July 18, 1874. MINING AND SCIENTi¥IC PRESS. 37 tance of 1,400 feet, showing a continuous vein of unprecedentedly rioh ore. Goop Crman-op.—Veith & Oo., the Tannel ridge hydranlicists, have recently made another good clean-up after a shortrun. The yield of the mino was $2,000, in a very short space af time. EL DORADO COUNTY. Mistxro.—Ei Dorado Republican, July 11: Miniug operations are being diligently prosecated all about us, and although but little is said, miners generally look aad act as though everything was satisfactory. INYO COUNTY. Bourron.— Independent, July 4: Since January last 65,000 hura of bullion have been shipped on teams from Cartago. Tne teams take 400 bara every day, which is about the aumber tarned out hy the two Cerro Gordo furnaces. There are now 5,000 burs on hands. LAKE COUNTY. Quicxsr.vzeen Mines.— Bee, Jaiy 9: The Great Westeru Co. have jast completed a 30-ton furnuce, and expeot to run out from 600 to 800 flasks of quicksilver per month. Tus American mine will soon have their reduotion works fiuished, and will undouhtedly have plonty of motai to ship, as they have fine ore in large quautities. Tue Kearsarge is developing finely. They have one small retort now in operation, and intend puttiug up others soon. Tue London, Almadra und Paoifio mines, on the *‘No. 2” lode, are working a large force of men in the development of the same. LOS ANGELES COUNTY. Perno.eum.—Express, July 7: The Los Angeles Petroleum Refining Company are proceeding with energy to organize their oil works in oonneotion with the Oarreras process, and in a short time we may look to see Los Angeles illuminating oils amougthe regular com meroial articles of this market. In this connection we have nothing hut good news from the oil regiou. The prospeoting is proeeeding satisfactorily. MENDOCINO COUNTY. Quicusinver.— Independent Dispatch, July 10: We lesrn that work is beiug vigorously prosecuted on the Sodu Spriug quioksilver mine, near Anderson valley, and that late assays show A prospeot of five per cent. of quicksilver. The McGimsey lead, about one and a half miles from the Soda Spriug lead, is also reported to be good. NAPA COUNTY. Carrsrooa Irems.—Free Press, July 11: Recent explorations have developed excellent cinnabar indications in Alexander valley, on. P Suusal creek, ahout 20 miles west of this place, At least a hundred looations have already been mude. Onz of the largest yields of qnicksilver yet recorded in Napa county is that of the Calitornia compauy. On last Saturday they shipped 67 flasks of this metal from their miue, all the result of one week’s work. NEVADA COUNTY. Danrxouta Mixz.—The Dartmouth company have closed down their mill for the preaent, for want of water—the mill being run by that power. The exploratious carried on daring the last year eatisfy the company that they have a large and rich hody of blue lead, eulphur, cement gravel. A thirty-six-hour run on promiscuous gravel, not selected gravel, gave the handsome yield of $600. They intead to enlarge their preaent working shaft so as to raise the gravel by car and cage, instesd by buckets aa‘at present. The Dartmouth’s finonoial standing is first-olaas. always promptly paying all bills on the 5th day of each month, and the managemeut of mill and miue is most energeticully and efficiently done by Captaiu Miller, the Superintendent. Mritron Minryo Company.—The Milton company operates in French Corral neighhorhood, in this oounty. The Manzanito tunnel helonging to the Milton company will he 1,700 ft. in length when completed. Only about 150 ft. of the tunnel remains to he run, and that is being worked on two faces from a shaft. From the mouth of the tunnel a grade is being made for the purpose of setting the flume. This grade will be a mile or more long and will run to the Yuba river. When‘the tunnel is completed a very large body of rich gravel will be opened for profitable work, Ipano.—Grass Valley Union, July 13: The oid abaft of the Idaho mine is being repaired and re-timbered forthe purpose of putting a pump down to keep the mine free from wuter. There is not a great deal of water there now, but as the nndergrouud works hecome more extensive of course the amount hecomes greater, Seven-Tuizry Minz.—A rich strike has been made at the Seven-Thirty mine, Some of the heaviest and best rock we have ever seen was brought from the mine yesterday. The three owners are in luck, and they are the kind of men who deserve fortunes—Rohert McCook, David McCook and Elmer Sunford being the owners, New Yorx Hrux.—Work is stoadily progressing.onthis mine in both tunnels, aud good ledges are foundin hoth. Very satisfactory results have come from all the crushings of ore, all paying a handsome profit on expenses. The lower tunnel isin ahout 500 ft. The present contraot will carry the tunnel 200 ft., with a back of 350 ft. An air shaft is nearly completedin the tunnel. Rich specimens are beiug so constantly taken out that they are no longer chronicled. ; A Goop CxeaN-ur, — Nevada Transcript, July 14: We heard it stated around town that the Manzanita mine took out at its last cleanup, the nice little sum of $30,000. Such oleanups are common around the county, but we cannot alwaye obtain the figures. Posto Anxap.