Take oecasion to call your attention to tlie following rules, regulations and suggestions relative to the obtaining of LetTERS Patent of tle United States: Established in 1860. Our business has beea long aad snecessfully practiced, nud we ure thoroughly responsible for the confidence and valuable trusts plneed in onr churge. Our advico caa always bo relied upon ns correct. Tho principal portion of the patent busiacss of this const has beea done, aad is still being donc, through our ageacy. We ure familiar with aad havo full records of all former cases, and ean more correctly judgo of the valuo and patemiability of inventions discovered here, than any other ageats. Steps Necessary to Procure a Patent. Tho First thiag reqaired is a model, if your in. veation can bo represcured by one. It is not oaly immediately necessary in preparing the papers, hut the law demaads that the inveator shall, in all eases, furnish a model, which must not excced twelve inches ia aay of its dimcasioas. A model of less size will answer when morc coavenient. It should he neatly made, of hard wood or ictal, or both, nad varnished or paiatcd; tho name of the inventor and tho name of the articlo should be engraveil or painted on it in a permancnt manner. When the iavention consists of an improvement on some known machine, a full working model of the whole will not be necessary. It shonld ho snfficiently perfect, bowever, to show, with clearness, the nature and operation of the invention, aad the relation of the new to the old parts of the machine. ‘ As soon as the model is ready, it shon!d be carefully hoxed and shipped by express, or otherwise, to our address, namely: DEWEY & CO., Mining and Scientific Press, San Francisco. Prepay expenses and sead express reccipt to us hy mail. A full description must also be sent with the model, emhodying all the ideas and claims of the inv@ntor respecting the improvement, descrihing . the varions parts and their operation. Simultaneously with the modol, the inventor should send us the first instalment of the Government fee, fifteen dollars. The money may he forwarded oither by express with the model, or by registered letter, post office order, or by draft on San Franciseo, payahle to our order. Always send a letter with the model, and with the remittance, stating the name and address of the scnder. On reeelpt of the model and Government first fee of $15 in eurrency, the case is duly registered on our hooks, and the application proceeded with as fast as possible. When the docnments are ready we send them to the inventor hy mail, for his examination, signature and acknowledgement before a Notary Public or Justice of the Peace, with a letter of instruction, etc. Our fee for preparing the case is then due aad will be called for. The case will then be presented to the Patent Office, and as soon as the patent is ordered to be issued the Government last feo of $20 in currency will be required. The law statcs that every patent shall he dated as of a day not later than six months after the time at which it was passed and allowed, and notice thereof sent to tho applicant or his agent. And if tho final fee for such patent he not paid within the said six months, the patent shall be withheld, and at the expiration of two years the invention therein descrihed shall hecome public property as against the applicant therefor. When the invention consists of a new article of manufacture, a medicine, or a new composition, samples of the separate ingredients, sufficient to make the experiment, (nnless they are of a common and well known character), and also of the manufactured article itself must be furnished, with full description of the entire preparation. For Processes, frequently no model or drawings are necessary. In such case the applicant has only to send us an exact description, and what it is desirahle to claim. For Designs no models are necessary. Dnplicate drawings are required, and the specifications and other papers should he made up with care and necuracy. some instances two photographs, with the negatives, answer well instead of drawings. Inventors who do business with us will he notified of the state of their application in the Patent Office, when it is possible for us todo so We do not require the personal nttendance of the inventor, unless the invention is one of great complication, usually the business ean be well done by correspondence. The usnal time required to secnre a patent, when thecase is conducted at our agency, is from one to two months. We sometimes get them throngh in two weeks. In rare cases, however, owing to delay on the part of Government officials, the period is sometimes extended for months. We make a special point to advance onr cases as rapidly as possible, and have been snccessful in obtaining patents for this coast more surely and speedily than any other agency in the United States. Letters Patent and Who Can Obtain them. A patent is an open letter, emhodying all the language of an inventor or his agent, contained in BERL “ANT Mechanteal