February 15, 1879.] MINING AND SCIENTIFIC PRESS. 101 120 Silver Hl.. 100 Favorite.. Nev: 48) 200 Mint.. 2000 Monument 1) 100 Wales.. 45 Yellow Jacket.. Mining Share Market. The past week has becu more exciting and active than auy for eome time heretofore. The expected, upward tendeucy noted in our last issue, has been partially realized ; a eharp advance all along the line of the Cometocks having been experienced. The amicable eettlement between the Comstock compauiee and the Satro Tunnel company, inaugurated this move for the better, and though no important ore bodies have been struck, the new lease of life, which this arrangement gives to the minee, the utility ef the tunnel as a meane of drainage and better veutilation, and the certainty that in conjunction with it, new deep exploratione can be made in entirely virgin ground, eufficed to croate the strong upward impetus above noticed. ’ Even the upward movement in Yellow Jacket last weck gave way to the interest elsewhere awakened along the Comstock. The principal movement on the north wae in Ophir and Mexican, Among the water stocke, Savage and Hale & Norcroes were the center of interest. Later, the leading etocks of Bodie and other outside districts became active, showing that more intereet is being taken in them as the spring advances. The latter part of the week ehowed less confidence and pricee were lower. Outsiders did not appear to appreciate the services rendered them hy manipulators in advancing ‘‘securities’ to a higher standard, refusing to be accomodated even at previous prices, At the cloee of the week, pricee eomewhat recovered, and after a eteady etand, are again somewhat on the increase. No eharp rally is looked for, but more confidence is expressed in the general gradual riee, than would have been in case of a eudden spurt. In passing its February dividend, California has caueed eome dieappointment, it having been generally supposed that the now reduced rates could have been kept up eomewhat longer. Thie extinguiehee the last of the dividend-paying mines on the Cometock—takee away its ‘“‘neet-egg,” as it were. Meantime the Bodie, Eureka and other dividend-paying mines continue to dieburee their ueual amount of net earnings, and the productive minee everywhere to ehip, their naual complement of bullion, indicating an active and healthful condition of thie indu&try. d Throughort the California mines, more escially in the bydraulic washings, great activity ie noticeable eince the advent of the recent heavy raind, whereby the reservoire bave been filled and the ditches eupplied to overflowing. The year now promisee to be a moderately good one witb every class of placer mines, Bullion Shipments. Since our last iseue, we have noticed the following bullion sbipments: Highbridge, Feb. 7th, $10,027.35; California, Feb. 5th, $129,817.88; Bodie, Feb. 7th, $9,400; Hilleide, Feb. 5th, $5,370; Hillside, Feh. 9th, $5,200; Standard, Feb, 6th, $19,917.38; Northern Belle, Feb. 6th, $3,972.35, Alexander, Feb. 11th, $3,693.64; Tybo Con., Feb. 7th, $4,407.60; Leopard, Feb. 9th, $6,800; Independence; Feb, 10th, $4,000; Grand Prize, Feb, 10th, $12,500; Hilleide, Feb. 11th, $5,150; Indian Queen, Feb. 3d, $3,780.45; Northern Belle, Feb. 8th, $6,076.47, MeErEoRoLoey.—Our knowledge concerning rainfall at different pointe on the Pacific coast is being constantly added to, and the etudy is generally associated with some intereeting condition of phyeical geography, or physical ecience, having a general and a wider bearing. Investigatione of thie sort are certainly practical enough ; though there is often at first glance, as in other departments of science, little hut abetract ecience to be seen on the eurface. Mr. Purnell concludes his eeries of articlee ou “Coemic Meteorology” in this iesue. The original obeervations of Dr. Blake, Prof. Le Conte and eeveral others, beforo the Academy of Sciencee, and ite eections, are to the point. Tue vote of Texas hae increased 50,000 in two yeare, which indicatee an increase of population in that time-of hetween 300,000 and 400,000, Pg Minina SUMMaRY. The folluwiog le mostly condensed from journals pubshed In the interior, ia proximity to the mines mentlened. CALIFORNIA. AMADOR. Minino Nores.