—The ditoh being oat by the Blue Tent Consolidated compsny, under the euperintendence of C. W. Tozer, is being pushed shead as fast as possible. The oompany are now working a huudred meu on the line of the ditoh. There will be four miles of fluming to build, and several long tuanels to run. They have one mile of flume already completed, PLACER COUNTY. Doren Frat.—Herald, July 11: Parties from Duteh Flat inform ns that the tunnel, which has been run from Bear river to tap the bottom of the deep gravei deposits near Dutch Flat, is so far advunced as to be servioeable. They have already commenced piping on a deep stratum, the tailings from whioh are washed out throagh this tunnel. From a short rua, of 100 tons of average tock, from the Orleans mine, there was oleaned up last Thursday, what is safely estimated at PLUMAS COUNTY. Sane or THe Bucxere.— National, July 4: We learn that the Buckeye olaims, at Sawpit Flat, were sold last week to a Mr. Breed, of New York, for the sum of $50,000. Conty & Gowell have stripped ahout six acres of hed-rockin their La Porte hydraulic claims this season. They are now hiring a large number of hands, and cleaniug np. 2 Tue Bluckhawkioompany (Miller, Musick & Shsffer), are making first-rate wages—from five to ten dollars per day. SISKIYOU COUNTY. Goop Yrrup.—Yreka Union, July ‘11: The Bunker Hill company on the Klamath below Happy oamp cleaned up $800, as the result of six days run. Cornish & Clurk are rnnning a tunnel to strike their ledge at a lower level. The quartz taken from this ledge has heen about the riohest of any ever foundin the connty. Some 60 or 70 tons croshed about a year ago averaged a good deal over $100 to the ton. TULARE COUNTY. Tunare.—Visalia Delia, July 9: That exaggerating reports should he set afloat in regard to the new mines is nothing more than should be expected. The report that $300,000 had been offered for the discovery clsim on the White Chief wag, of course, almost puré fabrication. There is much truth in the statement, however, that the agent of a rich mining comany is on the ground, and is willing to contraot for the claim in the sum mentioned if snbsequent developments should prove it as rich as a certain other claim owned hy the company. The report that Creighton offered $50,000 for the Lsdy Franklinis not 30. Good judges ure of the opinion that the White Chief isa large lead; but a large stream of water sinks in it, and coming out some two miles below, it would require a Isrge outlay of oapital to drain the lead below this water level. It is helieved, however, that the lead will ultimately prove one of the most valuahle discoveries of modern times, 2 TUOLUMNE COUNTY. ToouumnNe Sinver.—Independent, July 11: Jack Kuowles haa started for the Summit Silver vein with six men, determined to try its hottom. / ; Tue Knox & Boyle is paying splendidly. For the months of April and May, they shipped bullion amounting to over $10,000.' The shaft is now over 400 feet down and the rock shows first-class. : Tue Heslep mine started up on the 16th of June. They are takiug ont:rock on top now, and will commence taking out of the shaft in about a week. Everythiug is ready for the latter. The mine, worked as it ahould be, is a valnable one, and we hope those interested will give it a chance to show itself. Goop QuarTz.—P, Eastman, of Cherokee, has a veinof quartz six feet wide, which he calla the ‘‘Mother Vein,” sitnated near the Laurel mill. Twotons were tested in his arrastra from a 60 ft. incline from a 300 ft. tunnel, and panned out $25.50. We hope, as he goes down onit, it will increase in size and quality. Tue Texecrarae Mine. — Superintendent Murphy has twenty men at work in and ahout this mine. Two tunnels are being run on the hill aide. The uppertunnel, which is about 500 ft. in, has struck the vein, and they have already run 140 ft. on the chute and are getting out $25 and $30 rook; are every day expecting to strike the chute inthe lower tunnel. The ten-stamp mill whioh is being erected will be in readiuess to crush in about three weeks, when another ten-stamps will be added. Tulloch’s self-feeders will be employed in the mill. : Tounrocn’s SenrFrrpers.— Union Democrat, July 11: The proprietors of the Spring Gulch mine recently placed two of these ‘‘feeders’’ in their mill, They report them as being all tbat is claimed hy the iuventor, saving the labor of aman and keepiug the battery evenly fed, with great saving in the wearof shoes. Mr. Whitto Informs us 1t is one of the best, simplest and most practical improvements he has seen introduced to facilitate the crushing of ore, during his experience of many years. The same is said of them by Judge Preston, who runs them in the various mines under his control. TRINITY COUNTY. { Invian Curzz Quartz.—Journal, July 11: Further developments on the Bullychoop ledge are of an encouraging character. The vein is from two to four feet in width and well defined.
