308 MINING AND SCIENTIFIC PRESS {November 14, 1874. Mining Stocks. Stocks have been much more active this this week. The principal excitement was the nnexpscted ‘deal’ in Ophir, which enrprised outsiders by the snddenness and extent of the rise. Tbers has been qnite a strnggle to get control of this mine, and in order to secure a majority of shares hefore the election next month, the opposing parties have bid very ebarply. On the street, Wednesday noon, Ophir sold for $150—a smalllot. Con. Virginia, California and Best & Belcher have been very strong indeed. The immediate prospects are favorable to a further rise. Overman and Sog. Belcher have been comparatively dull. Thoss who claim to be wise in stocks ray that tbe rise of the year has as yet hardly heguu. In comparieon with the market one year ago, the Comstocks, with the exception of the Ophir, Con. Virginia group and Exchequer, are very low. Savage, Hale & Norcross, Yellow Jacket, Sisrra Nevada, Silver Hi] and other stocks have not shown any such advance as is usnally ths case. Baltimore Consolidated is as low a9 last summer, thongh this favorite gambling stock sells at three or four times its present price when the market is really high. The same may be said of nearly all the Cometocks, So it wonld uot be at all snrprieing if the whole line should advance largely. Outeide of Washoe etocks the market was dnll. The Idahos and Californias suffered severely. r Tbe Con. Virginia dividend, paid on the 11th inst., was a9 nsual $3 per share Belcher and Crown Point each paid $3 per share. Chariot Mill has dsclared its fourth dividend, of 40 cents per share, payable on the 16tb inst. The Beloher dividend aggregates $312,000; the Con. Virginia, $324,000; and ths Crown Point, $300,000. Tbus the totals for November show a pretty fair yield, considering that ths bnlk comes from only three mines. Concerning the wonderful developments in the Con. Virginia the Enterprise says: During the past week a considerabie number of persons have visited and examined the lower levels of the Cons. Virginia. All are astonished at tbe exceeding richness and vast extent of the ore bodies now laid bare, They come out of the mine declaring tbat the half bag never yet been told. What astouuds allis the fact that large as tbe ore bodies are, they are sill widening and expanding-—looking almost as tbough likely to prove boundless. It would he a good joke on tbe company should they he nnable to find any east wall—if they should find nothing in that direction but ‘*‘blarsted”’ silver ore, tied together with wires of gold. New Incorporations. The following companies have filed certificates of incorporation in the County Clerk’s Office, San Francisco: Ipa CLAYTON AND GREAT WESTERN Wacon Roap Co.— Oct. 5. WE hear, says the Inyo Independent, that Jones and Stewart have pnrebased the noted Panemint mine known as “Jacobe’ Wonder,” and the mill iu conrse of erection belonging to the same paites. Gur informant could not give the amount paid except that it exceeded $110,000. & he Move SUMMARY. ._ HE following is mostly condensed from jonrnals pnh lished in theinterior,if proximity to the mines mentioned. California. ALAMEDA COUNTY. Coan at Sunou.—Cor. Catifornia Reporter, Nov. 7: A party is prospecting for coal about a mile west of this station with a small force, which will be increased if indications warrant. They snnk an incline on the hill side toa depth of 90 feet, passing througb two small veins of coal, when they enconntered quite a body of watsr, which compelled them to snspend operations in that direction. They have now moved down the hill some 400 feet, and have commenced a tunnsl, which they expect will strike the main vsin, or body of coal, at a distance of 600 fest. Witbin twelve fset of the mouth of the tunnel they struck a coal ssam, 8 or 10 inches wide, which is considered a very favorable omsn. The discovery of a reliable coal mine so near the city wonld cheapsn the price of fnel very mnch, AMADOR COUNTY. Minine.—Ledger, Nov.7: Preparations are being actively made to open up a number of hydranlio claims in the vicinity of Jackson. We are pleased to learn that the quartz mines in process of development in the county are looking very promising. The Bunker Hill gaves evsry indication of a very valnable mine. The ledge is large, well-defined, and much of the rock will mill $25 to the ton. A will is being erected, and se soon as itis put in ernshing order the retnrns from Bunker Hill will be satisfactory to the owners. Ths Original Amador, at Amador City, is showing up richer rock than ever hefore discovered in that mine. Our informant says the mine never looked more promising than at present, with every appsarance of oontinning its present promising indications, The Gover, at Drytown, at the lowest depths reachsd, shows an immense vein of ore, which will pay a fair return in free gold, besides bsing heavily charged with goldbearing sulphnrets. From the depth reacbed in tbis mine, and the vast qnantity of ore laid bare, it can be safely said the Gover is no longer an experiment, bnt that it has bsen developed into a permanent paving mine. The Alpine, at Plymonth, as sinking progresses in the main shaft, shows richer rock thun at I-ss depths, and more of it. The last rock tak. n ‘out is represented as heing extra rich in free gold, and the qnantity of ore increasing, no. doubt is entertained by practical miners as to the ultimats success of tbe Alpine. The ownsrs deserve success, and the conductors of the working of the mine dessrve credit for the judgment manifested in the Jabor of development. The Oneida likewise keeps up ite chow of good paying rock, andat no time has ths mine given more satisfactory evidence of value than at present. CALAVERAS COUNTY. . Mrsine Prospects.—Chronicle, Nov. 7: An abundance of water is all that is required to keep the gravel mining interest in its present leading position, and plenty of rain has fallen to warrant that, at least during the greater portion of the year. The quartz mining interest, we can truthfully say, was never in a healthier condition. From the West Point, Mosquito and Sheep Ranch districts reports are especially pleasing. Permansnt development is steadily progressing, and tbe practical results of operations are extremely flattering, The Gwin and other well known mines thronghout the the county continne to be profitably worked, and their yield incrsases as development progresses. New enterprisss are constantly being engaged in, and exiraordinary advsncsment made in unfolding the mineral resources of the county. A Sprenprm Mine.—The gross product of the Wallace & Ferguson for the year ending October 3ist, 1874, was $61,000. That amonnt was taken out and sent to the U. 8. Mint in San Francisco. Tbe expsnse of working the mine and milling the ore ranged from $800 to $1,200 per month dnring that period. Taking $1,000 per month as the average expense, the net profit of the mine for the year was $49,000. It must be recollected that ths ledge is not worked npon an extensive scale, it being only necessary to take out rock fust enongh to supply a five-stamp mill, that boing the capacity of the bettery that has done all the crushing. EL DORADO COUNTY. Taytor Mine.—Republican, Nov. 5: W. T. Gibbs, now snperintendent of this mine, reorts the mine as looking highly satisfactory. ‘ive more stampe are to be added to the mill immediately, and are now being. turned out at the Placerville foundry. There is now ont, rsedy for ornshing, about 200 tons of rock, and the amonnt is daily increasing. INYO COUNTY. ' Panamint News.—Independent, Nov. 7: The cation or town eite, is very narrow; the widest place euitahle for hnildings is not to exceed 300 ft., and mnch of it not that wide. The monntains on either eide are very rocky and precipitone. In blasting roadsin the face of these monntains rock ia thrown clear acrose to the opposite monntain, occasionally plnmping down in the streete, which of itself has a tendency to make things lively. There is rarely a moment during the day or night when the reporia of reverberations of the ebots are not heard. Work goee on in the minee at all hours, on the roads only in the daytime.
