the metal.
Da. Baxen’s Quicxstpver Mrve.—ln this
mine, near Lower Lake, some very rich ore
was struck last Monday. They also discovered
a cave, which was sn full nf gas that the men
conld not stand it, and work hsd to be suspended.
MARIPOSA COUNTYFrom Manrrosa Carex.—Cor, Gazefle, Aug 1:
The Italian mine (a 3-ft. vein) turns out $8
jerton. A small vein on tnp of the hill, near
nll Run, paid $12 per ton, and 10 tons taken
from a ledgo in Ben. Wills’ field tnrned ont one
nonce to the tnn.
On the otherslde of Mr. Wills’ honse is anothor ledge abont the same sizo and character
nf the above. These twn ledges, In addition to
pure gold, contain a fair porcentage of rich sulphurets. The Blue Lead, near Mr. Morrison’s
ranch, varles from a few inches to 7 ft. in
width, and has been opened abont 1,500 ft. in
length, and st various depths; the deepest
shaft is abont 70 ft. This mine has yielded
nver $30,000 tn the Incky owners, most of
which has been ponnded ont with a hand
mortar, at very small expenso, The Doss mine,
whloh belongs to Mr. Brooks, is down 110 ft.,
and shows & vein all the way down, varying but
little from 10 ft. in thickness, about all of which
has boen worked ay pay-rock. Two hundred
tons nf this, crushed by Mr, McCultongh, turned
nnt $17 per ton; 400 crashed about two years
since ylelded $10 and $11 per ton in free gold
besides 15 per cent. sniphnrets, worth $24 per
ton.

Quicrstnver.—Hollister Enterprise, Aug, 1:
Twenty fiaske of qnickeilver were shipped to
San Francisco on the 27th, from the Cerro Benitn mlnee, These mines are opening up splendidly, and shipments would have been much
greater, recently, had it not been for an aosident to the furnace, by which work in that department was temporarily suspended.

Reprvoron Quicgstrvea.—Reporter, Aug. 1:
Last month's rnn amonnted to 900 flasks. Thie
was the produotion of two fnrnacee only, the
old furnace being in conree of demolition to
make room for two othere that are to be erected,
and for which 400,000 bricks are already prepared and on thegronnd. Only 125 men were
employed during the month.
NEVADA COUNTY.
~ Grass Valley Union, Ang. 1: The run of the
Idaho mill for the past fonr weeks has prodnced gold to the valne of about $45,000,
which ineuree a dividend next Tuesday. The
undergronnd appearance of the mine continnes
good. The 800-ft. level has been etarted, and
__the shaft is also sinking forthe 900-ft. level
The Empire has had a eucceeaful and profitable
month’s run, The olean-up for the past four
weeks will realize something like $13,000) The
New York Hill mine continues to show splendid ore in the tunnel. The ledge is now four
feet thick in the breast and is certainly rioh.
“the Seven-Thirty mine had a little crushing
made the other day. Eight loads were put
throngh the mill and gold valued at $1,168
was taken out—which is $146 to each load of
qnartz7 The Magenta ie making 8 good showing. The shaft is down 300 ft., and there are
three levels run from it. A chnte from the
3d to the 2d level has been ran, which gives
good ventilation to the mine. The ledge ie
from eiz to fifteen inches in thickness, and has
no breaks in it, The ore showe well in galena,
heavy eulphurets and free gold. The Slate
yodee mine (Perrin's) ie doing well. The
shaft is down 625 ft. on the incline, the ledge
being very flat. The ledge ie over 3 ft. in
thickneee in the present workings, and shows
plenty of snlphurets, andsome free gold. The
edge matter ie all worked, and, withoutany assortment of the rock, will mill at leset $10 per
ton. Allie worked, eince the milling is done
by water power. Last week a cave occurred in
the mine, whioh required six days for repaire.
The cave, however, disclosed that there ie another ledge above the one now being worked,
and that the npper ledge ia rich in gold and
gold-bearing sniphurets. The Omsha mine
Oontinuee to chow well. Tho ehaft ie down 90
ft. on the incline, and the north drift has been
run about 60 ft., and the drift to the south is in
about 40 ft.. The rock in both drifte is good,
and thatin the north shows well in free gold,
Reees, of Reese & OCo., has frequently
struck rich pockets in his ledge. One day
this week hemade an extraordinary strike at
the depth of 80 ft. Ont of 57 ounces of decomposed qnartz, melted gold to the amount
of 46 onnces were obtained. Tho Alaska mine
je situated on Ben. Franklin hill, The ehaft
ie down 60 ft., and yery excellent rock is being
taken aut. In the connty generally, mining
hae been very active dnring the eummer eo far,
the gravel miners having a good supply of
water. The North Bloomfield company will,
by the first of October, have their tunnel compieted, and will then be able to commence
washing off their immense body of pay dirt.
They have lately, acquired, by purchaee, eeventy-five acree of mining ground in the vicinity of French Corral. The Milton company
are working their mines euccessfully, and are
operating their twater ditchee so as to make
them pay. At North San Juan there ie much

