July 5, 1879.] MINING AND SCIENTIFIC PRESS. 5 =P] MOQ Newark..... Bley The Mining Share Market. The mining share markct during the past week has not been of a kind calculated to gladden the heart of the averago operator, nor yet inspire tho musses with hopes of an carly improvement, Comstock shares, tho old king pins, have been soggy, resolutely slipping down in spito of determined offorts to maintain previous quotations, That stocks should be neg. lected on tho approach of our great national holiday is natural onough, the dealors patriotic inatincta getting the better of selfish considorations. Glancing over the field our mining industries seem fairly prosperous, notwithstanding statistics show tle yearly supply of tho precious mnetals to bo $160,000, 000 less than tho business of the worhl demands. This is a defictency which our mines could fill. Tho bullion yield, although short in Nevada to the extent of 20% this year, as compared with last, need not be regarded aos a giving ont of the mines, Roporte from all quarters show an unusual activity in mining, and an increase in the quantity of metal turned out, The glowing accounts of recent strikes iu Mouo county, Cal., in Arizona, Idaho, and Colorado, though probably exagger. ated, are no doubt in the main truthful, pointing to an early increase of our aggregato bullion production. The late falling off tu tho produot af this coast has been due maiuly to the diminished out-put from the Bonanza mines on the Comstock todo, which lattcr has greatly disappointed public expectation, both as regards the yield from these as well as other mines in that vicinity, ‘ho Comstovk group of mines mado hut a sorry bullion exhibit last year, a showing which the present year will hardly imnrove, even though the ore developments now deemed imminent should prove realities, A glance at the history of these mines is not caleuluted to eucourago investmeuts in their shares just now, mneli as is said about ore bodies kuown to oxist in the lower levels of some of them, Only alittle more than one year ago, what was then proclaimed as a veritable honauza was struck in the Sierra Nevada ground. Tho stock of that company, then worth $2.90 per share, at once jumped to 3270, raising the value of the mine from less than $400,000 to $27,000,000. But there was no honanza there, or nonc, at least, that has yet yielded any bullion to speak of, nor is it known when, if ever, it will make any large production, The price of these Sierra Need a shares afterwards fell to $37 per share, heing at the rate of $3,700,000 for the entire pronerty. Tn less than six months over $23,000,000 disappeared, nor is it difficult to say who were the chtef sufferers hy this annthtlation of values. This sebough an extreme case well illustrates, in a general way, tho record of these Comstock mines througli a long series of years, the assessmonts on the shares of these mines, as a whole, having amonnted to more than 50% of the dividonds declared, to say nothing of purchase money paid for these properties in the first instance. Leaving out divideuds paid hy two mines, the Con. Virginta and the California, the assessments collected from Comstock shareholders exceeds the dividends dishuraed to them hy more than $15,000,000, Notwithstanding the improved prospects of these mines through the completion of the Sutro tunnel, it will ho time enough to discount the advantages thence accruing when they come to he realized. Meantime let the magnates, who manage the Comstocks and have confidence in thetr future, go on and pee their faith by their works, whtle the public possessing themselves in patienco wait and see what shall come of it. . ® Vellow Jacket... Bullion Shipments, ince onr last issue, we have noticed the following bullion shipments: Northern Belle, June 23d, $2,4091,71 ; Indian Queen, June 23d, $4,117.07, Northern Belle, June 25th, $2,550.81; Ophir, June 26th, $16,656.03 ; Belle Isle, June 30th, $28,000; Independence, June 30th, $15,000; California, June 28th, $46,074.66; Martin White, June 25th, $5,895.39. PLATINUM.—Wo have heen shown a letter from T.’A. Edison making inquiries about platinum deposits on this coast. The letter coming from Mr. Edison is of course written with an electric pen, Platinum has heen found in small quantities in our mines, perhaps more in Butte county than elsewhere, inate the impression that it was more valuable than gold, the miners looked for it or tried to save it, hut it not being a paying metal its search was ahandoned, Intimately united with gold its separation is a matter of extreme difficulty. Our rocks are seldom favorahle for such a metal. It is found generally in the alluvial gold of mountain streams. The unexplored mineral regions may develop platinum finds, particularly the unexplored eastern interior of British Columbia, and the west source of Frazer river, in quantities sufficient for profitable extraction. Ng Minine UM MARY. The following ls uostly condensed from journals pudbUshed in the interlor, in proximity to the ndnes mentioned. CALIFORNIA, AMADOR. The new strike in Lake district, in the Mamimeth mine, is said tu be enormously rich, and the indications are that thia lead may extend for many miles. Traces are said _to have been discovered far to the south and southeast. The new etrike was made In the Mammoth 73 ft below the hottum of the middle tunnel. The assay reaches up into the thousands—beth silyer and gold. A rich strike has been made in the Orient, of a 10-foot ledge at 126 ft. Beuution.