Tux fotlowing is mostly condensed from Journals published in thelnterior,in proximity to the mines mentionet.
California.
AMADOR COUNTY.
Tre Bro Drrcwe.— Dispatch, Oct. 10: Tho new
pipe for repairing the recent break in the Amsdar canal has been placed in pnsitioa, and the
water is now rapidly flowing to thedietributing
reservoir. Miners wha have becn waiting for a
supply af water from this ditch oan now commence preparing to work their claims.
Quicxamvea.—Reports
from the Amador
qaicksilver mine oontinne ta be of the most
favorable character. It is being developed as
rapidly ss the means of the stockholders will
permit.
_
Prooresstno.— Work on the uew hoisting
works at the Oneida miue is progressing fiuoly,
and when completed will be ave of the most
substantial character.
CALAVERAS COUNTY.
Gwis Mine.— Chronicle, Oct. 10: Latelligence
from the Gwin mine is afthe moet encouraging
charscter. The ledge ia the 900-ft level has
widened out to 22 feet, with the qnalily of the
rock good andimproving.
Toirty-six stamps
are in motion. Oor statement last week that
the “aggregate yield nf the mine is $6,000 per
moath,” waa on error. We meantto say
“week” iastead of ‘‘month.”
San Brona.—Everything
continnes favorable
at the San Bruno mine in Mosquito Gulch. Another ernshing af rock is miaed, hauled to the
mill and the stamps will be set at work npon it
next Monday marning. The yield of the San
Bruno, siace the pay chimney was struck, has
been enormous, and there are no indications
that the mine will ever ‘‘let up.”
Weer Port Distercr.—Levels
are beingrun
fram the main shsft of the Mina Rica at the
depth of 110 feet. The vein is 5 feet wide, 2
feet of No.1, and three feet of low grade ore.
Twenty tons, crushed at Harris’ cnstom mill,
yielded $35 per ton of free gold; the low grade
will average near $10 per ton.
The Zacatero continues to snpply its 10stamp mill with facility. The stopes above
the lower levels demon*trate conclusively that
the quantity and quality of the ore gain in
depth. Shaft, 300 feet: deepest in the district.
Miller & Co., at Anderson’s Flat, have a
large, heavy snlphuretted vein at the depth of
100 feet. Ore croshed yielded $15 per ton of
frae gold.
Haskins & Co., at Big Flat, are sinking on a
yery large vein, 2 feet thick of which ie valned
at not less than $100 per ton. Shaft 110 feet
deep.
At permanent working shaft has been started
on the Woodhouse, on an extensive ore chnte
which yielded 400 tons of nnassorted. ore, milling a trifle oyer $100 per ton in early times.
All the deeper workinga in the gold-quartz
mines are proving to be profitableinvestments,
beyond expeotation, aud withont a singlé exception.
COLUSA COUNTY.
Tue Exow Mrmz.—Colusa Sun, Oct. 10: We
are pleased to announce that the Elgin quicksilver mine iain a prosperous condition, and
its fortunate owners sre taking out large qnantities of the precious metal. On Wednesday
they shipped 9 tanks of quicksilver to San
Francisco. Onr fellow-townsman, E. Chapin,
is one of the principal owners in this mine, and
we are glad to record the good fortnne of that
gentleman and those who are associated with
him,
FRESNO COUNTY.
Muvine Inrenests.—Fresno
Expositor, Oct.
7: The mining iuterests have scarcely been
touched. Gold-bearing quartz veins and placer
mines exiat and will be worked profitably; the
railroad enables the better class of our oopper
orea to reach market at a profit to the minera,
and lower freights will make this classof mines
a boundless sonrce of wealth; coal and iron, at
an early day, will help to swell the mineral
wealth of our county, and for years our monntains have prodnced a large share of the quicksilver thrown on the msrkets of the world, and
yet this class of mining is but in its infancy,
an uew and valuable cinnabar mines are being
frequently found within the limits of Fresno.
INYO COUNTY.
