good pay in thsir claims at Randolph Flat.
January 25, 1873.] MINING AND SCIENTIFIC PRESS. 93
Brackett & Co.—This mine is across the
gulch, opposite Duryea’s, and has yielded a
vast amountof the shining ore. The Co. after
5 years’ ateady labor, have worked out thelower
portion of their claim and are uow engaged in
running a new tunnel higher up the ridge.
They have worked out about 1,000ft, in length
of the channel, and fully as much more remains to be mined through the new tunnel.
They have driven a distance of 160ft. in solid
ledge, and an additional huudred will take thom
throngh to gravel.
Stspson & Co.—Their clan is situated a
short distance — gulch. The main flume
—38ift. in length, 23 inches in the clear on the
bottom and 28 ou the top—is the handsomest
pices of work of thnt kind ever put into a minc
in this vicinity. They also huve s branch flume
120ft. long, similarly constructed. These gentlemen intend usiny 300 inches of water which
will have a pressure of 280ft. The hank is 80
ft. in hight.
Moser, Hannrvoron & Co.—Their eclnim is
located a short distauce above Simpsou’s. The
proprietors, dro uncovering one of ths hest

of water is used in sweeping the debris away
"heen gulch, fully 2,000 inches heing emoyed,
4 Prercivay, Wavters & Co.—This claim is at
the head of Spring Gulch, and is heing got iuto splendid shape for working to advautage.
They have a fine bank of gravel 50ft, high,
easily waehed, and containing gold from top to
hottom. They have 5 and 6 iuch iron pipe,
with a fall of 76ft. 120 inches of water are
nsed. The Co. have just laid down a new
flume—16 inches wide on the hottom and 20
pa the top—witha grade of 11 iuches to the
OX.
Woxveurve.—This mine is developing into
one of the best mines in the State. The main
shaft bas reached a depth of ahout 200ft. uncovering a ledge over 4ft.in thickness, The
quartz taken out is unprecedentedly rich and
improving in quality, Ore obtained in sinking
this wesk appears to he masses of gold and
sulpherets. Good judgss estimate that the
rock during the past week will average $350
per ton—with a width of over 4ft. The five
stamp hattery on the mine is kept constantly in
operation.
West Pornt Districr. — The nnexpected
strike of rich ore in one of the tunnels of the
Lone Star, alluded to last week, has widened to
6 ft. Coarse, free gold, can he sesn in generous quantities, on the face of the tunnel.—
Judge Beeler's mine shows ore worth $90 per
ton.—Griggs & Co. ars dumping some very
healthy ore, at Camp Espirito. Thehoisting
works of the Ohio Cons. are rapidly approaching completion—Jose de Vella & Co, are working a good sized vein, near the North Fork,
with excellent results.
Gwin.—Thirty-six stamps are uow in operation, yielding an average of $1,000 per day.
The rockin the 500 and 600-ft. levels is high
grade and improving as work progresses.
Campo Srco.—Calaveras Citizen, Jan. 18:
The Sim’s claim is still progrsssing—they are
tunnelling, to strike the lead, aud will soon
commence sinking the old shaft, which is on
the lead and known to he rich. The Spsncer
mine is down 100 ft.—in sinking, the shaft was
put down straight, leaving the lead some 10 ft.
to the east—drifting to strike the vein and will
havea good thing when thsy do, as the rock
was rich on top.
Scerrrazp.—The shaft is down 112 ft., and
the rock richer than ever.
Rose Huu,—This mine, belonging to Mr.
Rhodocini, near El Dorado, has commenced
crushing again. Ten stamps are running.
KERN COUNTY.
Pr Ure.—Havilah Miner, Jan. 11: Mr. O.
M. Cummings has heen the Iucky discoverer of
half a dozen ledges in 4s many months, some of
which, npon heing developed, have proven to
he yery rich. The Goldsmith Maid is a large
vein;a cnt has heen run 12 ft. across it without having found either wall. Maria Louise is
located a quarter of a mile from the Goldsmith
Maid, prospects very rich andis a large ledge.
The Oneida Chief is 5 ft. thick and some of
the rock prospects as high as $150 per ton.
