The Mining Share Market.
There have heen no startling events in connection with developmeuts of the mines this
week, so that the stock market has run along
smoothly and evenly. Still it lacks animation,
as it has for many months past, and some persons are of the opinion that stock speculation
will never be what they used to he. The market mnst depend more than ever on actual ore
developments. Wild-cat and unproductive
mines are at a discount, and people will not invest in the stocks of mines in which there is a
suspicion of johhery or speculation. The time
has gone by when the mere listing of a stock in
the Board insured its sale. People are too
short of money to put it exclusively with anythiug that comes along. They buy stocks more
for an investment than they used to, and are
not hy any means so reckless as they were a
year ago. This is really an encouraging featuro
rather than otherwise, <A spirit of mere speculation is to be deplored; hut when men mean to
legitimately go into mining as a business, there
is an opportunity for them to realize handsomely
on their investment, with as little risk as on
other branches of husiness, provided, always,
that ordinary care is exercised in the matter.
The purification of managements, hy investigations when anything wrong is suspected, isa
good thing, and will be of great henefit. We
have had considerahle of this of late, all of
which has resulted favorahly for all mining interests,
Our Gain in PopuLation.—The Call has
carefully analyzed and combined the reports of
the different transportation companies for the
first six months of 1877, and shown our gain in
population by immigration. We quote: ‘The
white immigration for 1876, by rail aud sea,
numbered 43, 758, as against 15,481 Mongolians;
in the first six months of 1877, 21, 760 white and
6,556 Chinese. The immigration by the two
great routes—sea and railroad—then amounted,
in 1876, to 59,239 of hoth races, and to 28, 316
. for the past half year. In those eighteen months,
. 65,518 whites and 22,037 Chinese arrived, or a
grand total of 87,555 sontls.
