Fruits, Flowers and Rustic Work.
We are pleased to observo that countinual
adilitions are being made to the fruit andl flower
departments of onr highly praiseworthy anil
good-cffecting Mechanics’ exhibition, R. B.
Woodward displays in a glass case four interesting specimens of tho inseetivorons nrpenthes
or Pitcher plant, viz: Darlingtonia Calisornica,
N. Sarraceniana, N. disillatoria, and WN.
pillacea, About twenty species of these remarkable aml attractive plauts are known, by
far the greater part of which are natives of
Bornco, Suinatra, and tho adjacent islands of
the Indian Archipelago, The oddity of the
fuliaceous organs in thia genus, with their eurious terminal, pitcher-liko appendayes has attracted great attention ainong botanists. The
size and shape of tho pitcbera vary much in tho
ditferent kinds. no sort has the blade of tho
leaf cighteen inches long hy seveu or oight
broad, and tho piteher twelve inches long by
six in diameter, of a broad ampulla furin, with
two fringed wings in front.
_The two tables of cut flowers, ono from Miller,
Sievers & Co's oxotic garden, near Woolward’s
Gardens, and the other from Thos, Say well’s
conservatory, Lombard strect, entbellish and enliven tho horticultural department eatly, with
the heautiful and gorgeous blooms of yladioluses,
dahlias, fuchias, roses, etc., and other rare and
lovely planta of mauy varieties on several stands,
And what intinite profusion, and what marvellous variety of forms and colors, habit, lowers,
leaves! What human imaginatiou, so fertilo,
so Capricions, as it may he supposed, would havo
dreained these thousand shapes of leaves, theso
continual contrasts of aspect and shades of
color, the inimitable olegauco or the namcless
oddity, prodigies of Naturo, which science
shows to us, are subjected, even in their most
oo variation, to simplo and immutable
Jaws,
Ou the entrance platform is shown a very extensive collection of bandsome and very ingenious rustic work, hy T. Dutfy, corner O'Farrell
and Leavenworth strects, Here are beautiful
jardinicres of all sizes, shapes and prices.
‘Tableg, chairs, sofas, lounges; hanging corner
and side baskets, and overy varicty of rustic
and root works; vases, fountains, whatnots, and
all other styles of this free and elegant mode of
working up the natural wood of many colors,
graining aud variety of shapes. All this mistic
work is mounteil on castors; can he moved with
ease, and are water tight, and cau he watered
in the hall entrance or parlor witbout soiling
anything, Conservatories, gardens, summer
houses, and hay windows can he thus furnished
with all these and many other kinds of ornamental rustic works, and fern cascs of any size,
Especially is it appropriate for a real rustic
house or cottage to have rustic ornaments, even
at the threshold; but this ornamentation is appropriate, in some parts of evcry villa residence,
From Garey’s semi-tropical nurscries both
fruit and trees of the famous Garey’s Mediterranean sweetvorange are shown at tbe stand of
el we sceilsman and florist, Sansome
strect. Somef this fruit is preserved in bottles of alcohol, and is ‘very fine and large.
Here also may be seen several sorts of the
highly valued and lately introduced fruit of tbe
Japanese persimmon ( Diospyrus Kaki).
Tho Journal of Commerce makes a, most extensive and miscellaneous display of the productions of the whole Pacific coast, but especially
of California, Hereis an example of the vast
possibilities of this coast and State, and the
belict will sugyest itself to the visitor that all
tho wonders of our prolific land have not by a
great deal heen yet revealed Mostof the apecimens of fruits and vegetahles are very large
and handsome—the frutts especially are very
heautifully colored. Some mountain peaches
from Mr. Perry, near Murphy's, Calaveras
county, struck us very forcihly, from their great
size, brilliant coloring and remarkahle juiciness,
exceeding in this respect our Sacramento peaches,
although we cannot say that their flavor to our
palate, was much better than the lowland fruit
of that kind. There were four kinds of them,
two being George the Fourth and Honest Jobn.
Their delightful aroma attacted particularly our
notice. Dr. Stivers was again on hand with
his specimens of the many beautiful woods of
the whole Pacific slope.—H. J. Hooper in Fair

DemouisHEn.—The work of demolishing the
old Jackson furnaces is proceeding rapidly, one
of them having been already taken down, and
the other will probahly he raised to the foundations tbis evening. The intersects of the stones
‘comprising the furnaces are filled with lead,
and every open space in the walls permeated
with the bullion. On the rocks taken from the
furnace, depositions of pure arsenic are also
found in considerable quantities. There is no
doubt but that the company will be rewarded
witb a large amount of hase bullion, as the
nantity in sight is very large, and when the
oundations are reached, a deposit that has
leaked through the hottom of the furnace will
he met with. In the first attempts at smelting
in Eureka, patent bottoms were unknown, and
a large quantity of the base and precious metals
were lost through the imperfect construction of
the furnaces. The Jackson company contemplate the erection of a first-classfnrnaco in every
particular, but it is probablo that they will
alsiulon the old site, the dump room for slag
leing insufficient. It is the intention of the
company, providing they can secnre control of
the proper amount of water needed, to build on
Ruby Hill, in close proximity to the mine.
Much of the material in the old furnace can he
utilized in luilding the new one, aud it is ealculated that the vost of transporting ores from the
mine to the furnace will be saved, making quite a
differenvo in the cconomical reduction of the
ores. Vhe Jackson will soan be adding its
uota to tho bullion produet of the district. —