These mines are all located in ths vicinity of
the Bright Star mine, which is one of the richsst in the county.
Muus.—Jan. 18: The mills at Kernville,
Sageland, Pi Ute and Havilah are + unning
night and day, and more would startup if we
had miners to get out the quartz.
The Joe Walker mill will commence crushing rock taken from the Cumherland, iu a few
days. This mine isa quarter of a mile from
the Joe Walker, the rock is very rich, and there
is plenty of it.
Discovery.—Paul Plefferly has discovered a
very rich quartz lead just south of the McKeadney mine. The ledge has heen stripped for
over 300 ft. on the surface, and is from 1 tod ft.
in width; the rock prospects, on an average,
$80 psr ton. There are over 1,000 tons of ors
in sight.

deep, at which point they commenced their tunnel through the run of the hasin toa chute in
depth 50 it, nnder the surface; then continued
the tunnel 550 ft through and under ground, at
which point they struck good pay. At nhout
450 ft. from the mouth of the tunuel a drift 90
ft. long and 8 ft. wide was run ensterly in gravel, which yielded a profit over labor in running
of $275, A seeond drift, near the end of their
tunnel, was run easterly 90 ft. in length and 15
in width, the profits over e: penses in running
which was $325, They have also run n middle
drift hetweeu the two above mentioued to work
a block of ground which is estimated will pay
at lenst $1,500, nud which can be worked at an
outlay of $450. In additiou to the drifts easterly, a drift 40 fect long haaheen ron westerly
from the tnunel, audin neither of the drifts
has the end of the gravel heen reached
Muxrxc [ress.—Jan. 17; We understand that
the North Star has struck rich rock in the new
shaft, The ledgein the new shaft is from 10
to 12 inches in thickness and shows well in free
gold and sulphurets.

pany having completed their powder drift of 80 ft,, and
Tun their T of 49 ft. each way from ihe head of the
drift, yesterday afternoou let off a blast of 5,250 pounde
of powder, or 230 kegs, The ground was shattered and
kroken np for a considerable disiance, and miillons of
tons of gravel are now broken up. Monday next a
thousand inchee ef water ia to be turned loose into thia
gravel bank, under a pressure of over 200 ft.
Goup TUNNEL Mmve.—Thia mine, situated just below
town, which during the past 20 yeare has seen ite ups
and downs, has, for the last 18 months hcen under the
cherge of Harvey Helm, who haa worked for the purposo of finding, a regular, well defined paying ledge.
After a large outlay of money, in the purchase of machinery, laber, tools, eto., the prospect up to within the
past week was snything burencouraging. He hss‘at last
been successful, havlng encountered a large, welldefined ledge, from 4 to 6 ft. thick,
PLACER COUNTY.
Crater Hru.—Placer Herald, Jan. 18: During the
past week the Orater Hill quartz mine was aold te the
St. Patrick Mill and Mining Co. for $10,400. The mine
ia located abent one-haif mile northwest of the 8t. Patrick mill, some 3 miles west of here, in the Ophir mining district. It was worked some yeare ago, snd thongh
it was done in a very careless and slovenly manner, snd
in an old, rickety water mill, ihero was assayed frem it

which has been accumulating in the dump-house, and
the yield is about $10 per day perinan.
Divipenps.—The Bald Mountsin Co., ef Forest City,
recently declared a dividend of $1,000 per share, and
this from their first cleanup. The Kate Hardy Quartz
Co. of Ferest City have declared their first dividend.

haa been preduced and shipped frem it tothe amount of
$16,235.48. The last shipment was made last Friday
morning, and it amounted te $6,443.13. Frem 6 to8
tena of high-grade ore ia being breught up daily.
The vein frem which it is taken is irregular in width,
never failing below 18 inches, and not unfrequently
widening to 32. The east drift is grestly improving,
while the west maintains its average richness,
PoRTLAND. ~The winze that was sunk from the 100 ft.
atation haa now reached a depth of-60 ft. The ledge
shews 2 ft. in width, and the ore is of a free, rich chsracter. The base metal that first presented iiself in the
mine has entirely disappeared.