Aa assay from everage rook shows $241.17 gold to the ton. Itistheiatention of the locators to prospect the ledge extensively. Nevada. WASHOE DISTRICT. Coxsotrpaten Vrrormta.--Gold Hill Nezws, July 9: Daily yield 300 tons of ore. The ore hreasts on the 1,30U-foot levels are both lookjog well and ylelding splendidly. The bottom ofthe winze from the 1,300 to oonnect with the 1,400-ft level is etiliiu rich ore. Three drifts are being extended on the 1,100-ft level for the development of the ore hody—one north, one south and another east, ali of which are in rich ore, with no indication whatover of aohange. The north winze from the 1,400-ft levei is sinking through high grede ore. The grading and other meoessary proparations forthe erection of u new 60-stamp mill, is making rapid progress. Hare & Noroross.—Binkiag the main incline below the 2,000-ft level goes steadily on. A iarge water-tsnk for the pump is heing ereoted 50 feet below the 2,000-ft station. Both the main north and west drifts are being driveu vigorously ahead, with favorable prospects of ore developments. The ore found in the west drift on this level last week, although of excellent qnality, proved to ‘be only two or three feet in thiekness, but may yet lead to the development of a large and extensive hody. Opurr.—The suit in the Distriot Court for the settlement of the dispute in regard to the control of this miue has ree postponed until the 18th. In the meantime work has again heen resumed in the miue under the controi of the present superintendent, Samuel T, Curtis. This is highly gratifying, as, hsd the mine remained shut down three days more, the Empire State mill, which was being run on the reserve ore iu the dumps, would also have been ohliged to stop. Tbe extraction of ore from the ore breasts on-hoth the 1,300 and 1,465-foot levels has been resumed. Sinking the winze from the 1,465-foot level, to eonneot with the up-raise from the 1,700-foot, has been stopped on acconnt of the intense heat. ’ Goutp & Curuy.—The face of the north drift on the 1,500-ft. level is in low grade quartz, aud shows a slight ‘improvenient since our last report. Sinkiug the double winze helow the 1,000ft. station is making good headway, with some good indications in the hottom. The east drift, spoken of in our last report as just having beeu commenoed, was’ run in a distauce of 8 ft., when it was discontinned on acconnt of nndoubted indicstions of the close proximity of a heavy hody of water. Gout ConsoLtparep.—The ore hody in the north drift from the head of the incline has widened out to 15 and 16 ft. in width, and is of an excellent quality. The winze from this drift is down 69 ft., also in ore of a fiue quality. The pay streak in the hottom of this winze is about 5 ft. in width, the grain of the quartz coarse, and has a very promigiug look. The grading for the erection of the new 20-stamp mill has been oommenced, and is being pushed with all the vigor possihle. Daily yield, 20 tons of ore. ‘ Srenna Neyapa.—The erection of the new hoisting and pumping machinery is making steady and very favorable progress, The hydranlie worka are doiug good execttion, and continue to work spleudidly. Many pieces of ore extremely rich in gold are found, and it is the opinion of many that a rich chimney will yet be found somewhere in the vioinity. Daily yield, 60 tons of ore, keeping the mill steadily running. The ore hreasts are all looking well and yialang finely. Yewtow JacKket.—The work of cross-cutting on the 1,540-ft. level is heing prosecuted vigorously. The winze which is being sunk from this level, has attaiued a depth of 120 ft. The oompany have commenced sinking a sump below the 1,740-ft. level statlon. As soon.as this sump is finished, prospecting that level will be commenced. : : Bexcuer.—Daily yield, 550 tons of ore. Th ore hreasts throughout the entire mine are looking well and yielding splendidly. Sinking the main incline is making fair progress, notwithstanding the extreme hardness of the rock. It is now down 20 feet helow the 1,500-ft. level. The works are to be ahut down for a day or two, to change some of the hoisting gear, aud put in new rails in the main imoline shaft. A spleudid new cable rope is now on its way from San Francisco, and will be pnt in as soon as it arrives. Crown Pornt.—Daily yield, 550 tons of ore, which is heing extracted from the 1,000, 1,200, 1,300 and 1,400-ft. levels. Since our last report, another wiuze, called the south winze, has been started from the 1,400-ft. level, and is now down 14 feet in good ore, The various ore hreasts throughout the mine are looking as well as nsual. CuorzsB-Potosi1.—Daily yield, 90 tons of ore, the assay value of which is $30 per ton. The cross-cats, No. 1 and No. 2, at the fourth station level, have both reached the west country rock without developing anything of material value. ee Savaoz.-—Sinking the main shaft for the 2,100-ft. level is makiug steady progress, the rock in the hottom blasting out finely. The main south drift on the 2,000 ft. level has been enlarged and timhered up in good working condition, and is now being steadily driven ahead to connect with the north drift on the same level from the Hale & Norcross. Goopman.