alongside. As the tide rises, the stone, attached to the bottom of the bont, is floated into a sand cove at high water, and made into grindstones after the tide recedes. This is doue with mallet and chisel, the rongh parts being first chopped off with a henvy ax. Machinery has been recently introduced, and the small griudstones are now torncd in a lathe by steam power. Nearly all the Ohio grindstones are made by machinery driven by steam power. The blocks of stoncs heing loosened from the quarry bed are roughly hewn out, with a square holo in the center. This is placed on a heavy square iron shaft frnished with a 9-inch collar, against which tho stone is securely fastened by means of another collar keyed agninst the side of the stone. Tho shaft end stono being driven by stenm power, two men on opposite sides of the stone turn it off perfectly true, by means of soft iron bars abont G feet loug, and 2 by 14inch thick, drawn ont to a thin point, which is cnrved upwards.—Cor.
