Mining Stocks,
The mining share market has heen ina state
of excitement for the past few dsys. Am advance along the line occurred, everythiug going
up higher than it was for some time past. The
fluctuations of the market will he seen hy referring to our stock tahles in another colnmn.
This rise has heen long and auxiously looked
for hy brokers, who will now reap their harvest. As regards the situation in the mines,
it still remains favorahle everywhere aloug the
line of the Comstock. In that direction, according to the Enterprise, there is nothing to
cause a panic, or even the slightést nneasiness.
From the lower levels of several of our leading
mines—where work has for a long time heen in
@ great Measure suspended, on account of had
and heated air—we may expect soon to hear
good reporis, as the works for their proper
ventilation are fast approaching completion.
In mines where drifts have heen running for
months in lines parallel with the vein, only
touching here and there its protuherances and
sinnosities, preparations for crosscutting are
heing made; indeed, in a few instances cross
drifts have already heen commenced. The ore
hodies already developed expand and improve
the work of their exploration progressses and
in many instances these have proved to he deposits of undouhted permanence, Good work
is everywhere heing done hy those of our companies engsged in prospecting. Itis true they
have their occasional mishaps and that they at
times encounter unlooked-for obstacles, as
great floods of water, very hard rock or had,
swelling ground, hut hy the exercise of patience, perseverance aud skillful engineering
all difficulties are eventually overcome.
Tux Stevens mine, or West Argentine, Colotado, has heen gold to Chas, Menderhall, of .
Cincinnati, for $37,000 in cash.
Mining Accidents.
Two men, Eugene Clifford and James Ryan,
were seriously injured hy a pecnliar accident
recently in the Cerro Benito mines. The Hollister Enterprise says they were engaged in sinking an air shaft to connect with one of the tunnels, and had got down a depth of 35 feet when
the point of the pick in the hands of Clifford
struck into an old charge of powder, exploding
it and hurning the men frightfully. Ryan,
who was standing off at a little distanoe, had
his hands and face hnrned—the left hand hadly,
His companion fared much worse, as he was
standing immediately over the flame. His
body, face and arms were shockiugly hurned,
yet it is thought he will recover. This old
blast, it seems, was dropped dawn into a creyioe when the men were hiasting on a former ocoasion, and remained intact until struck hy the
pick, as alluded to.
On the 10th inst., a miner named John
Evans was instantly killed hy falling down the
shaft of the Sierra Nevada mine. At the time
the accident occurred he was hriuging up some
timhers from the hottom of the shaft on the
cage. Itissupposed that the timhers caught
against the lagging and rolled ahout on the cage,
knocking him off.
Onthe 18th inst., a man nsmed Thomas
Ripley, mining near Chinese camp, was heing
lowered into his shaft when the noose in which
he was seated slipped from the hight, precipitating him a distance of 85 feet. He struck on
his feet with terrific force, hreaking every hone
in the lower portion of his hody aud killing
him instantly.
A miner named John Kuareshorough broke
his right leg last week by falling into a
chnte from the 1,200-ft. level of the Belcher
nine,
Charles Shepardson received injuries on the
17th inst. in the Sutro tunuel, from which he
died two days after. The deceased waa carman inthe tunnel. The cars hold ahout three
tons of rock each, and are hauled out of the
tnnnelin small trains hya mule. It seems
that Shepardson had hrought out a train of
losded cars, three of which he pushed out upon
a track resting upon a trestlework intended to
support the weight of empty cars only. Hegot
hetween two of the cars for the purpose of
dumping one of them. While he was lifting
on the car the track suddenly gave way under
his feet. As he fell he was csught hetween
two cars and crushed across the hreast.
On Saturday morning as a three-decker oage,
containing loaded oars, was heing hoisted up
the north compartment of the Consolidated
Virginia shaft, the cahle suddenly Tet at
the top of the gallows frame. The Enterprise
says tbat the cage, whioh had almost reached
the 1,300-ft. level, fell hut ahout four or five inches, when it was caught and held suspended
in the shaft. The cahle descended the shaft
with a noise which resounded through the miue
like crashes of thunder. The miners state that
the friction of the falling cahle caused hright
flashes of fire to stream from the sides of the
shaft, as they could plainly see wherever
it passed the stations at the several levels.
Luekily no one was hurt hy the accident.
