219 SCIENTIFIC! PRESS) [April 6, 1872. ‘ Manine Summary. _THE following is mostly condensed from journals published in the interior,in proximity to the mines mentioned. California. ALPINE COUNTY. TarsuisH.—Monitor Miner, March 23: At 12 o’elock yesterday the mill started up. Tur finest body of ore opened in Alpine was struck in the Silver Glance this week. It is a continuation of the vein heing worked in the Monitor No. 3 and heing 300 ft. deepsr, shows that vein to hs not only continuous, hut richer as depth is reached. We anticipate a lively season. The Tarshish, M. & N. W., Leviathan and Glohe, which have ore in sight; , work from 25to 75 meneach. The Sovereign, Mountain, American, Morning Star, Winchester, Marion aud others are already talked of as sure to start up. We expect to see 500 men at work in this vicinity hefore Sept. next. AMADOR COUNTY. Onurpa.—Jackson Ledger, March 23: The mill has stopped for waut of fuel, yet the hoisting works are operating and a large amount of rich rock lies in the mill ready forcrushing. Supt. Morgan is engaged in erecting a building and hoisting works on the North shaft. Goop Curran Up.—The tuunel or hill claim of Seior Domingo Araus, at Jackson Gate, 3 miles north of town, after a run of 15 days, cleaned up alittle over $1,000. This mine is worked by 3 men who draw out the dirt and pileit up until they acenmulate sufficient to make a 15-day’s run, when they wash it by the hydraulic process. Puymovra.—Cor. same: The Phenix is turning out good rock. The Co. expect to huilda 20-stamp mill near the mine soon, to be driven by water power. The Alpine is progressing downwards, and their mill is not running, but will prohably start up soon, The Condo is turning out rich rock. As soou as the road settles they will haul 150 tons to the mill. The Philadelphia is running a low grade ore with a large amount in sight. The Arastra claim still runs, making small wages on $2 rock. Ping Grove.—Cor. Jackson Dispatch, March 30: In the Barlow quartz mine the shaft is about 240 ft. deep, from which 14 men are running 2 tunnels—each of which is abont 100 ft. long. There are 16 men ahove ground employed in. connection with the steam hoisting works, chopping timher, ete. The owners design to sink the Barlow shaft 100 ft. deeper, drive the tunneis, thoroughly prospect both veins, and then determine on the propriety of building a mill. CALAVERAS COUNTY. Maoutnery.—-Calaveras Chronicle, March 80. The props. of the Prussian Hill mine, have purchased the French mill, at Rich Gulch Flat, and will move it to their works as soon as the roads, will permit. ‘The -machinery consists of a 13-stamp hattery and a 30-horse power engiue, in gocd condition. RaipRoaAD.—In the Petticoat on reaching the depth of 350 ft. a level has been run ahout 200 -feet on the lead, disclosing a wide vein of gold-hearing quartz. Work is progressing favorably on the Wolverine, in Wet Gulch. The shaft has reached a depth of about 200 ft., and a level is being run from the bottom, The Free and Easy has heen purchased hy Mr. Porteous, who is working it to good advautage. Clark’s mill, leased by Sanderson & Pickering, is crushing rock from the Good Hope at Mosquito Guleh. There are 100 tons altogether which will pay at least $25 per ton. Jznny Linp.—Cor. same: The hydraulic claims on Whisky Hill are rushing things through. The Bunker Hill Co. have suspended operations for the present so as to re-lay their flume. INYO COUNTY, Wairrentinp Ore.—Inyo Independent, March 22: The assay value of the first-class ore heing extracted from the Whittekind mine, Cerro Gordo, is 40644 ozs. per ton; the second class reaching 180 ozs. The ledge has just heen tapped in the new tunnel. Suipment.—Los Angeles News, March 20: 1,330 bars of Cerro Gordo bullion were shipped from here toS. F. by the steamer California, Los AncEuEs, March 26—By telegraph. 570 bars, base bullion, were received from Cerro Gordo to-day. NAPA COUNTY. GuyseR QuickSInvER Mines.