Pawamint. — Cor. Sau Bernardino Argus:
There is a plentiful supply of water in the
canon. The town is flonrishing, s1id the
sounds of the hammer are heard in all directinns. We have one store of general merchandise, butcher chop, restaurant, harber shop,
two physicians, eeveral lawyers and any number of rum mills. Tne Snrprise Valley Mill
and Water Company, of San Francisco, are at work and doing all that can be done with lack
of tools. In a few days every man who wants
work can get it.
Trails and roads are being built to the mills,
grading for mill sites and improvements generally are the order of the day. I have never
been in & more lively camp, and a future is nredicted that will be second to not even Virginis.
The mines look exceedingly well, showing ss
fine looking ore as is ever seen for such large
veins, varying as they do from three feet to
thirteen and fourteen feet. The town site is
about 5,000 feet above the level of the sea and
the mines vsry from six to eight thousand feet
above the same base. The climate is delightfal. Snow does not remain iu the valley bnt a
very short time, and is rsrely more than twelve
inchee deep. Lumber is scarce aad commands
a high price.
LAKE COUNTY.
Oun Mrnrs.—Lake County Bee, Oct. $: Our
chrome miue, three miles sonth of town, still
yields its ore by the ton, and from present
prospects will continae to do so. Quicksilver
casts reflections all aronad us so that our valleys and monvtains may in time become stnpendons coavex aud ooncave mirrors used for
sstroaomical observation in discovering the
inhsbitants of Mare.
MARIPOSA COUNTY.
Mryine on Bucssysy.—Maripaxa Gazette, Oot,
10: Catrou & Co, have their will mnuing and
are crushing qaartz which promises to yield
satisfactorily. Tho mining is done hy Chinamen. Neal & Grsbsm are riggiag up an engine for pnmpiag aud hoisting ore at the shaft
of the old Mexican mine, near Catron’s, apd
we may expect to hear favorable reports from
them soou.
MONTEREY COUNTY.
Minerat Discovertrs.—Monterey Democrat,
Oot. 10: There is quite a furore sbout discoveries of mines, nf gold, silver and quicksilver in the mountains east and west of the
Salinas valley. The druggist, over at Monterey, is coutinually called upou to test rocks
which in the estimation of those bringiag
them promise uutold fortune, and from the
regiou about Soledad come reports of valuable
leads of silver ore. Asa snpplement ta these
last, it is positively stated that there is an
asphaltum spring aboat ten miles from the
Mission. Since wriling the above, we hear
that magnetic iron ore of fine quality has been
fouad recently in the hills east of Chualar,
specimeas seat ta Suuta Clara for sssay having
received there strong commeadalion.
NAPA COUNTY.
Irens.—Free Press: A receat assay of quartz
from the Bourbon Silver miae reached $560 to
tho ton. The mine is Jacated ou Mt. St.
Helens, near the Calistoga Silver miae, aad is
the property of Foss & Connelly.
Ore is being taken from three levels ou the
Calistoga Silver mine, at the rate of about fifty
tousaday. Over a thousand tons of ore 1s
piled up ready for milling this wiuter. The
mil] runs night and day.
NEVADA COUNTY.
CouumBra Hru.-—Transcript, Oct. 10: We
learn that the Enreka Lake Water and Mining
Company are going to put seventy-five or a
handred men at work on mining ground owned
by them at Colnmbia Hill, the comiug winter,
The Union gravel mining compauy at Kennebee Hill have stopped operations for want of
water. They have commenced cleaniug up
their sluices and will complete their work in a
few more days.
The ditch of the Millon Company to Moore’s
Flat is being rapidly coustructed. They expect to have water through it by the first of
December. The miners at Moore's Flat are waiting anxionsly for the completion of this ditch,
and so are the people of the Flats generally.
The North Bloomfield Gravel Mining Company are briaging their extensive and magnificent works to arapid completion. All the
connections are made in their tunnel, except
two, and these will be made in a few days
more. The company has commenced placing
sluices in that portion of the tunnel which has
been completed. They expect to be ready for
washing through their tnnnel by the first day
of December. : ‘
New Yorr Hirt Mine.—G. V. Union, Oct.
