February 10, 1872.] SCrENTIFIC PRESS: 89 tain Sheep, Champion and Lexington. Yourteen men are employed at the Antelope mine and mill, and in all, there are abont 30 miners iu the dist. Sienna Nevapa.—aA rich strike has been mado of wbat appears to he a back vein, which is mueb ricber and more premising than anytbing ever strnck in the mine. The new deposit is in the works advanced fartbest to the uorthwest and is separated from the white lead in front by a considerable thickness ofa sort of conglomerato of porphyry and a well-defined clay wall. The rock is much darker tban that in the frout veiu and presents much more the appearance of regular Comstock rock. While $5 per ton isas high as the frout yein has ever assayed in silver, this new deposit goes as high as $29. It appears, in addition, to bo very mneh richer in gold than tbe front vein, free gold heing visible to the naked eye in many speciinens. Upon the new deposit na winze has been sunk 30 ft., and from the bettom of this a cross-cut has been made whicb shows the body of ore to he 25 ft. in width. A sample of ore from the depesit, which we saw washed ont, showed a very large prospect of heautiful bright free gold, mucb of which was in coarse round pieces. Ata poiut about GO ft. eouth and some 40 ft. higber up, a second driit was yesterday just cutting into what seems to be the same «deposit. As yet only the oro tbat was dug from the winze and cross-cut has beeu extracted, as tho new strike is at u considerable distance, by way of a narrow and crooked drift, from the nearest ore chute. 3ELCHER,—The Belcher Co. have found a large and rich deposit of ore at the sonth end of their explorations, in a cross-ent west from their south drift. In tbe extreme sonth end of tbis drift tbe ore appeared for time to have almost givenout. Tbe drift seemed to be following tho direction of the vein, and wbat to make of tbe jumble of porpbyry and quartz into which it suddeuly ran no one knew. Shertly before a point or promontory of bard west county rock was passed, and tbis eeemed to have turned tbe vein to the eastward, therefore the drift was pushed in that direction until it ran into the poor rock mentioned above. Suspecting at length tbat after passing tbe promontory tbe vein might bave swung round it back to the westward, and tbat tbeir drift had been going diagonally across the vein, a eross-cnt was started west. The conjectnre proved correct, and last Saturday the cut began to enter ore, and has continued in good ore ever since, proving the presence of a large depesit at that distance south. Ore taken from the face of the cross-cut yesterday assayed $125 per ton. WHITE PINE. East Saenexecan—White Pine News, Jan. 27tb: There is a force of 10 men prospecting and putting tbe mine in sbape for spring operations. The sontheest drift from the original tunnel is in 18 ft. eince last report. There is a good hody of ore witb a fair ehowing of born silver. Excbange incline is down 10 ft. deeper than when last reported. Running on a epar seam, with a fair prospect for ore. The Regent drift running from the Regent shaft to cennect with the Exchange neline, has made 13 ft. headway eince last report. Tbree tons of ore are raised daily end piled on the dumps. San Juan pEn Rio.—The foreman reports the mine looking as usual. The ore pitches at an angle of 45degrees and assaye from $245 to $60 to tbe ton. ExsrHarpt.—In last week’e report mention was made of a sbaft going down on the end of the West drift for tbe purpose of testing the depth of ore. Sinee then work was suspended on eccount of enow blocking up the mouth of tho tunnel leadingtothedump. Work will be resumed as soon as it is possihle to remove the ore piled up in the drift. Nortu Avrora.—The ore-hody in the south drift from the Lady’s chamher is of the same grade as last reported. A force of men is engaged breasting out ore. Hoisting through the Engine shaft from the south and east drifts, Tbe Risdale cbamber shews 2 larger body of ore than at our last visit. Sourn Avrera.—Tbe Mitchell and Hanly shafts aro connectod with tho main lower tunnel. A distance of 25 ft. will connect tho Turner and Trewella shafts with the main tunnel. There is a force of men engagod in cross-cutting westfrom the Mitchell and Hanly shafts. The indicatione are favorable for mineral. . Corrrr Guance.—Two men are empleyed sinking anew shaft through the limestene cap. Inthe maiu 50-ft. sbaft there isa fine qnality of ore in sight. A force of men will soon he put on to start a drift from the hottom of the shaft, Onrorsat Hropen Treasure.—The bad couditien of the roads leading to the mine cut off the ore supply, and the Big Smoky mill bas shut down nntil the road improves so as to permit shipment of ore from the mino. PocoriLLo.