—Ledyer, Feb, 8: Iu the 230 and 270 levels of the Bunker miue the rock con35e j tinuee as good ae ever, A steam pump has been put into the 270 level to throw the water up to the 70-foot drain tunucl. Another body of ore has been fouud in the 330 level, which it ie expected will turn out well. In the bottom level, 450 fect, the ledge bes been fouud eix feet in thickness and gradually getting larger. The mill is kept running all the time and pays woll. The Con, Ainador made a mouthly cleauup Suuday. Only one-half the milling capacity, or 20 stamps, was kept in operation. The yicld was in tbe neighborhood of $10,000—a great shrinkage from the output of gold in its prietinc days, The old worke arc closed, with little prospect of their ever becoming the eccne of activity again. It doce not follow, however, that the miue is exhaueted. The mill is kept runniug to its full capacity on rock from the Wolverine tunnel and Badger shaft. At the Talisman mine, near Amador City, thinge are looking more hopeful than for many monthe past. In drifting north, towards the Koystite, a body of quartz of fair quality has been etruck, The mill hae been operating on this rock for a couple of weeke, Watcr was turned into the More diteb Tuesday, and the new 10-stamp mill was etarted Thureday. All the works conuected with thie mine are of the most eubstantial character. CALAVERAS. Urrer Country Mintye Jors.—Chronicle, Feh, 8: The work of sinking the shaft in the Champion mine at West Point is progressing rapidly. It is now down 490 feet—the deepest ehaft in the county east of the Gwin mine, The mille in connection with the mine are in conetant operation, the ore cruehed being first grade. The ehaft in the San l’edro, at Mosquito, is down 100 feet and deepening as fast as the bottom can be knocked out of it. Gwin Mine.—The volume of water encountered iu the Gwiu mine continues eo large that it has heen found necessary to put in a larger pump from the 1500 level up to the first etation above. The work is now heing done, operations at the mine not being interfered with in consequence, however. All the hatteries are buey and will be kept so, Rock hae lately been etruck in the 1500 level, the ledge ehowing from eix to eight feet in width and the ore being of fair quality. EL DORADO. Tue Mines.—Republican, Feb. 6: The El Dorado canal is frozen, keeping in check the claims dependent on it for water, the Park canal company sending down eufficient water to supply the demand aside from the Tenneseee claim. The Utah mine at Newtown ie also supplied from the latter canal, and the mill hae been running about two weeks. Ou the North-eide the Gold Depoeit was etarted up last Monday, the new concentratore having been put in place. Mininc Anout Ketsey.—Mountain Democrat, Feb. 8: We etill receive bighly encouraging reporte from the Gold Depoeit mine, The grading for the new concentrator bas been completed, and the work of putting the machinery together has commenced. The mill was started up for a test last Monday. Ore is being taken from the lower level, which carriee a large Pas nay of enlpburete of the fineet character. n that level the ore body remains firm and givee promiee of cheering reeulte, botb ae to quantity and quality. Work ie being proeecuted onthe Esperanza mine, which is situated about one mile north of Johntown and within the great gold-bearing helt of that eection. The ore hody in the Esperanza is from two and a half to four feet in widtb, and proepecte well. A tunnel ie being run to tap it at a depth of about 100 feet, The Manefield hae been relocated under the suggeetive title of the **Cinche” mine. INYO, New Finps.—Jndependent, Jan, 25: Fine gold quartz discoveriee have heen niade near the foot of the lake, and there ie some excitement in relation to the matter. Quite a number of persons from Cerro Gordo and the hille around, have rushed off to some re-diecovered minee of Saline valley, eome 25 miles from Cerro Gordo. A new dietrict is being organized there called Mineral King. . Tue Ecuirsz.—The Echpse mill is running 15 etampe on gold ore when the weatber permits. Superintendent Eudey ie fitting up a five-stamp battery to run on silver ore, and a new amalgamating pan and a separate reeervoir for tailings. MONO. WEEKLY Minino Revirw.—Bodie Standard, Feb, 8: The work of developing our mines ie being advanced with gratifying rapidity, and each week’e report improves the record upon which we ehall demand the attcntion of the world to this ery the coming epring. Already, upon the Strengtb of the mild weather which we have enjoyed thne far during the winter, quite an immigration of etrangere has commenced to eet in, anxious to he on hand in good eeaeon to participate in the lively times which everybody believes to he in the near future. During the past week the Standard, Bodie and Bulwer mines have been visited by partics of exteuded experience in miues, who express what would scem alimoet exaggerated conhdence in the vastness of the wealth as yet uuextracted from their deptbs, The probability of finding the Standard veins continuing in the Tioga at the north are eo great as to render it almost a certainty. Tbe prospects of opening out a vein in the Blackhawk, uow that a shaft is beiugeunk on the eouth end of that company, are first-class, The ‘‘lightning drift,” 300 level of the Dudley miue, has not yet cut the Dudley ledge, but it muet reach it in a few days. We have heard pretty well authenticated rumors of a strike ot inportance iu the Maybelle mine, eaid to be of base ore, whicb asaays $100 per ton in silver. The Red Cloud is crosecutting west on its 400 level, and great thinge are anticipated of the Packard and Morton vein, which will be cut 150 feet below the Rola of discovery on the 250 level, The Nooulay is looking very nicely, and the Richer is said to be taking out eonie very rich ore.