11: We yesterday saw at Findley’e bank a
splendid specimen of nuartz which had just
been taken out of the further end of the New
York Hill tunnely The specimen showe the
free gold in plentiful quantities and fine and
heavy sulphurets. The character of the rock
itself, independent of its show of metal. is
what the miners oall fine and lively. The New
York Hill is developing a snlendid ledge.
SONOMA COUNTY.
Irens.—Sonoma Democrat, Oct. 10: The
splendid furnace of the Rattlesnake mine commenced burning adobes this week. These
adobes are filled with free metal.
The Annie Belcher has a good showing of
metal on the dump snd mote in sight. A 20
ton furnace is in course of construction.
Tho road from the Georgia mine to Pine
Flat is complete. There is 100 tous of o:0 on
the dump at this mine.
GUESNEVILLE.—The thirteen-ton furnace for
the Mount Jackson is jnst done, snd 14 pronounced by those who have seen it as te best
in the county. In the lower tunnel the foot
wall of the ledge has been struck; nt » depth of
210 feet they cut through 15 feet of pay rock.
Ten thousand dvllars has been exp ‘nded so far.
From this time it is thonght that the mine will
pay its way. The company have 25 white men
at work.
The Great Eastern has been leased to Tiburcio Parrott and others for six years. The owners of the mine to have one flask out of every
four taken out.
SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY.
Gouip Mr. Co.—San Bernardino Argus, Oct.
5: The Gold Monntain M. Co., at Bear Valley,
have been working quietly and steadily. We
eaw to-day the hills of lading for the first shipment of material for the construction of a firstclass 40-stamp mtll. When the mill is completed we will have not only the largest mill
south of San Francisco, but the largest ledge
in the State.
Tue Snow Srorm.—This mine is in Oro District. From a report on the mine by J. W.
. Yonng, dr., we learu thst the ledge crope out
boldly over 2,000 feot, the grestest exteut af
the vein not visible being lees than 50 feet.
The width of the ledge sverages about five
feet; the uarrowest portion measuring three
fect. The qnartz is gold hearing, as the percentage of silver it carries is very swall. From
8 general average of rock tsken trom the present workings he ore will mill by ordinsry
amalgamation $34.50. A great portion of the
ore shawa free gold.
TRINITY COUNTY.
Extensrve Pseparatrons.—Triuity Journal,
Oct. 10: The Union Hill company hsve 500
feet of tunnel ta run before any more washing
is done, snd they hsve gono to work at it with
the intentian of completing it as soon as possihle. Three shifts are now Seine worked in the
tnnnel and shaft—8 hours on and 16 off. The
shaft is being snnk on the line of the tannel
aud when down to the proper level, the tunnel
will be pnshed ahead fromit. A new 40-inch
flume will alsa be pnt in.
Fnom Crynaspar.-—-Mr. Fred. Loring, of Trinity Center, was in town snd informs ns that
Cinnabar District is floarishing. Hawkett &
Lytle have put up fanr new retorts, and Warland & Co. have also placed fonr in positioa.
TULARE COUNTY.
Minenan Kiyo Mines.—Visalia Delta, Oct. 8:
. Wiley Watson osme to town a few days siuce
from the Mineral King mines. He brought
with him a ton of ore from the McGiunis lead,
to be sept to San Francisco for asssy. An ayerage of six asssys heretofore made of this lode
shows $48 per ton in silver. Creighton, who
paid $1,500 for a claim on the Lady Franklin,
has suspended work for the season. This claim
is on very high ground. Ford & Belden are
making rapid progress with their tunnel, and
expect to reach the lead this fall’ The owners
of the Red Comanche claim have made an arrangement with Mr. Whitcomb, of San Francisco, to sell the claim of 1,500 feet for $20,000,
the money to be paid this month, An assay
from the Annie Fax shows gold, $6.48, and silver, $43.38 per ton. The Lady Franklin company have drifted along the lead some thirty
fect, and have taken out some forty or fifty tons
of ore. What is needed in these mines, before
any progress csn be made, is the completion of
a good wagon road.
TUOLUMNE’ COUNTY.