Movements from Dewey & Co’s Pamphlet Cireular. PLATE §, PLATE V. The explanations of the above and many other illustrations is contained in our Free Circular, which will be sent free on receipt of postage stamp. the specificatioa, without alteration, and is graated~ to citizeas of the United States, or Foreigaers, malo or females, {including minors), aad is signed by the Secretary of the Interior and the Commissioner of Patents, with the seal of the Patent Office affixed. Its jurisdiction is for the whole United States, for the term of seventeen years. Citizens of Canada and Nova Scotia have to pay a fee of $500 for patents in the U. S., owing to discriminations made against Americans. What Claims can be Patented? A knowledge of Ancient and Modern Mechanics and familiarity with American and Foreign patent issues and rejections, enables ns to determine in a measure in all cases what ean be patented, and how maoch can he claimed as new and novel, and he covered hy Letters Patent. This is one of the most difficult questions encountered hy both old and new inyentors—one in which an experienced counsel is of great service. A majority’ of the Patents issued during the pest eight years to Pacific Coast inventors have een secured through our Agency; consequently we can more readily and correctly advise new applicants than any other agent. Important Advantages. Somo of the advantages to be obtained by patronizing ns may be enumerated as follows: Inventors on this coast having their applications for patents made out through our agency, can sign their papers at once, and thus secure their rights much sooner than by trusting the same to distant agencies, situated at New York or Washington. Many inventions on this coast are for ohjects and purposes bnt little understood hy partics at Washington or other parts of the ast. Our mining machinery, processes and operations are hest understood by those familiar with their use. A personal verbal explanation is oftentimes of important service, and enables us to be more suceessful than agents generally. Remittances of money made by individunl inventors to the Government sometimes miscarry, and it has frequently happened that applicants have not only lost their money, but their inventions also, from this cause and consequent delay. We hold ourselves responsible for all fees entrusted to our agency. By an able and faithful representative of our firm in Washington, our clients’ applications are guarded against indifferent examination, unfair 4 ess in any contingency, and hazardous deays. Patents for inventors on this coast are actually secured cheaper through our agency than any other, however flattering may be the inducements offered at the commencement by others. Extensive practice gives us great facilities, socuring regularity in the transaction of our business, which extends to EVERY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD where patent laws exist. Wo assist in bringing valuable inventions to the general notice of the public throughout the Pacific Coast by illustration or description inthe columns of the Mining ann Screntiric Press. Confidential Advice. Those who have made inventions and desire to consult with us respecting the same, are cordially
invited to do so. Wo shall be happy to see them in person at our office, or to advise them by mail. In all cases they may expect from us an honest opinion. For these consultations, opinion and advice we make no charge. A pen-and-ink sketch and description of the invention should be sent together with a stamp for retura postage. Write plain, do not use peacil or pale iak ; be hrief. Remember all business eommitted to our care, and all consultations, are kept hy us secret aad strictly confidential. Our permanent business interests demand, as it were, a sacred compliance with our obligations as solicitors, and iu reference to our strict fidelity in this respect we refcr to one and all of the thousands of inventors and patentees on this coast who have patronized us. Expense of Applying for Patent. The Governmeat fee, on filing an application for a patent in the United States, is fiftecn dollars ; and if the patent is allowed, twenty dollars additional is required. If rejected. the first fee of fifteen dollars is all that is demanded. To the foregoing official fees must he added fees for preparing tbe various documents and exe pense of drawings. Our charge for preparing the doeuments for a case, presenting it to the Govern-ment, and attending to all business connected with it, is $25 and upward. For cases demanding extra work and attention, only a reasonable fee in accordance with the serviees required, to do full justice to the case, will be charged. Followiag is the list of Government fees, payable in currency : OG GY Cry CAMGNC. 0.20. ccce eee tere tens te eee ee On every application for a patent, for seventeen years.. 