—Calistoga Tribune, March 28: The Original Geyser Quicksilver Mine was located on the 13th of Nov. 1871. The mine is about 2 miles west of the Geyser Springs, near the Hog’s Back ridge. The first rock taken out assayed 13), per cent. Better rock has since heen struck, which, it is thought, will assay 25 or 30 per cent. A large quantity of good rock is in sight, and the Co. are ahout to commence tunneling. Locations have been made on the same ledge. NEVADA COUNTY. Goop Surpumnt.—Grass Valley Union, March 27: Findley & Co. yesterday shipped to S. F., $20,500, the product of a short run of the Idaho and several] other mines. Tue Srrvarion.—Idaho is paying regularly. There is no deterioration in the ore, and no falling off in the strength of the ledge. Many improvements are in progress at mine and mill. The new shaft is tohe 6 hy 20 ft. in the clear, and will he arranged for convenient and economical working. North Star will startup to-morrow, and ina few days a full complement of hands will he employed in the mine. There ison the dnmp shout 300 tons of good rock waiting for the mill. Empinr mine is running full-handed. Great quantities of rock are being taken out—so fast that their 20-stamp mill has to run night and day for the 7 days in the week, to keep up with the mine. Eureka mine makes no particular improvement. The men in the cross-cut from the 5th level are doing well in very hard rock with giant powder. Hevston Hill for the last 6 or 8 months has been worked by contractors, who for the first 4 or 5 months made about $10 per day tothe man, This rock did not hold out and as a consequeuce the mine is ahout to he abandoned. Shamrock is being worked again, and steam machinery for hoisting and pnmping has been placed on the mine. Knight of Malta is getting up an engine for hoisting and pumping, and in a few days regnlar work will commence. Independence Con. on French Ravine, is worked by a tunnel giving 150 ft. backs. ‘The tunnel is in 1390 ft. and 420 ft. mors will ent the first large ledge. Constitution mine, adjoining the above, will soon continne their tunnel. Washington, a new location, west and adjoining the Independence Co. has taksn ont good quartz lately. Perrin Mine is taking out rock and running drifts. Gen. Grant Mine, sonth of the Psrvin, is taking ont fine looking rock, which is acenmulating on tbe dump. Branch Mint Mine, on the ridge, betwesn Deer and Wolf creeks, has a long tunnel which drains the ledge to a great depth, giving about 200 ft. of backs. Witntow Vanutey.—The last ernshiug from the Lecompton ledge, paid $60 por ton, and some previous crushings have yielded as high as $120. The mine is now idle for want of capital to erect machinery. Tax ledge owned by Brown & Gagan, is ahout 1% ft. thick, and is rich in sulphur ets. This mine was opened this season, the first ernshing paying $18 per tou. In the Buchanan, the last lot of rock erushed at the Oriental mill yielded $40 perton. Tho Co. have outa large quantity of rock, which shows free gold and is rich iu sulphurets. Hucxer & Co., have a splendid ledge, which is 1% ft. thick. The crushings havo yielded as high as $25 per ton, and none less than $18. Buexsye Co. has a splendid 3-ft. ledge, and aro pushing ahead with energy. They aro taking out large quantities of rock, paying them from $22 to $25 per ton. Munroe & Co.’s ledge excels any in richness in this township. The ledge is large, andis paying ahout $60 per ton. They have hoisting works, and an 8-stamp mill which is operating day and night. Murchie & Co, have been engaged for a long time running a tunnel to worka gravel range which they own, and while doing so, ran against the hest quartz ledgo ever discovered in that section of country. The ledge is over a ft. thick, and will pay not less than $80 per ton. They picked out of the gravel claim some of the quartz, which was crushed and paid over $200 per ton. : Tuere are alarge numher of Cos, eugaged in prospecting, and every few days new discoveries are heing made. Locatep. — Grass Valley Republican, March 28: A. J. Doolittle and W. H. Raymond have located a water privilege of 2,000 inches of the surplus waters of Bear
