Opinions of the Press.
Practicab Mining Lrrerature.—The want of sonnd
scientific knowledge has been much felt by the miners
employed in devsloping the vsst mineral resources of
the western regions of the United States, and for this
wsnt the work of Mr, J. 8. Phillips, M. E., of San Francisco, will provs an excellent remedy. The book is
written expressly for the miners in the districts mentioned. * * * Metallurgy, which is treated of in the
concluding section, is dealt with in the same practical
manner as the other subjects, the book altogether being
ons exactly calculated to suitthe views and meet the
requirements of those for whom it has bern written. It
is not intended as a scientific work, but to facilitate
prsctical operations upon acientific principles. This
object the book is well calculated to obtain, and its value
is much enhanced by the principle which Mr. Phillips
hss adopted of including only those processes which
can easily be carried out by practical men unused to
the delicate manipulations necessary in the laboratory
of the practis d chemist. The work will undoubtedly
obtain « large number of readers. ‘
Mr. J. 8. Plullips is well known to ths readcrs of
the Mining Journal] ss having also had considerable experience in mining in Cornwall.—[London Mining
Jourual.
Tse most practical and comprehensive work on mining anbjects extant.—[Scientilic Press.
A VALUABLE Wore.— * * Ws know of no work on
these subjects in the English language at oocs so comprehensive, practical and intelliglbls.—(S.F. Golden Era.
Brsrpes so many new facts and the large amount of
useful knowledge derived through these official sources
(Geological Surveys) , the mining public sre likely to find
in the recently published work of J. 8, Phillips, a valuabls teacher and assistant. This book, which treats in
an intelligent and practical way on almost every topic
connected with mining pursuits, should be in the hands
of every millman, metallurgist, prospector and miner
on the Pacilic Coast. Even the capitulist, and, in fact,
cvery person already engaged in, or likely to become interested in ths business of mining, will find in this
somprehensive work an amount of information that
they ‘canned afford to dispense with.—[S.F. Commercial
rald.
* * Besides that, there is much actual knowledge to
be gained froma perusal of this volume, and in this reapect alone it wili bs a vsluable assistant to those engsged actively in mining.[—8. F. Chronicle.
* * Itisaplain, but comprehensive digest of mining matters generslly. It affords a vast quantity of information ag to the appesrance and valus of different
ores.—[S. F, News Lettsr.
