Prcan.—Several of onr cotemporariece are discussing the snhject of planting trees, ond with ell of them the nut beariug trees seem to be most infavor. The nut bearivg tree furnishes on article of food always, and the wood of ony nut bearer is valuable ae timber. Not one of the nut bearing trees has wood which is not usefnl, But we have seen no mention mede ‘ofthe p-can tree. The nuteare sold in every ‘candy or variety etore in the State, and the nut populer everywhere. The tree ie one of the finest shade treee that growe. It will grow on any alluvial lend. Ae timber the pecanis next to the hickory in strevgih and far superior to the hickory in lightness. The wood of the pecan tree makes finer pick handles, axe handlee, whipetocke and all that eort of thing than any other tree, In planting, the pecen nnte chonld be obtained from the western part of Texas. There, the fruit of the tree ie munch larger than any grown along the banksof the ‘Missiceippi bottoms. The Texas variety of the nut reproduces itself, alwaye giving a large, eweet nut. Very seldomie the Texas pecan Geen in Our markets here. The pecan tree is worth the attention of all who own land in thie State.—G@rass Valley Union. eee. _ SocraRte Prants.—In a etate of nature, certain plante are always found growing singly, while others are ae invariably found growing in groups. It ie thence inferrcd that the former are influenced by come myeterious antipathy against, and the latter hy an equally Strong eympathy for each other. ‘Take the caseof the common service tree, Sorbus domestica, under cultivation. This cannot be well grown, if planted by itself, as the plants invariably grow Tickety, aud alwaye become covered with galle end canker; while, if they are planted awong apple trees, ete., in the same svil, and uuder cisely the same conditione, lhey thrive to perfection. If eeede of the service tree are sown by themselves, the seedlings are always ‘poor aud micereble; whereae, if the eced is : ed with pear eced, the service eeedjings come up Vigorouely, and often make stronger plants than the pear seedlings.— Af. With the opening of the Bank of California and the opening of the Nevada bank, it wae naturally expected that such an impetus to financial affairs would have an encouragirg effect upon the stock market. The opening of the Stock Boards on Tuesday showed that the this expectation was not unfounded. Stocks opened strong and evidences were apparent that arise along the whole line mightbe looked for. The following day, however, a reaction set in and now the market is pretty thoroughly demoralized, and at the present writing there is no saying when there will be any improve. ment, The difference in the prices of the openiug eession for Tueeday and those of the following day may be seen by reference to our stock table. .