life and prosperity. At Moore’s Fist, differences between the miners and ditch owners,
as to the price of water, atill exist, and the
miners are waiting anxiously for the Milton

edge of rich ore is reported in the west stope
had face of the wost drift of the 240-foot level.
In the 150-foot oast drift anew chute of ore 1s
coming in, the ledge being 30inchesthick. On
the 240-foot level a cross cnt is being driven

now taking out very good gravel, paying a little over four dollars to the car-load, of about
1,600 ponnde. They crush, with an 8-stam
mill, 1,000 car-loads in abont fifteen days, an
as the whele cost for labor and milling ts only
abeut one dollar per car-load, it leaves a very
handsome profit for the owners. The gravel
is getting richer, and very rich retnrns may be
anticipsted before the wster sesson closes,

Norra Fork anv Viorntty.— National, Aug. 1:
The North Fork Ditch and Mining Co. intend
making an ontlsy exceeding $200,000; are now
engaged in constructing a ditch which will cover
the whole gronnd. The ditch will commence
at the North Fork of Feather river, about 23
miles distant from the ground intended to be
worked, and is intended to carry 1,500 inohes
of water, There will be over 8 miles of iron
pipiug on the line of ditch, 22 inches in diameter, which wiil cost, inoluding the laying,
$125,000. A contract hae been let to a oompany of Chinamen to make about 2 miles of
the ditch; the remainder will be made by the
oompany, who in a few daye will have 400
Chinamen at work. They intend having the
ditch completed and the water on the ground
by first Deo. next. The Providence Hill Co.
have their reservoir completed; aleo two ditches
leading water from the reservoir to tho hill,
oapable of carrying 1,000 inchee of water each,
and have the mine fitted up with three monitore and all the late appliances for working a
hydraulio mine. The:Sunnyeide Co. have
struck graved in their tunnel, and at last acoonnte were making fair wages, They are finding very heavy gold—piecee weighing 3 ounces.
Messre. Rupe & Stevene are making $5. per
Kirkham é& Co. are busy
putting in their wing-dam, and intend having
it completed and the claim dry by Augnst Ist.
Shin & Co. have suspended operations on their
tunnel for the. present. Stump & Co. will
soon euspend operations on account of a soar~
city of water. They have had a good run this
season, making abont $4 per day to the man,
y Another enterprise in thie vionity, is being
undertaken by a San Francisco company, who
propose taking a ditoh from the North Fork of
Feather river above Independence bar, which
‘will carry 3,000 inches of water, and eventuall:
extending it down the river a distance of eix
miles, for the purpose of working nnmerone
pointe, benohes and deposits of gravel along
the banks of the river. orse Shoe Pnint, the
firet ground intended to be worked, is about
344 miles distant from the head of the ditch.
It ie a large deposit of gravel, covering about
10 acree, with a dump of 70 nr 80 feet on every
side; has been worked with profit for yeare in
@ primitive way with a small head of water.
Anogntine Hypaavric Minge.—The Argentine
mine, owned by Messrs, Heath & Jndson, is sitnated in the heart of a district through which
rup innumerable stringere and ledgesof quartz,
all carrying more or less gold. The bedrock is
talcoee slate, carrying gold-bearing sulphurets
which assay from $50 to $500 to the ton, while
to crush the whole indiscriminately will pay
from $5 to $20, A great portion of the quartz
is decomposed, from which the gold readily
frees itself upon being waehed, and it was this
tact ‘which induced the company to fit np hydraulio diggings. Their flume at the head is
1,200 feet long, dumping into aeteep cation;
thence the tailings rum over a rough groundeluice 700 ft., when tbey are picked up by a
flume and rnn through an underourrent, after
which they resume their travels, only to be
canght up again by another nndercurrent.
Thie operation is repeated four timee after
leaving the main flume, and the tailinge finally
dropped into Greenhorn gulch, about one mile
‘from their starting point. From the fourth
nndercurrent Mr. Heath cleaned up thirty
ounces a short time siuce, and judging from
that the final clean-up will be a good one even
thie year. >
SANTA CRUZ COUNTY.
Aonose rHE Bay.—Cor. Enlerprise, Aug. 1:
The coal minee, which were productive of go
much excitement a few monthe ago, have
not tarned out so well as was: anticipated,
They have demonetrated beyond a doubt that
coal of a good qnality exists in the Santa Lucia
range; but, as‘ yet, it has not been found in
any considerable qnantity. Two promising
cinnabar lodes have been discovered. One of
these, known as the Gnadalupe mine, ie situated about 12 miles sonth of here, near the
rancho Los Laurelee. Ore taken from this
mine resembles very much that taken from
New Almaden, though, of course, it ie not so
surfsce, The other lode is situated sbont 25
miles sonth of thie place, snd was discovered
afow days sgo by Oaptain A. Smith. These
discoveries verify the npinion expressed by
Prof. Whitney, thst ‘there is a probabillty of
oinnabar or qnicksilver being discovered in the
hills back of Monterey.”