—Since last report a contract was let to run 50 ft. sontb from the main tuunel. ‘The ore in the face of the drift is ef average milling quality, and bids fair to hold out. Gen Lee.—Tbe Supt. let a contract to ron a drift east from the ore cbamber (since our last mention of the mine) for a distance of 25 ft. The coutractors were to commence work to-day. NoonpDay.—Tho usual foree of men is employed breasting out. The ledge averages from 8 to 10 ft. in widtb. Piling ore on dumps. Arizona. Mixes anp Mryinxo.--Prescott Union, Jan. 25: The Tiger is yiciding ore more than half of which is silver. It is being sacked for shipment to S. I. This ore is from the 100 ft, level, wbere tbere is pleuty of tbe sameeort. The Benjamin, and adjecent imines, near Preecott, are yielding rich silver ore. The Josephine mine is small, hut very rich in free gold. In Wickenburg dist. the Vulture Co. are mining and milling, and Bill Smith is preparing to etart bis 10-stamp mill. Placer miners are doing very well witb tbe limited supply of water in tbe several erceks. A portion of tbe machinery of the new 10-stamp mill, which Mr, Berger ie going to erect, near Ehernherg, has arrived, and work is heing puehed upon botb mill and mine, SovutHern Arizona.—Among tbe latest and most valuable discoveries is a new dist., in a mountain range 35 miles south of Tucson. At the time of writing, specimens of tbe ore were being tested, and the results had given the utmost satisfaction. The location must be less than 25 miles distant from the timhered regions of tho Santa Rita mountains. Idaho. Buxuion.—Silver City Avalanche, Jan. : W., F. & Co., shipped from here this week 8 hars valued at $17,528 30. Loca, Reoorp.—The North Oro Fino Co. is pushing its work forward fast. The Supt. is working tbie mine through the North Discovery engine ehaft, whicb he has leased from the Owybee Co, for tbat purpose. Tbe ore in tbe drift running north ie getting better tbe further it is run. The 3d level drift has heen run ahout 25 ft. sinco work commenced, showing the ledge to he 4 ft. wide, with from 18 to 20 incbee of fine looking quartz and tbe remainder tale. The North Oro Fino Discovery ground is turning out ahout 25 tons of ore per day, which is being piled up at the Oywbee Co.’e mill. The South Discovery of the Oro Fino, which belongs to and is worked by the Ida Elmore Co., is yielding 20 tons of ore daily. Tbe Ida Elmore may he considered the leading mine in camp at preeent. Up to this time ahout 80 ft. of a very rich chute of ore has been discovered in the 7th level of that mine. Tbis chute, or chimney of ore commences ahout 100 ft. north of the sbaft and continuee to the end of the drift, which is heing run fast. The richest and hest part of the ore hitherto found is in tbe last 15 ft. of the drift. Tbe Supt. is energetically sinking and raising winzes in the 7th level on this rich hody of ore, If it is fonnd to go down any distance, he will immediately sink the main shaft for the 8th level.Tbe Owyhee Mill is running to its utmost capacity on Golden Chariot. Mr. Davis, Supt. of that mine, has about 700 tons of ore ahead of the mill. Tbe Minnesota is looking splendidly, both in the south drift aud also in the winze which is heing sunk under the old sbaft. Some of the richest gold bearing ore ever taken from any mine in camp eame from the south drift this week. The ore from the winze shows a larger proportion of silver. The foreman has outabout 80 tone of the ore. The last erushing paid $60 aton. Tbe sonth drift is in 35 ft, and the north drift about 60 ft. trom the 2d level. The Mahogony is beginning to send down ore again, which is heing worked on one side of the Elmore mill, with 10 stamps and 6 pans. It usually mills from $55 to $60 per ton, and_ tbe ore new piled up at the mill looks splendidly. The 4th level of the Mahogany is rich, with a vein from 18 incheeto 2 ft.inwidth. The drift is in ahout 50 ft, on each side of the crossno = cut or shaft in tbe 4th level. The winze is down 50 ft. from the 3d level, and the shaft is down helow tbe 4tb, for the 5th level, 55 ft. In 20 days 25 tonsof ore per day may bo expected from the Mabogany. _ Tho 4tb level drift of the Seuth Chariot is in 186 ft., showing the ledge te be folly 2 ft. thick, of ore that will pay well. The Empire mine is being worked by Mincar & Hanks, and they have 50 tons of ore ou the dump that will mill at least $150 aton. ‘The smallest amount that the ore ever paid per ton, was $182 50, and from that to $300. Tho War Exgle has very rich looking