1 On every application for a design, for 3 y’rs and 6 mos.. In cases of immediate importance we can have their progress reported by telegraph, so that applicants know immediately the result of the examination and decision of the Patent Office. We also make examinations by telegraph regarding the patentability of inventions; oxamine patent assignments on record at Washington; obtain copies of patents or claims, nnd also derive other information desired instantly from the Patent ffice. Reasons for Success. We would especially call the attention of the inyentive publie to the fact that our Patent Agency is taking outa larger number of Pateats than any other agency west of the Mississippi River. We do our work promptly and thoroughly, and refer to our standing amongst inventors as an evidence of our suecess in our special department. Our work is all done inside of our office, nY COMPETENT AND RELIABLE PERSONS, who have been for years interested and associated with us. Wo therefore are not compelled (like many ageneics) to trust valuable and important inventions promiscuously to outsiders, to have part of the case prepared, but inventors ean depend tbat, from the time their eases are first placed in our office, they are kept with proper secrecy until full rights aro secured in the Patent Office in Washington. This is an important point in the proper proseeution of Patent business, It is a notorious fact that somo prominent agencies trust a considerable portion of their cases to apprentices and amateurs. A deficiency or want of attention to tbe small affairs of any kind of business will often prove as harmful as a fiagrant violation of the most important rules which govern and control it, To Eastern Inventors. Our close proximity to British Columbia, Mexico, Ceniral and South American States, Australiu nnd the Islaads, enables us to obtain Letters Patent for you with mach less delay and expense than they ean he secured through any other agency in the United States. Melbonrne, in Anstralia, is a city of larger proportions that San Francisco, besides the adjacent colonies are of great commercial and miucral importance, Inventions of all kinds, but especinlly ihose relating to the saving of gold and silver, if secured in Australia, will oftca prove of great value. We have competent agcats there, aad can promiso that ihe business will bo atteaded to with fidelity and dispatch, Self-Evident Facts. Hayiag had large experience, aad gratifying suceess with the great varicty of cascs emanating on this coast, we feel confident of onr abilities to assist iayentors in patentiag their invontions, saving them from vexatious delays, and from receiving worthless papers hy reason of imperfect preparation of their claims before being sent to the Patent Ottico. In early days but littlo preparation was necded, or but ordinary skill required to obtain a patent ; but now, by rcasoa cf the multiplicity of inventioas, and the numerous Acts of Congress, fonad neeessury to protect the inventor whilo the patent lasts, und to do justice to the people after it expires, the utmost care and skill are requisite in miaaaging cases and ohtainiag a patent that will be of real value to the Patentec, aad stand tho test of passing through the legal ordeal of nn infriagement suit. The general practice of the Patent Office regarding the examination or issue of Letters Patent for inventions has aot been materially changed for many jears, yet there have been amendments added to the laws of 1861, 1863, and 1866, and which it is aecessary for all parties managing an applica. tion to be conversant with. Old inveators invyariably advise the cmploymeat of none but agents of responsibility and experience. As agents with such qualifications, we solicit honest patronage. Interferences. INTEERFERING APPLCATIONS are coadnected with spirit aad ability on the most fuvorable terms, hy DEWEY & CO. It sometimes happens that an applicant finds his invention has been patented by anotbor, but more recent discoverer. In such cases the prior discoverer can obtain full right to the invention if he can produce tangible evidence of priority. When patentees are threatened with interference they should consult able and responsible agents hefore they either allow themselves to bo hacked down from their rights, or trespass upon the rights of othors. We will always counsel and advise in such cases upon the most reasonahle terms—often saving clients heavy damsges and exorhitant fees. Advancing Cases. If any case placed in our hands meets with re jection, we do not wait to write and iaform the in ventor of this fact, (as is tbo case with most agents,) but our representative at Washington proceeds at once to examine the steted objectioas, and ifitbe not a jnst and unavoidable decision, the claims of the inventor will be presistently argued hefore the Examiner, and if possiblo the decision reversed. Inventors on the Pacific Coast, locatcd at great distance from the Patent Office, of nil others, should be careful to avoid inexperiencod, dishonest, or otherwise unreliable and irresponsible agents. Inventors haviag models in our possession must send written orders when they desire any particular friend to see them.