river, taking it out at a point hetween the Little York and Gold Run ditches, to he used at Liberty Hill. H.H, Armstrong and others have located 1,000 ft. on the Reese & Dupew ledge, at Randolph Flat, commencing at the north houndary of Reese & Dupew’s claims and extending 1,000 ft. in a northerly direction, Alexander Haven and others have located 1,000 ft. ona ledge on Haven’s ranch, to he known as the Washington Lode, located in Grass Valley township. ; G. H. G. Stackhouse and othsrs have located 600 ft. on the Reese & Dupew ledge, commencing at the southern houndary of the south extension. i. PLACER COUNTY. Greens Mrxz.—Placer Herald, March 30: The Co. is sinking a fine shaft, which is to he sunk ahout 215 ft., hy men working on 8 hour shifts. The 20-inch lode is lookiug splendid and averages in gold $200 per ft. PLUMAS COUNTY. Struck Dicernes.—Plumas National, March 23: Some new surface diggings have heen discovered near the Indian Valley mine, near Greenville, which prospect well and will prohahly prove extensive. Ricu YretD.—Compton’s mill is paying splendidly, and the ledge looking hetter than ever. On Saturday last, after a 2 day’s run with 6 stamps, 52 ozs. was cleaned up from the apron and screens with fnllyas much more in the battery. SAN DIEGO COUNTY. Surrep.—San Diego Union, March 21: Bullion amounting to $2,280 was shipped to 8. I. on the Orizaha yesterday. Ivems.—At Julian general activity prevails. All of the mills are running, and nearly every ledge is being worked, some quite extensively. At Banner, Whitney & Co,s mill has temporarily stopped. Work will he commenced on a more extended scale in a short time. The Stonewall are puehing work with vigor. Since water was struck in the shaft, the mill has been rnnning steadily night aud day. A recent clean up of float and other rock made a good showing. The De Frees mill cleaned up 2 or 3 days since 48 tons of ore from the Mabel, which yielded $48 per ton. The Reynolds mill has crushed 20 tous of ore from the Big Blue lead, which gave $53 per ton. The prop. of the Owens lead are running a levelat the depth of 200 ft. The ore in sight will go ahout $19 per ton. There is sufficient ore to keep a hundred stamps husy, if the mine is properly worked. The Helvetia is being worked steadily at present. Its owners are taking cuta lot of ore which will ho crushed at the mill of De Frees & Co. The Excelsior lead has a day and night forco at work. . The Antelope mill is busy at work upou Madden rock, aud has several engagements to crush for other Companies. Wilson & Co, are crushing Helvetia rock. The working of the new mill gives goueral satisfaction. Work has been resumed on the Washington lead, which has recently heen leased. SIERRA COUNTY: Downieville Mt. Messenger, [March 23: Worxine SunpHoRsrs.—The Independence mine will erect works for the reduction of sulphurets this spring; also put in heavier machinery, and put their mine ona first class footing. Aut Our.—Manson has got the Highland & Masonie mine, at Alleghany, clear of water, and will push the work to hring to light the pay dirt. Discovertzs.—A numher of discoveries of rich quartz have heen made in this vicinity during the past winter, the most important of which, perhaps, is the High Commission ledge on the south Fork. The owners have gone in about 100 ft. and have aledge from 10 to 12 ft. wide, the rock throughout heing rich in free gold. The most important feature of this mine, isa helt of black sulphurets from 18 inches to 2 ft. wide, assaying from $5,000 to $6,000 perton. Similar sulphurets have been discovered on the East Fork and in Jim Crow Caiion. SOLANO COUNTY. Surpment.— Vallejo Chronicle, March 30: Eighteen flasks of quicksilver were brought in from the Vallejo mine to-day for shipment. TRINITY COUNTY. Rep Hinn.— Weavorville Journal, March 23: The miners of Red Hill and vicinity are working like hees, and will make 2 good season’s run. Lewiston.—Olney Philips is working 8 or 10 men in his claim, Trask & Ross ure helieved to have struck excellent pay. Goop Diacines.