Crescent.—This mine, one of the oldest locationsin
Ely District, ia situated east of the American Flag, and
about 200 ft. west of the Sunbeam. The shaft is inclined and has a depth of 75ft. Astreak of mineral
and ledge matter has shown abont a foot in width to
the present depth, and is gradually widening. 7 =
Sinven Peak.—The incline is now down 155 ft. We
were ahown the assayer’e cetificate of ore irom the
bottom of the incline, which retorted $188.50 to the ton;
it was an assay, however, of selected rock.
CHIEF OF THE HrLu,—Tho aggregate shipmeuts from
this mine, during the montha of Oct., Nov. and Dec.,
have been something over $45,000. The main shaft is now
50 ft. helow the Burke tunnel, aud drifts are being run
beth ways. There is about 650 tons of ore at the dump,
and from 4 to 5 tons is being hoisted daily. Batiery assays returm an average of Si45 to the ton, and about 60
per cent, of whioh ia realized in hullion.
TasmanIA. —The incline ie now down 70 ft., at
which depth the vein is from 10 to 14 inches wide, and
the ore is low-grade. The walls sre regular, and thickly
covered with ’* siickinsides.”
Peavine.—The main shaft is now 200 ft. in depth, at
which point rock highly metalliferous has been struck,
and a drift started in through it, The ore for the Isst
20 ft. has been very rich, but the vein ia very narruw.
Grax & Bisuop. — The Co. are running a drift north:
erly from the 250-[t. level, and have drifted 30 ft.
through ledgo maiter without striking the hanging
wall.
Procxe.—All is activity below, about 5 tons of ore are
being hoisted daily, which is being constantly freighted
to the et Mill. There are now abont 125 tons
shead of the hill, al] classed as high-grade ore,
The water is being fast pumped out of thc .
FPiocne Wesr.— Work has been resumed on this mine.
Prospects fuir, Mair shaft 300 ft. deep.
FroraL Mii,—The fonndation for the drying kiln is
being consiructed, and preparations are being made for
the raising of the heavy slicet fron smgko slack, Tho
stamps, pans, settlers, eugiue, bolicrs, eto., are all placed in position, aud the heaviest and most expensive
work has heen completed, Some 600 fons of ore are alteady at tho will ready fur treatment; 600 cords of wood
on the ground, aud a large tank, filled with water, being aupplled wiih the samo through pipes from a spring
iu ihe mountain not far distant.
Srannany.—Jan. 10; This mine ie locaicd between the
Aimeorican Flag and the Sunbeam. On Monday a veiud
ft. wide was struck, from which ore assaying from $206
to $581 por tou was taken.

Ext Dorano SouTs Cox. Co.—The immense ore deposlt
lately discovered in the south incline 200 ft. seuth ef
tho hoisting works seems to be the greatest discovery of
rich ere ever made in this section, The wall has been
followed some 20 ft, the bresst of ore now measures
over 16 ft, and the walls atill widening. The ore in this
hody is pura chloride and horn silver, and the rich
heavy flakea seen from wsll to wall astonish all who
have examined this wonderful deposit. Thera is ere

tho company’s mill ateadily for 12 months.
Comprnation Co.—The lessees of this Co.'s gronnd
have just finished assorting up the ore extracted under
their lease, They estimaie to have about 30 tons of firstclass ore which will yield $450 per ton, and about 300
teus of second-class ore which will yleid $200 per ton.
The ore is piled up, awaiting an oppertunity for reduction in our mills here, but there seems little hope of the
milla here being able to do cnstom work while they
have se much work of their own on hand.
WASHOE.
Prosrecrinc.—Gold Hill News, Jan, 14: Five or six
miles easi of Virginia, scattered over the hilts on either
aide of the mouth of Six-mlle canon, can be found many
pieces of float quartz extremely rich in both silver aud
gold, A number of men are now enguged in collecting
together this float ore for the purpose of havingit crushed, and at the samu time find itsseurce, if possible,
DiscovERY.—Jan, 14; Fourteen miles in an easterly
direction from Virginia City, in the esstern feothills
ef the Washee range of meuntains, near the eastern line
of Storey county, is situated what is known as the
Golden Eagle MinIng Oo.’s claim. About four weoks
ago, they had stripped the ledge 12 ft. in length, and
had sunk a hole some 5 or 5 ft. deep by the side, expesing the full face of the ledge to that depth, which, to
all appearances, showed a fine deposit ef geod ore.