A Goon Miyz.—Independent, Oct. 10: The
Old Tuolumne company will put up a large,
firet-class mill on their mine. This claim,
abont 2%4 miles north of Columbia, will yet
prove one of the finest in the county. The
vein is four feet wide in the shaft, shows free
gold all through, and will go $100 to the ton.
They have also a sulphuret vein 6 feet wide, 12
feet from the above, 25 per cent. of which is
sulphurets, which assay from $100 to $2,000 to
the ton.
New Mitz at Sovurepy Mixze.—Workmen
have arrived from San Francisco, as also the
machinery, for to put into operation on the
Soulsby mine a 10-stamp mill—full Howe’s
mortars, weighing from thirty-five to forty hnndred. red.
Tuar $250 Cuunz.—Chas. Wagner and Lndwig Schwartz were the lucky ones who picked
np the nugget weighing fifteen onnces, in Colnmbia, on Friday of last week. They had just
commenced working on the old claim on the
northwest corner of the Northup ranch, when
they were struck with this streak of good luck.
The piece was nearly all gold and is worth
about $250. The claim had not been worked
for many years.
The Patterson mine employs right along
from 35 to 40 men; and as they get down and
open out many more will be needed. Our
business men osn see from this, the importance
of having our qnartz mines opened.
Nevada.
WASHOE DISTRICT.
ConsotinaTED Virom1a.—Gold Hill News,
Oct. 8: Daily yield, 300 tons of ore, mostly extracted from the 1,200, 1,300 and 1,400 ft.
levels. The ore breasts on the 1,200and 1,300ft. levels are beiug coutinued both north and
south, still in rich ore. The ore stopes on the
1,400-ft. levels are being continued both north
aad sonth, still iu rich ore. The ore stopes on
the 1,400-ft. level are opening out richer aud
more extensive every day. At the point where
the ledge was first opened on this level it has
beeu cross-cnt to the east clay wall, showing
the ore vein to be 89 ft. in width, with 78 ft. of
rich milling ore. The new mill is steadily approaching completion and will probably be in
rnnning order in abont 60 days,
Srenaa Nevapa.—A heavy flow of water has
sgain been struck in the bottom of the new
ehaft, bnt which is handled hy the pump with
the most satisfactory ease. A new and what
promises to be a favorable ore development,
was made duriug the past week in a north
drift run from the old Sierra Nevada tunnel.
This drift was started at a point abont 650 ft.
from the month of the tunnel, and had been
ran but a few ft. when a whitish quartz and ore
was strnck, assayiug largoly in gold. The
drift has been rnn 14 ft. in this body of ore,
which still continnes in the face, and an upraise has just been commenced to ascertain the
extent of the ore in an npward direction. The
mill is kept steadily running on ore from the
mine. Daily yield 65 tons of ure.
Woonvitie.—The north drift on the 300-ft.
level, two days ago, encountered an entirely
new body of fine ore, which promised to develop into a much larger hody than any heretofore discovered. This isa very important discovery, as it is the farthest point to the
northward thst hss been reaohed, snd demonstrstcs the extension of the are bady in thst
direction. Stoping mnt au the are body between the 200 and 300-ft. levels has been commenced. Daily yield 25 tons of are.
Opxir.—The ore stopes nu both the 1,300
snd 1,465-ft. levels are still yieldiug the usual
qnsutity af nre, whioh amount can be greatly
inoreased whenever it is desirable to do sa.
The yield of the Empire State mill for 26 daye’
rn during September was $51,000. Land's
mill in seven-mile cajion, waa started np on are
from the mine yesterdsy. The addition of this
mill will more thau double the yield of bnlion
over last month.
InpeataL-ExPrRe-—T he main south drift on
the 1,850-ft. level is still driven vigorously
ahesd, the fsce in fine ore. The vertices] north
winze on the ssme level meationed in onr
previous reports, as being started to counect
with the old iacline north winze, has just
reached the ore hody, which is of a rich character; this drift will, in a short time, connect with
the incline winze.