— Ward’s claim, on Oregon Gulch mountain, is the largest and 7 perhaps the fichestin Trinity Co. The face of the claim at present is 600 ft. in length and from 40 to 60 ftin depth. The gravel is intermixed with dscomposed quartz and voleanic ashes, which readily yield to-the action of the water without using either pick or hydraulic. Nevada. EUREKA DISTRICT. Buurton.—Eureka Sentinel, March 29: The Consolidatsd shipped 110 tons of hullion yesterday and day hefore. The Co. has produced so far in the preseut month, with hut 2 furnaces in operation, 290 tons. Proeressing.— Work on the Richmond furnaces is progressing rapidly. Tu Mines.—We yesterday visited soyeral very valuahle propsrties on Adams Hill. The first in order was the Newport, which helongs to the Magnolia Co. Ths main shaft is downahout 100 ft. disclosing a hody of ore 12 ft. in width. Three men are sinking preparatory to opening up leyels. An extra force will he put on the Astor incline to-day where large quantities of high grade ores are visihle. There are ah out 150 tons of ore on the varions dumps, Passing on to the Meredith, on whicha shaft is down 20 ft.; we saw a fair showing of ore at the hottom. Crossing over the ridge still further west hrought us to the Adams Hill property, which is heing vigorously worked. Three shifts of men are working night and day in the tunnel level. The most gratifying success attends all these various operatious, fine high “a ore being met with at all points. Serucz Mr.—The principal mines of the Ingot Co., are the Latham and the Fourth of July. ThelI. Co. ie erecting a large furnace, which will soon he ready for active operations. Thero are ahout 140 ~] in the Dist. ELY DISTRICT. Buuion.—Ely Record, March 21: W. F, & Co. hasshipped since the 14th inst. , hull. ion valned at $96,794.92. Kineston.—The mine ie on Panaca Flat. It has a shaft 165 ft. deep, and is being worked vigorously, the ledge showing ifself atthe depth of 150 ft., and is looking fiuely. Prooue (No. 9).—Tho shaft is in 460 ft. The first station is 75 ft. from the eurface. A drift has heen run 170 ft. showing a fins hody of are. At the-second station is another drift of 300 ft. with an immenss hody of ore. At the fourth station 360 ft. from the surface, is a drift of 294 ft. The ore in this drift is completely covered with horn silver, and averages by assay $1,000 to theton. Atthe bottom 460 ft. from ths surface, there is a drift or ‘‘ cross cut” hsing run to tap the ledge. It is only in ahout 12 ft. as yet. HUMBOLDT. Tue Frencu Canau.—Unionville Silver Stale, March 30: J. Ginacea has purchased a 10-stamp mill, all complete, which he intends putting up along sidethe old French — Caual, at Winnemucca. Sreminone Tunneuing Co.—The working force on theSeminole has heen inereased. The ledge continues to improve as depth is attaiued. The ledge is 4 ft. wide and the ore is of excellent quality. Ecurrse.—The owners this weok commenced stoping, and are now extracting rich ore in large quantities. The vein matter is from 5 to 6 ft. wide, one-half of which is miueral-bearing quartz. REESEI RIVER. Wrirntatoh Union. — Reese River Reveille, March 27: This mine is in splendid condition. A large ledge of high grads ore is heing worked on steadily. Yanxer Buapse.—The mines of this Dist. are yielding high grade ore, and preparations are heing made to work them mors extensively than heretofore. Mines lony abandoned are heing reopened, the ‘* Confidence” among others. WASHOE. Ors Yreup.—Virginia Enterprise, March 93: Last week the Crown Point yielded j 2,95] tons of ore, the Savage 1,173 tons, the Chollar 758 tons, and the Hale & Nor. cross 760 tons. p Pump ry Opzration.—The Justis Co. have got their pump in operation and are fast lowering the water in the mine, Surro Tunnev.—Tho tunnel was yesterday in 2,800 ft. Arizona anp Utan—The Co. sitnated upon the same lead as the Glohe Co., hslow Gold Hill, have cleaned out their old tunnel and retimhered it in good shape. . Tre Hale and Norcross Co. are eteadily drifting south on their lower level.