From the hule sunk samples of ore assayed from $23 to
$52 per ton, mostly in silver. On the lst of January
the ledge in the shaft at a depth of 30 ft. had increased
to 5 ft. in width, and three assaya ef the ore gave from
$49.53 to $263 per ton, mostly silver.
Rick Org Founn.—Jdan. 17: A gentleman to-day exhibited in Virginia seme very rich float rock, found
somewhere on the line of the Sutro Tunnel. Itis geldhearing quartz, and an abundance of the precious: atuff
is visible to the nsked eye. The specimens of ’‘float”
found thns far assay from $400 to $4,000.
Locat Ciamis.—Jan. 18: Qnite a uumber of claims
heve been located on the range in which the float gold
rock, mentioned by us a day or two since, is found. A
gentleman who has been on the ground informe us that
the same character ef float as that found on the original
lecation eccurs along the foot-hille bordering en the
valley of the Carson for a distance of two miles. Boulders of quartz several tona in weight are found, which
show fete gold, and which assay from $40 to 360, The
firat locators are about te commence operations looking
to the discovery of the orein place. They will begin
by rnnning a deep cut or trench back into the hill,
starting at point where the float disappears under the
debris from the face of the hill.
BELOHER.—Daily yield 330 tons, from the 1000 and
1100-ft, leveis, both of which ore-prodncing sections
nevor leoked so well. The 1200-ft. level is locking
finely. The main drift south, at this level, is now in
254ft, The winze from the 1100 to the 1200-ft. level, 200
ft. south of the Crown Point line, is fully completed
and in excellent ore allthe way. The main incline is
new down 40 ft. below the 1200 ft. level. Tho main drift
east frem the incline, at the 1000-ft, level is in 306 ft.,
and the drift north, at the 850 ft. level, ia in 415 ft.
Crown Pornt.—Daily yield about 400 tons, from the
1100, 1200 and 1300-ft. levels, Last Tuesday night, one
shift of men, trying to see what they could do, sent up
360 car loads in six heurs and a half frem the 1100 fi.
level — about a car-load a minute — each load of ore
weighing 12001bs. The pewerful holating facilitiesend
double. cage arrangements of this mineenabled them to
do this, beating any workin that line ever before performed en the Comstock. The ore-dumps are fnll. The
connection between the north and south drifts at the
1300-f, level being fully completed, that level is now
cool and comfortable as any oiher level in the imine,
and it is opened threugh from the incline to within 15
ft. level of the Belcher line, The 1300 ft. level will
evidently prove te be the best inthe mine. Assays from
it average about $175 to the ton. The cross-cut east is
in 115 ft., still in fair ore, with no indication of eart
wall. The main incline is now about down to the 1400ft. level.
CaLeponta.—The main north drift on the 400-ft. level
of the new works is still driven directly shead, having
passed through the ore encountered last week, apparently leaving the principal body of ore at this point to
theleft. The main drift south on the 400 ft.-level of the
new shaft is making good progress.
CHoLiar-Potos:. — Daily yield 120 tons of ore, the
assay valne of which is $32 per ton’ The body of ore
recently opened by the northwest drift at the first station is ylelding finely. The prospecting-drifts at the
760 and 850 ft. stations making good headway.
Goutp & Cunry.—The incline ia down 120 ft. below
tho 1500-ft. level, making fair progress, though the rock”
in the bottom is very hard and requirea continual
blasting,
Hate & Noroross.—The station at the 1700-ft. level
is opened, and two chutes,—one for ore and the other for
waste,— are fast approaching completion. The chutes
are being constructed on a much-improved plan, by beginning some 150 ft away from the shaft, and opening
a large incline to the shaft, capable of holding, if necessary, eeveral hundred tona of ore ata time, eaving much
of the bother and trouble often occasioned by the old
and narrow-contracted style. The engine-winze from
the north drift of the 1500-ft. level to the 1700-ft. is
down 190ft. A new feature, and one that appears to
work, well and be a great saying of both time and expense, has been introduced. viz.: that of esiablishing a
hlowsr to bo run by a small steam engine on the 1600-ft.
level of the mine, thua entirely doing away with the
expense and power necessary to forco the air down to
that level,
Kenttck.—Operations still confined to tho gleaning
of the old workings ubout tho 500 and 600-ft. levels.
