February 7, 1874.3 MINING AND SCIENTIFIC PRESS. 91 New Gravel Mill. We ars iaformed that the ten-stamp gravel mill lately conetrneted by D. C. Wicham, for Goldner, Siront & Angaard, was pntin operation on Monday of last week—on trinl—preparatory to acceptanco hy the latter uamed gentlemen. The mill worked like a charm, and we are told that mill-men who bave examiaed it, declare it to be the most complete mill of the kind ever bniltin this connty. The iron work wes made in this city, by 11. 8S. Morey, of the Placerville iron foundry. The stamps arc fonr hundred and fifty ponuda each; each stamp has an eight inch drop, and makes elghty-six drops per minnte, with foll head. The mill is operated by water power, a pressure of two hnndred and fifty having heea attained; the water is driven throngh an iuch nozzle against an iron hurdy-gurdy wheel which makes a bnndred aad twenty revolutions per minnte. ‘The capacity of the will ia forty tons per twenty-four hours, of the kind of gravel—or cement—extracted from the claim. ‘The owners have soms eight huadred tons of gravel on the dump, which has besn mined out eince the mill was coatracted for. With but litle interruption, the mill has made full time siace itstarted. Good ore anticipated by the owners of this mine and mill, located abont five miles east of this city. May they not be diseppointed. We nnderstaad that Mr. Wicbam has a contract for hnilding another gmvel mill, Smith’s Fiat, fora San Francisco Co. Come elong, gentlemen, there are yet millions of tons of gravel in thia vicinity that will pay for working. A little nerve nds capital is all that is required to make gravel miuing a snecessa here.— i Dorado Republican, Rye Patch Items. This place basa flns ten stemp mill, capable of redncing fifteen tons of ore per day, connected with which is a Stetefeldt roasting fnrnace. These works are in charge of Superintendent Crittenden, to whose maaagement is due the present prosperity of the Rye Patch Mill and Mining Company. The mil! and furnace are rnuning to their full capacity, besides which ths company ship ahont ten tons of ore a day to Winaemnecen for rednction, the company’s mill at Rye Patch not heing of sufficient capseity to work all the ore taken from the mine. The minea are located abont fonr miles from Rys Patch Station, in aud near Butte cafon, The first of uote is the Batte, owned by the Rye Patch Mill and Mining Company. ‘This mine, which takes rank with the first-class mines of the State, gives‘employment to fortyfive men, prodoces abont forty tons of ore daily, and is steadily increasing in velae. The next one of importance is the Alpha mine, which has produced a vast amount of rich ore. Work on this mine has been snapended for some time, owing to company difficulties, hut the company intend putting on a force of men inafew days, when the Alpha will egain take its place as one of the hnilion producing mines of this State. Charles Harley, of San Francisco, has men at work on his elaims, with flattering prospects. There ere several other companies at work in the district on old locations, which look well. —Silver Stale. Tue Waire Pine Tunnen.—We yesterday had a call from Mr, Walton, one of the old residents of Hamilton, end one of the principal land owners in that town. His object in visitiag Enreka is to solicit the signatnres of onr citizens to a petition he has in circulation throoghont Eastern Nevada, for the develop: ment of White Piae mountain. It is proposed to petition Congress for a grant or franchise of the monntain, forthe purposeofa rnnning a tannel through it of ruilroad size, which will be about eight or nine miles in length. The originators of this work do not intend to ask a snbsidy or loan from the Government, merely the fraachise of the land; so as to prevent any interference with the title of the land efter the commencement of the work. It is proposed to form a joint stock company, with sufficient eapital to carry out the intended designs. Mr, Walton has secured over 2,000 names to his petition, and will start in a day or sofor Washington to lay his plans before the representatives, and through them hring the matter before the proper committee.— Sentinel, Hynrav.icrino 1y Monrana.—The New Northwest says: The Flint Creek Ditch and Mining Company this week received their large invoi of iron pipe, etc., for their mines on Flint creek. It consists of 300 feet of 22-inch No. 18 iroa, and 1,000 feet of 15-inch, No. 16 iron, with a No. 2 Little Giant, Reflector Lamp, and tools necessary for puttiag it incomplete working order. The matsrial costs Jaid down here abont $4,000, Olarke, Steele & Co. also received 1,200 ft. of 11, 15 and 18-inch pipe, Littls Giant, ete., a few days ago, aud will place it for operations in Squaw Gulch next spring. The eppliances purchased by those two compauies are the same as those nsed hy the hest miners of Oalifornia, and the geutlemeu, while looking to their own interests in procuriag the most approved appliances for hydraulicing will have done, if successful, a good thing for all hydraulic miners, aud we believe demonstrate the richest diggings of Muntuna ure the extensive bar deposits that have horctofore been passed by as nnavailable. Counties or Catrronnra.— There ars over fifty-ons conaties in Californie. Thsy range in size from 42 (San Francisco) to 23,472 (Sau Bernardino) sqnare miles; and in popniation, by the censns of 1870, from 430 to 150,000, Mono being the least end San Francisco the most populous. The average area is 3,725 unre miles, which is nearly twice the size of Delaware. Theiraverage populatioa is about 11,000. San Bernardino is lerger than West Virgiuia. . Zixo Mixes.—Zino ore in considerable quantities was reeently discovered in Laae county, near what is known ag Cow creek. A small quantity of the ore was dug out and forwarded to this city. Myr. Fisk made an assay of the metal, and fonnd it to contain a large per cent. of zinc.—Oregonian. Avausta turns out yearly over onc hundred thousaud dollars’ worth of tools for outting gmnite. They are used all over the couutry. Tnx estimated capacity of all tbs blast furnacesinthe Uuited States is 4,371,217 tons per aunum, DEWEY & CO., American & Foreign Patent Agents, OFFICE, 33 MONTGOMERY STREET, 8. ¥, The best, spoeediest, and eurest method for you to obtain patents, file caveats, or trausact auy other important business with the Patent Office at Washington, or with foreign countries, is through the agency of DEWEY & CO., PUBLISHERS OF THE MINING AND SCIENTIFIC PRESS, SAN FRANCISCO, an able, responsible, and long-established firm, and the principal agents on this side of the continent.
