Locan Recorp.—Silver City Avalanche,
March 9: Under the guidanco of J. Jewell,
foreman of the Mahogany, we went through
the varions levels, drifts and stopes of that
mine on Wednesday. The main shaft is
down 437 ft. from the surface. Four ft,
from tho hottom of the shaft a tank has
been put in to receive the water from the
5th level after tho vein shall have been
tapped. Tho cross-cut from the hottom
of the shaft is in ahout 8 ft., and Mr,
Jewell expects to rnn from 8 to 10 ft. further heforo striking tho ledge. Tho shaft
will shortly be put down to the 6th level.
The 4th level is at a depth of 328 ft. The
length of the cross-cut from tho shaft to
the ledge at this point was 12 ft. Drifts
have been rnn hoth north and south on
the vein in the 4th level. The South drift
has been extended 95 ft., and stopes taken
off from cross-cut for 61 ft, in length with
an average hight of 25 ft. The north drift
is in 79 ft. with the hacks taken away for
G5 ft, in length, and at an average hight of
35 ft. There is yet 35 ft. more ‘to mn before reaching the Sonth Chariot line; so
that there is 2 fine vein of stopes, 126° ft.
in length and still getting longer by extending south. Throughout the 4th level
the ore is better than was ever hefore
found in the mine, The pay streak is
about a footin width, and will pay over
$100 per ton. Free gold and pure silver
in abundance can he seen in almost any of
the quartz, and also in the granite
casings. They have shipped ahont 250
tons of ore to the mill and have 50 tons on
hand in the ore house. Forty-three men,
all told, are employed in themine at present, and they are takiug out from 12 to 15
tons of ore every 24 hours.
The South Chariot 4th level drift is in
228 ft., showing a 15-inch ledge, and looking hetter than over before since it was
started.
The 2d lovel drift of the Minnesota is in
140 ft. north from the shaft and 130 south.
The ledge is from 6 to 15 inches in width,
of ore that will pay ahont $60 per ton.

the fou in silver, and 45 per cent. lead.
The work is down 16 ft.; it shows an average of 4 ft. in width. The Goleonda is
down 40 ft.—300 tons taken out. The
lead opens 60 ft. wide. The ore is half
carhonate and half galena. The Yreka is
down 20 ft.; shows a large lead but the
width is not known. Some of the ore has
been sent toS. F., and works $100 to the
ton; 50 to 100 tons havo heen taken ont.
The Independent is down 18 ft.; shows 15
ft. wide; 200 tons of ore have been takon
ont, and the ore is the same character and
valuo as the Yroka, only a little more galena. The Mammoth shows on the snrfave 40 ft. wide. Only 3 days work havo
been done on this lead. The oro assays
$308 to the tou, he Original shows 125
ft. wide on the surfaco. "They havo run
a cut 40 ft. across, and 25 ft. deep im the
deepest placo. Tho averago assay is $42
in silver and 27 por cent. lead. ‘The Miami is down 45 ft.; shows 6 ft. wido; assays
$120 to tho ton, Tho Monitor is down 25
ft., or ruther they have run a tunnel] on
the lead 60 ft., and are in 25 ft. bolow tho

W. J. Hanks,fforeman of tho Empire,
has that mine in splendid shape for working. Stopes are being driven north the entiro depth of the shaft, which is down 90
ft. from the surface. The ledgo averages
a foot or more in width as far as it has yet
heen worked, and the ore pays about $150
per ton. A new ledge, 1% ft. in width, has
just come into the hottom of theshaft from
the west.
The Morning Star shaft will be down
220 ft. next week, from the hottom of

CoNSIONMENT oF CaALrrorNIAN PEARS.—
We have often had to direct attention
to the magnitnde of the fruit trade of this
city and the enormous distances from
which in many cases the Glasgow market
is supplied. A hetter illustration of this
could not possibly he adduced than the
fact that on Saturday Mr. Thomas Davis,
of the Bazaar, received a consignment of
pears grown in Sacramento, California.
The pears are of the Easter Beurre kind,
and arrived in very good condition. The
Easter Beurre is a magnificent species of
pear, being twice or three times the size
of our Jargonelle, of excellent flavor, and
so well adapted for keeping that, notwithstanding the lateness of the season and the
distance over which it has travelled, the
fruit looks asfresh as if it had just heen