OVERMAN.—Notwithetunding the steady and contin.
ued operation of both tho pump and wator tanks, tha
work of draining the shaft is making slow progress.
Over 50,000 galions of water per hour is being hoieted,
with sirong iudicailons of the suppiy slowly though
eradually weakening.
SavaoEr.—Daiiy yield over 145 tons of ore worth §28
per ion. Tho incline, tho maiu south drift on the
1,600-{t. lovel and the main drift north to connect with
iho sonth drift from the Gould & Curry ore making
good progrese,
Vurars1a Cons.—Tho shaft is down 130 ft. below the
600-ft. level, ths rock in the hottom conilnuiuy to work
well. The main north drift on the 1,167-ft. level from
ths Gould & Curry shalt, is still driven ahead.
YELLOW JackeT.—The lowest or 1,500-ft. level being
drained of water, drifting eust for the ledge is re-umed
from the incline. Thia drift is nowin about 100 ft.
At the 1,400 ft. level the east drift Is nearly 100 ft. inio
iho ledgo inatter, but the face isin barren quartz and
perphyry. The Comstock lode is over 300 ft. wide ut
this peint. Drifting north and cross-cutting cart at the
1,300-{t. level.
Anizona Ann Utan.—The heavy body of water tapped
in the shaft during the fere part of the week has caused
an ontire suspension of that part of the work at present,
Adriftat the 250-ft. level to connect with another at
the same level from the Globe tunnel has just been
commenced.
JvuL1u4.—Cutting ont for a new station, at the 1,000-ft,
level, is making good progress. The main east drift ou
the 800-ft, level, is in 403 ft. the face still in low grade
ore,
KNIOKERBOCKER.— The mein west drift is in 500 ft. the
face being in a mixture of clay, quartz and porphyry.
Insupance.—The incline is down 105 ft. below the
tunnel level, the rock in the bottom working qulto
hard.
BALTmMore Con.—A very favorable, yet net unexpected change has taken place in the prospecta of the mino
during the past week. The drift fer the ledge; at the
250-ft. level, is in 240 ft.; it passed through clay, Yesterday it cut through this clay wall into ledge matter,
being a mixture of qnarizand clay, from which camea
strong flow of water, which taxed tho pumping and
bailing facilities of the company to the utmost at first,
butit isfast subsiding, Someofthe qnartz from the
faco ef the dritt gives good assays, encouraging the hope
that a good body of ore may be nesr by.
BuckEEYE,—This mine is tur ing out ahout 30 tons of
ore per day, the assay valuc of which is nearly $20 per
ton, keepiug both milis of the company steadily running. The ore stopes, both sonth and north of the incline. are looking aplendidly.
Smiver Hint.—The shaftisdoewn 105 ft. below the
first station, the entire shaft in qusertz and lew grade
ere, A new station at this point is being opened as
rapidly as the necessary timbere can be procured, The
main south drift is still driven ahead the face in good
ore. The main drift nerth is pressed ahead to strike
the chimney of ore feund in the old upper works,
Union Con. The northeast drift on the east side of
the ledge, is in 57 ft., the’face still in low grade ore,
Utah.
SATURN FURNACE.—Salt Lake Tribune, Jan 10: Situated at Sandy Station, is making a very successful ron
wiih 2 cupolas, turning ont irom 10 to 12 tons of bullion
daiiy.
