§. F. Stock and Exchange Board,
Tuvrsnay, Jan. 2d, 1873.
The stock markst this wesk has not been
very lively, the holidays and tbe wsather both
combining to decrsass business. The leading
stocka are thought to be bslow theirreal valuss
and ownera are holding on fora rise. The Ely
District mines are ratber in ths background,
and ssrious disputes have occurred in this district about mining property. The mills on the
Caraon rivsr are now running full and the railroad carrisa as mnch as bsfore the fire in ths
tunnel, so the Washoe minea ought to pick
up alittle. The Belcher and Crown Point are
sxpsctsd to resnme dividsnds thia month, which
will bstter ths credit of their locality. Tbers
is said to be more monsy now in circulation in
Virginia City than in any city of its aize in the
Unitsd Statss, and ths local press ia aanguine
that tbe future will bs still more prospsrous
thau tbe past. Tbe unusually large number of
new incorporations this week ought to be bsnificial to our mining interest, but that remains
to bs asen. If one out of twenty of thsm ars
placed on tbe dividsnd paying lst, we may
considsr oursslvssin nck. Several petroleum
mining companiss will be noticed aa well aa a
number of coal mining companiea,
On Friday the stock markst waa very quist,

Geological Survey.
Ws csll the attention of numeroua parties
who psrsiat in tbs assertion that nothing has
really bsem accomplished by Profesaor Whitnsy
in the Geological Survey of California, to the
following notice of the mannerin which 1 map
of hie aurvey was received by the learned Professore of Cambridge:
* At the November meeting of the Academy of
Sciences, held at Cambridge, Mass., Professor
J.D. Whitney read a paper entitled ** Notice of
tbe Progrese of tbe Topographical Work of the
Geological Survey of California."’ His elucidation of tbe work and tbe maps drew forth
commendatioue trom Professor Agassiz and
Pierce, Professor Agassiz eaid he had been critically examining tbese maps, and was surprised
at their extent tbeir beauty aud accuracy. The
geological eurvey of France had been going on
for more than thirty yeare, but kad not produced eo much in the way of topographical work
ae had been done in tbe short time of the geOUR MINING SHAREHOLDERS’ DIRECTORY.

Palmer's Postal Telegraph Bill.
Palmsr’s bill providing for the sstablishmsn t
of a postal tslsgraph service will rsceive tbs almost unanimous approval of tbe Committee on
Appropriations. 1. Palmer gives some intsresting statisitcs relative to tbe effect upon the
prsss of England by the reduction of telegrapb
tates. Formerly the English tslegraph aent
news reports to only 173 journals in the ysar.
Aftsrwards tbs Postoffics ssnt them to 467.
The telegraph companiss sent during the ssssion of Parlimsut nsarly 6,000 words daily, and
duriug ths remaindsr of the ysar 4,000 words
daily. Ths Postoffice in the year ‘afterwards,
sent dnring the session of Parlimsnt nearly 20,000 words daily, and during tbe remainder of
the year nearly 15,000 words daily.
Tbe increase in private business was at ths
same rats. Under the present system of telegrapbing in the United States, thers is not an
adequats degres of sccuracy, secrecy and
promptuess in delivery of mesaagss.
Tslegraph offices ars oftsn placed in tbs
charge of boys immature iu experience and education, and companies locate tbeir offices in
rooms devoted to otber kinds of business and
unprotected from tbe intrusion of curious and
mischievous visitore. The Postoffice Department ie sworn to secrecy. On the otherhand,
telegraph operators are under no legal obliga
tions not to divulge the contents of messagee,
Here is a mass of etatistics which are unanswerable as argumenta for the chaoge demanded by the people in the telegraph eystem.
They fortify the position assumed by tbe press

friends of the measure everywhere. Tbeopponents of thie rigbteousand equalizing reform

tbs loose hand-hole bead with sucb fores that

tbe room witb a cloud of sooty substancs. Tbe

ths boilsr was not injured. Ths Journal though