furnaces for redncing quicksilver are being
erected at Borsx Iske. The capacity of these
two furnaces is forty tons a day and will yield,
it is expected, forty flasks of quicksilver.
Tuma Mryx.—An excellent prospect hss
been struck in the tunnel in which work is being done at the Eliza mine. The indications
are better now for a large body of rioh rock
than ever before since the claim has been
worked,
Scanys.—Fair Play diggings have paid $6,000
per month thie season, working two littlo giants; bank 200 feet high; blasting necessary;
about five rhonth’s run this year. Cleveland
company also using two little giants, which
have paid well this seaeon. McChessney & Co.
have turned out a respectable amount of the
yellow etuff while water lasted.
Grapino.—The Green mountain oompany, at
the head of Mt. Vernon ravine, are busy with
a large foroe of men grading a ditch from Rook
creek to their claims.
Porr Wie.—The dissensions between the
shareholders of most of the claims at this locality have seriously interfered with the proper working of their mines. The dirt averagee
$2 per osr-load, the poorest ‘yielding eeventyfive oente. The ground is soft bed-rook and
gravel, rendering blaeting unnecessary.

Laron Bowipers.—Chapman & Fisher have
a large array of boulders to contend with in
their olaim opposite the old Arkansas dam.
Some of them are 18 or 70 feet long, with a
corresponding breadth and thiokneee. One
kept the blastere busy for five days before it
was finally disposed of. Giant powder ie ueed
exteneively aa is found to work to excellent
advantage,
Goon Prosrscrs.--We saw a few pans ‘of
earch washed in the claim of Fisher & Prater,
opposite the Arkansas dam, while in that eection last week. The prospeots were taken
from the baok of the oluim, and were good
enough to make ne want to drop the quill and
startin on the bed-rock again. They havea
good ehow ahead of them for another year.

Work IN roe Mines.—Times, Aug. 1: Quite
a number of companies are engaged in making
tunnels in the Mineral King mines. Some are
now completed for 40 or 50 ft. Severalloade
that contain rich epecimene have been discovered recently, and among others is the Crystal,
containing ore which aseaye over $100 to the
ton. We learn that Mr. Oreighton hae pnrchased the first extension south on the Lady

Rock lezann.—Gold Hill News, July 30:
This mine wae lecated in 1860. 1t is situated
in Gold Hill Mining Dietrict, juet south of the
Baltimore and American Flat mines. In 1863-4
a tunnel wae run some 600 or 700 ft. into the
mountain, outting the ledge, which at that
point ie about 80 it. in width. In 1864 operations were diecoutinued and not reeumed
again until January of this year. Since’ that
time work has been prosecuted constantly. A
three-compartment ehaft has been eunk to a

near the bottnm of the shaft, but not enough
to impede nperations, The face of the west
drift, from the 200-ft. ststion, isin good working gronnd, no water coming In. The prospects of this mino are favorable, as the tunnel

hoisting machinery, the usual quantity of ore
has not been extracted dnring the week. The
new hoisting maohinery was given a test trial
on Monday laet, and moved off with most perfect clock-like perfection. This hoisting machinery is of size and power that perfectly
eclipses anything of the kind erlcted on the
Comstock lode.
BexcHer.—The prospecting drifts throughout the entire mine have been suspended for a