Cauirornta.—The north drift on the 1,400ft. level from the Coasolidsted Virginis shaft,
will connect with the south drift from the
Ophir in a day or two moro, Insuring a perfect
ventilation of the mine to that depth.
AMEalcAN Frat. — Cross-cuts have been
stsrted from the soath drift on the 750-ft. level
to cut and prospect the are veiu, and some good
resnlts may be looked for.
Crown Pornt.—Daily yield 500 tous of orc.
All the ore breasts an all the different levels
from the 900 down to the 1,500-ft. level are
looking well and yielding the usnal qnantity of
goad ore. The pnmp has been lowered from
the 1,500 to the 1,600-ft. level, ready to drain
the water when uecessary. The mills are all
running, althoagh thase ou the river cannot
yet work up to their full capacity for want of
the uecessary sapply of water. To remedy the
falling in the amount of ore crushed, the company have secured the-Danglss and Golden
Gate mills, with a crushing capacity of 60 tons,
both of which are now being run on ore from
the mine.
Betcuea.—Daily yield 500 tans of ore from
all the different levels from the 900 down to the
1,400-ft. level. The ore breasts on all the
levels are looking well and yieldiug finely. The
new air shaft is finished down to the 1,000-ft.
level, from which point it will be iuclined to
the 1,500 ft. level. It is operating finely, completely cooling the mine down as far as it is
finished.
Goutp & Cusay.—A large body of qnartz
has been developed by the cross-cuts in the
ledge, at the fourth station level, but no ore
that will pay the cost of extraction and reduction.
Haws & Noacross.—The main south drift on
the 2,000-tt. level hss reached the south inoline
without developing any payiug bodies or ore.
Rock Istanp.—The main west drift at the
first station level, is iu a distance of 545 ft. the
last 8 or 10 ft. being run through the hard,
tongh clay forming the east wall of the ledge.
Occrpentau.—The upraise from the level of
the lower tunnel is making good prog-ess, the
face still in ore.
Gxnxssse No, 2.—The sinking is progressing very favoraoly, with some fine quartz indications in the bottom of the shaft.
East Benoner.—Sinking the fine three-compartment shaft is progressing at the rate of 2
feet per day.
Ontcinat Goup Htuz.-The indicatious for a
good ore deposit are better and better as the
drifts advance.
Savace.—Croes-cutting and prospecting on
the 2000-[t. level is still vigorously prosecuted,
with some favorable indications.
Daxton.—-The ore breasts on both thesecoad
and third station levels are yieldiag the nsual
amount ot fine milling ore. The mill is kept
steadily running on ore from the mine.
Jurra.—The stone work for the foundation
of the new pnmpiag engine, is nearly completed. The new pump bob is being put in position. The water is now drained to the 1000-tt.
level and cross-cutting on that level will ba
resumed in a very few days.
Crotzaa-Potost.—The body of ore found in
the Belvidere section has been drifted upon
north and south, and cross-cut both east and
west, until its limits have been reached. Dsily
yield 75 tons of ore.
Battmroae Con.—A cross-cut has been started on the 450-ft. level, which will reach the ore
vein in a very short time. A cross-cut has
slso been commenced from the north drift on
the 750-ft. level, which will reach the ore vein
in five or six days. .
Yertow Jacket.—The east drift made connection with the south winze on Sunday last
giving a fine circulation of air on the 1740-ft.
Jevel. Drifts will be immediately started
north, south and east, to prospeot the ore vein.
Bouiiiox,—The main north drift from the
1700-ft. station is still following the west
wall at the ledge which is well defined, cutting
ocessionally, on the side next to the ledge, fine
bunches of quartz and stresks of ore.
Mint.—The shaft is down 340 feet, the bottom in soft sinking gronnd. Streaks nf qnartz
and low grade ore are frequently encountered,
giving great eucouragement in the prosecution
of the work. ? ;
Sutao.—The main west tnunel is still driven
ahead with all the force and energy possible,
the ground in the face is working qnite soft,
and excellent progress made.
Sutro TuNNEL.—Total length from the
month to the face of the main hoader, 7,081
feet. The ground now met with is hard, bnt