Srockton Dis,—SiLver Kinc.—Thls mine is situated
13g milesnortheast of thistown There is a tunnelruna
distance of 125 ft. following the ledge. Ata peint 100
ft. frem the mouth of the tunnel, there is 8 shaft sunk
to the depth of 97 ft. that runs in minerai, though the
ledge appears to be breken in places. At the bottoin of
this shaft there is another tunnel mn 55 ft., and a shaft
sunk from the back end to the depth ef 55 ft. The
character of th ore is galena and carhonate, and is $26
in silver to the ten, and yields 40 per cent. lead.
Granp Croes,—The tunnel is in a distance of 183 ft.
and frem thence there is an incline shaft sunk 65 ft.
deep, From the botiom of this incline a tunnel is run
westerly 50 ft. There can be seen a well formed ledge
$2 inches thick, encased between two walls, perfect in
appearance. I am told by ono of the owners of thia
mino that the ore ia worth $50 in silver to the ton, and
that it carries 65 per cent. lead. Character of ore is
mestly galena, theugh mixed with carbonate.
Dertance.—Tunnel in 75 ft. aud passes through the
location made by the I. X. L. company, From the back
end of this tunnel there is an incline sunk te the depth
of 30tt. which shows abent 2 ft. of galena and carbonate ore, worth, I am told, $80 in eilver to the ton, and
carries 50 per vent. of lead.
MusoaTinE.—Situated 2 miles to the southeast of this
town. The incline shaft in this mine is down 85 ft. and
shows 3 ft. of ore, the character of which is mostly car.

the owners that thie ore ia worth $50 to the ten in silver
and that it carries 60 per cent. lead.
GreaT Basty.—Tunnel is in 70 ft. snd an incline is
Bunk from the backend 30 ft. deep. In this incline
there appears to be about 2} ft. of ore, mestly carbonate, that I am told, is worth $40 to the ton in eilver, snd
carries 50 per cent. lead.
Quanpary Oo.—The shait in this mine is down 110 ft,
follows the ledge down, and pitchee te the nerth on an
angle of 10 degs., the direction of this ledge being east
and west. At the bettom of this shaftthere are two
drifts run, one following the ledge 30 ft. esst and the
other the same distance weet. At the back end of the
last named drift there appears to bes large bedy of ore,
though the partiee have not, as yet, drifted through it,
In the east driit there is, perhaps, 4 ft. of ore in sight.
The character of the ere is carbonate, with a smail percentage of galena mixed, and is said te be worth from
$75 te $100 to the ton silverand carrics 40 percent lead.
Our Frrrz.—Locatiom embraces $1,000 ft. Theshaft
shows a vein about 18 inches thick. I understsnd that
& tene of this ore worked at Jacobs & Co's. furnace, in
this town, yielded #8! insilver to the ton, and 50 per
ceni. lead.
Mono.—Cor. Utah Mining Journal, Jan. 14: The incilne shaft is down 308 ft., has 5 drifts run on the right
hand side in approachiug the bottom of the incline, and
3ontheleft. The average distance that each drift is
run, ig about 30 ft., making the whole diatance prospected ubout60 ft. This ledgeis situated in a limestone
formation. Tho character of the ore ig horn-silver,
blacksulphurets, carbonate and galena mixed, and is
aaid to be worth more than the ore taken from any
other mine in the Territory. The company have on
hand about 20 tons of high grade ore, that they think
will sample $3,000 totheton. Also about 25 to 80 tong

The aversge thickness of the ledge is abont 3 fi.
Uraz QUEEN.—The incline shaft is down 140 ft., and
thence from the bottoin of thia incline, there is a tunnel run 100 ft. Thirty ft. from the back end of this
tunnel thereis a stoperunning upwards of 25 or 30 ft.,
that connects this tunnel with another tunnel running
from the Converse ahaft. The general average for
thickness of ledge—for all the work done—is about 3 ft.
The character of this ore is argentiferous carbonate and
oxides of lead, and is worth about $100 to the ton on
general average.
KEARSAROE.—Seveuty-five ft, from the mouth of the
incline an ore chamber sets in, that appeara to extend
downward 50 ft,, and is 30 ft. wide by 20 ft. deep. From
this ore chamber, I nnderatand, there hes been a large
quantity of high grade ore taken. From the lowerend
of the chamber there is a shaft aunk, following the