—This mine is situated about a mile west of Silver City, near the Red Jacket mine and the Amerioan Flat tunnel of the railroad. The company have sunk a shaft about 160 feet, developing a good-sized ledge, which assays well in silver and gold. The Goodman company have a valaable piece of mining property, whieh only lacks fuli and proper development. Junia.—Work on the 900-ft. ievel has beeu discontinued for u short time, pendiag the eréotion of the new pamping machinery. The excavatiou for the machinery is neariy oompleted. Batrovore ConsoutpaTtep.—The water has been drained from the shaft and the sinking resumed, whioh is now making fsvorable headwsy. The new machinery is ali working with the utmost perfection, and the development of the new level is being looked forward to with intense and hopeful expectation. Inperia.-Emrree.—Sinkiog the maininoline is makiog fair progress, and has only 8 ft. more to sink, when everything will he in readiness to open the 2,000-ft. station. The south drift, from the main east crossout, has penetrated the ore body, mentioned in our iast report, 40 ft. showiug it to be $30 to $35 ore, and giving fair promise of the development of a large body. Uran.—The flow of water has oontinued stronger in the shaft than wae at first suspeoted. However, the steady and persistent efforts of the management are beginning to tell, and the water is slowly and gradually being drained. Justio£.—Sinking the main inoline is making good progress. The extraction of ore from the Waller Defeat shaft is oontinued ut the rate of 40 tons per day. The exroavations for the foundation of the new hoisting works and maohinery is making steady and favorahle progress. Caneponra.—Sinking the main shaft is makiug favorable progress. Itis now down 36 ft. helow the 800-ft. level. Leo. — The ledge is becoming somewhat softer again in the face of the tunnel, and a hetter quality of qnartz is met with. The ledge is hearing mor@ nearly a north and south course than at any time heretofore, and the iudioations are more favorahle at present than they have been for some time past. Pun. Saerman.—New shaft down 97 ft. today. The reqnisite steam hoisting machinery will be put in position the last of this month. No water interferes with sinking. Darton.--Cutting out and enlarging the ‘shaft for a thiid compartment is nearly completed to the level of the drain tunnel. Preparation for the ereotion of the new machinery goes steadily on. Tyizr.—The main east drift has out a fine vein of quartz, 2 or 3 feet in thiokuess, which carries hoth gold and silver in very promising quantities. This streak is now being fully prospected, as the ohanoes are excellent for its lesding to a permanent and paying body. Ovensan.—-There is no change, if we except the progress made on the north drift on the 1,200-ft. level. Succor.—The erection of the new hoisting works is making good headway. One of the hoisting engines will he in readiness to start up again in a very few days. Daney.—-The main west drift on the 400-foot level is in 149 feet from the shaft, the face in hard hlasting rock. Srzves Hirn.—The oross-cut from the south drift, on the first level, is still in ore. The face of the main south drift on the second ’station level is still iu white qnartz and low grade ore. Nevapa.—Still running ahead in the new tnnnel, with good progress, in excellent working gronnd. This tunnel will soon be into the ledge itself, and follow it until it reaches the old workings, which are in good pay ore 100 feet above. Bucxexe.—The south drift at the first station is rapidly approachiug the south winze. As soon as the connection is completed hetween thia drift and the winze, it is the intention to commence the extraction of ore from that level. Lapy Bera Sake the new shaft is making good headway. There is no water to interfere. Auamo.—Sinking the new shaft on the body of ore, struck a few days since, is making good progress, with every indication of its developing into a fine and extensive body. OcormentsL:—Sinking the winze from the tunnel level is making good progress, the hottom still in fine ore. The new hoisting machinery is working to perfection. KwIGKERBOCKER.—The water has been drained from the shaft and the sinking resumed. Woopvitie.—Siuking the prospecting winze below the 300-ft. level is making fair progress. New Yonr«.—Sinking the shaft has been again resumed, and is making favorable progress. Driving the east drift at the 600-ft. level has heen commenced. Frozma.—The shaft is down 145 feet. The machiuery worka well. CarrForn1a.—Driving hoth the north drifts, on the 1,400 and 1,500-ft. levels is makiug good headway. : DARpANVLLES.—The new ehaft is down 45 feet, the bottom in hard blasting ground. ‘ Buuiion.—The north drift ou the 1,700-ft. level is making favorable progress. J Muvr.—Sinkiug the main shaft is making the usual good progress. Surro.—Driving the main west tunnel is still making rapid progress. Kos:uTH.—The erection of the new hoisting and pumpiug machiuery is making good proTOSS, 2 Picrou.—Tunnel driving ahead. Rock in face somewhat harder. No water.