Avour Benton.—Inyo /ndependent, Feb. 1: The mines around Beuton give more promises than pay, The Neal mine ie developing, aleo, the Sultan Hill, The Indian district contains fine proepects, The croppings there aeeaying from $30 to.$65. Capital ie all thie country wants to make it a flouriehing section. The Clover minee are extensive and rich ; wood and water being handy, they can be cheaply worked. The Indian Queen ie giving great eatisfaction. A new company will etart up the old Comanche works. Many other claime present goed proepects. . NEVADA. Watt Gravel Mint.—Grase Valley Union, Feb. 9: The main east drift is in 1225 feet; the lava has beca passed and gravel found on the bedrock again; the bedrock is of a eoft blue elate. The north prospect drift hae been run 60 feet, the bedrock is elate. There is no change inthe gravel and all work below the main drift has been etopped. Pirrssuro.—Of thie mine, situated in the Nevada dietrict, the’ Superintendent's letter of the let inet. saye: The lode in the 600-foot drifte preeente well, it being well defined, carrying rich eulphurets, The etopee at 700foot also preeent favorably, yielding large quantitice of good ore. The 800-foot etopes are being worked and yielding well. The lode at the 800-foot ie large and producing large quantities of ore. The mill is runniug well and doing good work, Ipauo.—Foothill Tidings: On acconnt of the loes of time by reaeon of ice in the ditch, the bullion yield last month was only $39,500, but the usual monthly dividend of $7.50 per ehare, amounting to $23,250, was declared on Monday, payable immediately. This makee the 114th regular dividend paid by the compauy, amounting in all to $2,600,750, out of a total yield of the mine of $5,302,204, Trems.— Transcript, Feh, 8: The Manzanita gravel mine near this city continnes to be worked a part of the time, altbough the aupply of water is light. There ie at preeent running in the main ditch of the South Yuba Canal Company about 3,000 inchee of water. There has heen a slight increase in the bead during the past few days, owing to the warm weather thawing ‘out the emall etreams that lead into Soutb Yuba river and Deer creek. PLACER. Various Camps,—Herald, Feb.8: Messrs. Lerman and Stuart, wbo have been engaged for eome time past in ruuning an incline in their drift claim, near Grizzly Flat, havestrack a fine proepect, which they think ie enflicient inducement for them to run a tunnel of 700 feet ona grade eufficient to work their ground. August Hazelroth has aleo struck a good prospect in his drift claim adjoining the Rough & Ready. This will assure that company in prosecuting work in their claim with vigor and eatiefaction. But little water in the ditchee at preeent, and bueineee ratber dull, On Saturday laet tbe Orion Co., at Dutch Flat, diecharged a blast in their claim of 175 kegs of powder. The result was an admirable euccess. PLUMAS. Gipsonvitte. — Plumas National, Feb. 1: The Bootjack mine ie turning out good pay, and a uugget weighing $81, was picked up in their dump a few daye ago. The Michigan ie showing good pay dirt, and Mr. Lowell thinke he has got the old lead aegood as ever. Durin; the rain the company waehed np about a thir of the dump-pile, dirt that wae not expected to pay but little, and they were agreeably surprised by a clean-up of $1,300. The North American company is running two tunnele, and have good prospects, The mines in the Gibsonville neighborhood eeem to be holding their own and the epring wili probably be a lively one. SAN LUIS OBISPO. La Panza Disrricr.—South Coast, Feb, 5: On our arrival at La Panza dietrict we fouud eome 200 men actively employed, four-fifths of whom are native Californians—eome men digging, eome men packiug pay. dirt to water, some rocking, eome panning, many walking over the country proepccting; all eanguine, all conenrring in the wish for more rain, The main encampment ie in La Panza canyon, in which, and ite tributaries, ravinee and gnichee, ia done all the present mining; prospects of line gold are found nearly everywhere in the water courees; coarse gold is found in the ravinee and gulcbes. The great ecarcity of water at preeent in thie locality, and the lack of skilled lahor, is the cauee of the placere not yielding larger amounts to tbe operators. Evidencee are that “pockets,” or rich deposita of gold, exist in the lower hills and flats which wash into the ravinee sud gulches which are tribntary to the La Panza. The tind in the preeent workings is indicative of what ought to exist in other parts of the dietrict which is more favorcd, having a large area of water-shed and an immenee depoeit of cement gravel, The