ore in the winze, wbich is ahout 100 ft. soutb of the shaft When that is done, stoping will commence at ouce. Montana. Cuaucy Crerx.—Cor. Helena (razette, Jau. 22: Bell & Co., of El Derado, bave doubled tbe number of their hands ou tbeir mine. The I'rench boys, of tbe Miunesota, have a tbree foot vein of paying ore, and doing a good business taking it out. Purker and Woods bave strnck galena ore in a shaft on the Mineral Hill lode, and expect to etrike galena, in their tuunel on tbe Lone Hand, as soonas they break througb a key they bave in the back part of it. Brooks & Gregoire bave strnek seme galena in thetun nel of the Winnona, hut not in paying quantities. They are confident of striking a large vein of paying mineral hefore going 40 ft. further. There is considerahle galena ore being taken out of the North Pacific. All the lodes mentioned above are galena hearing quartz; hut eome pertiee claim to have struck some very rich chleride quartz, ahout 2 miles from this place. Some of it is claimed to go $1,200 per ton. There is considerahle work heing done in thet portion of tbe dist. where cblorides have heen found, and it is expected tbat large quantities of paying rock will be taken out there, in the spring. There are quite a numher of parties prospecting in this vicinity, and more parties are heing organized to commence work es soen as the snow goes off. Tae New Coan Mtnrs.—Bozeman Avant Courier, Jan, 25: As soon as the weather permits, Col. Black will commence tbe development of the new ceal mine. The indications are higbly favorahle as fer es prospected. Tbe mines are ahout 5 miles from Bezemen, accessible by a good wagon . § road, and consist of 2 well defined veins, about 200 yards apert. Tur Repvotion Wor«s.—Helena Herald, Jan. 25: Tbe Helena Reduction Works are rnuning continuously, day and nigbt. The delivery of oro is unterrupted, and tbe roasting, crushing, and smelting goes forward with the precision of clock work. aAney From one smelter alone flows 2,000 weight . ¢ of hullion every 24 bours. Vieonp.—Dear Ledge Independent, Jan, 27: J. Brannigan and others are trying to make arrangements to have smelting works erected near tbe ricb ledes of this district. Casuze.—Mr. Cameron has at lest struck the ledge in the lower drift. The rock is rich and tbere is reasen to helieve thet tbe hedy of ore now drained will he sufficient to keep at least one mill constantly running for the next 2 yeers. Utah. Lirtrz Corronwoop.—Salt Luke Tribune, Feh. 1: The Wellington Co. are now shipping very rich ore. Its assay value is $300 per ton. The Emma, Flagstaff and Vallejo are each sbipping. Oxsto Dist.—Cor. same: We have 50 or 60 men here and the greater share are at work on their leads in order to have them ready for sale in the spring, or to have their ore ready as soon as an oppertunity presents itself or mills get in here. There are 5 to 6 that will pay from tbe start, but most of the mines have to he worked, as the croppings are of low grade, but of all tbat have been worked to any extent the ore grows gradually richer. There bave alse been two new dists, formed, one south, and in still greater altitude, and one north adjeining to this one and on tbe banks of tbe river. S. L. Crry.—By telegraph: Abont 3,000 tons of ore and bullion are waiting trensportation to the East. Of tbis, ahout 1,500 tons are from the Emma mine. S. F. Stock Exchange Board, San Francisco, February 8, 1872. The last seven or eight days has been the liveliest ene the Stock Board has experienced. for many years. Tbe feature of the week has been Savage, and many other stocks have participated in the rise. The discovery of a rich body of ore in the Savage, announced on Friday night, sent the stock np so that. from that time until Monday, the value ef the mine was mere than qnadrupled. All kinds ef stocks are yet much advanced, but show a little falling off from Monday’sprices. Thesalesat the Board for the week, ending Wednesday, the 31st ult., aggreuate $1,208,000, making e total of $3,748,000 in twe weeks, The session ef the Board on Saturday was a long and active one, lasting three hours. Savage was the feature, and its advance over the prices of the morning Board ou Friday was 92. For the same time Gould & Curry advanced $50, Hale & Norcross $30, Crown Point $25, Belcher & Kentack $15, Imperial $12, Chollar-Potosi and Ophir, each $11, Cons. Virginia $8, Raymond & Ely $6.50, Alpha and Overman, each $6, Sicrra Nevada $5 and Yellow Jacket 4.50. On Monday the market opened lively in the morning, and the Board had another long and busy session. From the Board on Saturday nearly all descriptions of stocks advanced materially. Savage went up to $235 and then dropped to $225, the others synipathizing with it. Ou Wednesday morning it sold for $5,500 per foot. Its highest price before was in June, 1867— $5,000, when it was paying large dividends, Tbis morning stocks were still active but witb irregular prices. Savage receded from 310 yesterday to 625 on tbelast call of tbe Board, though $265 was hid after tbe adjournment. The amount of ibusiness transacted since the Savage strike became known on Saturday, aggregates over $10,000,000, nearly double the amount transected during any four days beretofore.