belt of cement gravel haga length of six milee (the dietance cxplored and proepected by me) anda width of two miles. The topography of the country to the south and east ou the line of the cement gravel showe it to be much broken. Tbe belt laye in a deep basin or channel, tbe cement gravel has the color and character of the gravel belt of Forest Hill and Yankee Jim, in Placer Co., of You Bet and Little York, in Nevada Co., of Moute Christo, in Sierra Co., and varioue hydraulic banks in Yuba Co., although the water shed ie larger in area; there never ie water enough to work by the hydraulic procese. SHASTA. Correr City Miyino Irens,—Reading Jndependent, Feb, 8: The centinued fine weather for the past week has rendered it favorable for mining companice to purse their workinge without interruption, and well have they improved the opportunity. The Extra company have their tramway completed and are now carrying from Bully hill to the company’e mill about 40 tonsof ore per day, which is being reduced at eaid mill with ite ueual good reeults. This company have just completed their new emelting furnace and will make a teet of ite workinge to-day, and as there are many thoueand tons of good copper ore in this dietrict, which will pay well if succesefully worked by thie procees, We are all waiting anxiously the reeult of the emeltereto-day. Aethere are two other companies who have endlese quantitiee of good emelting ore, it will make times very lively in thie place the comin; pring, ee there will doubtlese be a number of these furnaces erected. The Potter mine ehows better ae they sink deeper, opening up a wonderful body of rich ore. The tunnela in the Northern Light and Winthron minee are being puelied forward as faet as poseible. SIERRA. Howxtanp Frat. — Dowuieville Messenger, Feb. 8: When ‘'The Empire” stopped work, about 40 white men were eent adrift, Some have gone to Foreet City to work in the celebrated ‘‘Bald Mountain,” some to Gibeonville, and neighboring towne. We all hope the Bonanza company will econ be in with their tunnel, for it will then’ be in their power to call the miners back and reetore the lively times, The Empire paid well every month. The Bonanza fill erobably do the eame. If it paye well, how much better it would be for the people of the town, and aleo the Bonanza company, if the latter would employ white men only. That would “make things lively.” Not ouly that; look at the example eet for othor companiee. The Buttes Quartz Co. ie working about 100 men but the preeent etorm will prohably enable them to put on a full force. TUOLUMNE. VALUABLE Mine,—Jndependent, Feb. 8: The Basin Slope mine, located ahout eight milee weet of Cherokee in thie county, ehowe immeuse bodies of ricb galena sulphureted ore, assaying froin $200 to $350 per ton. The mine is the property of Meeere. Lewis Broe Tue Mztones Minz.—The immenee reduction works at Melonee mine, ncar Robineon’s Ferry, are nearly if not quite complete, and many will await with considerable intereet the reeult of the venture. The machinery is, eo to epeak, incomprebeneibly grand and intricate to the eye of a tyro in mechanism; in fact, the daze of helting, ehafting and pulleys ie like unto a drunken man’s dream. Bnt if it worke up to echedule it will be a grand thing. A great portion of the machinery was brought from Boston. Ae the procese has proved eucceeeful in reducing the tellurium oree of Arizona, it ia confidently expected to operate ae well upon the rich but rehellioue matter of the Careon Hill mines, It ie a hig thing, and bae coet a mint of money. YOLO. CaLriFoRNIA QuicksiLveR Mine.—Yolo Matt, Feb. 6: R. G. Hart aesietant Superiutendent of the California Quicksilver mine, made ue a call yeeterday. He reports the mine doing much better than for a year past, but the company only running a force of 30 hands ae minere. ‘They are running two furnacee conetantly—one for the reduction of fiue ore, and one for coaree ore. With quicksilver at 39 cents per pound, the mines yielded sufficient during the month of January to produce $3,000 over and above all expenses, including the per cent. paid for sale of quicksilver. This isa pretty good eliowing for eo emall a force of workmen. NEVADA. WASHOE DISTRICT. Serra Nevyapa.—Gold Hill News, Feb. 12: To-day the southeast drift on the 1700 level will reach a poimt directly under the Nerth Cou. Virginia ehaft. As soon as the neceseary arrangements are completed, an upruise to connect with the bottom of the shaft will he commenced, ‘When this connection is completed, the ventilation of the mine will be the hest possihle down to the 1700 level. Work is heing puehed vigoronaly at all points. CaLirornia.—The north drift, on the 2150 level, running to connect with the eouth drift on the 2000) level of the Ophir, is now in 120 feet, the face in very hard blasting gronnd. In the drift’ south from the Ophir, on the 2000 Continued on page 108.