—The bullion shipments from Bodie district, through Wells, Fargo & Co., from June lst te 24th, inelusive, are as follows: Standard, $138,903.28; Bodie, $70,747.18; Bulwer, 17,253.30; Noonday, $9,121.27. The bullion is worth about 213,75 per ounee, with about 80% silver, Prescotr Distaicr,—The new Prescott district lies south of Bodie 25 milca, and Is 17 miles lony, north and south, by 10 miles wide, east and west. The mineral belt is a strict continuation of the Bodie deposition. A large stream of water traverses the eitire length of the district, and cuts nearly all of the principal ledges obliquely-—in two instances to the depth of about 1,000 ft. The entire eastern slope is mineral bearing. The ore bodies are 80 large and well defined that but little of the usual sinking has been done, The assays that have been made upon random ores, have run from $35 to $125 per ton, averaging 60% gold and 40% silver. One of the ledges shows a width of nearly 100 ft, mostly free milling ore. Itests.—Chroniele, June 28: The north drift on the hig ledge of the Standard Con. is in 260 ft; the fissure at this point is so large that timbering, on the Comstock plan, has to be resorted to. The ledge is 20 ft wide of clean ore; 700 level is flooded. The West Standard is in 12 ft of ore—half of it ¢800-grade. The new bonanza, Bodie, 13 working to its utmost. Quartz Mixixe Ce.—dfountain Messenger, June 28: This mine is situated near Jim Crow csnyon, Sierra county, within four miles of the Sierra Buttes mine. Already $150,000 have been expended in ita development. There are over 1,060 ft of tunnels, sbafts, drifts and stopes opened and ready to work, with the exception of caves at the mouth. Abvut 10,000 tonsa of good average ore In sight; vein varices from four to nine ft in thickness, and dips cast 46°, The strike is northwest and suutheaat; formation of walls taleose slate. No machinery is requircd for hoisting or pumping, and the present tunnel will give from 500 to 1,000 ft back. It is safe to aay the ore will average $40 per ton. Free gold is scen in the great mass or bulk of the ore which is relractory to a certaln extent. It can be worked by sweating (at an additional eost of $1.50 per ton) and sample amalgamation. TUOLUMNE. Items,—-Tuohimne Independent, June 28: The Sonlaby mine, in the tast few day's, bas been uneovcring very good rock. In the Hunter and Star King mines a uew two-ft vein has been fonnd, which shows Irce gold all through. The Spring Oulvh mine improves in appearance the deeper the miners go. The Humbug & New York tunnel cowpany's consolidutcd property has bcen sold to Moyle Bros., of Rawhide, aml they are now opening the old tunnel on the west side of the mountain. TRINITY. TayLor Fuat.—Journal, June 28: This flat lies on a horseshoe bend on the Trinity river in a rich anriferous gravel. Theo bedrock supporting the gravel is about 30 ft above the river, the gravel rising from 40 to 00 ft above the bedrock. The gold scales and fiakes are disseminated and evenly distributed throughout this vast area of gravel, which has been so thoroughly tested along ita mile and a quarter of water front, and in the interior of the fiat by shafts, that the amount of gold contained can be computed with u great degree of certainty. The very lowest estimates ol the quantity and value of thia gravel by reliable experts is 15,000,000 cubie yarda, of a minimum value of 60 cents per cubie yard, or $7,500,000 fross product. This isa placer or hydraulic mine, in which water, under a high pressure, does the werk, and very cheaply, too, The water Is obtained from French ereek, one and a half miles above the gravel deposit. The ereek Is fed by perpetual mountain snows at its souree, 60 miles to the north. Three miles from the gravel the water has an elovation of NEVADA. WASHOE DISTRICT. Sutrao Tunnen, June 30.—To-night the mountain tops overlooking the Washoe silver region and the Carson valley are ablaze with bonfires, und the echoes of cannon and discharges of Ciant powder are heard In every direction. The event which is being celebrated is the final completion of the Sutro tnnnel, for the reception of water from the Comstock mines, after 10 years of ceaseless labor day and night, and the expenditure of $6,000,000. The powerful eugine of the combination shalt of the Hale & Norcross and Savage mines was started up this morning at precisely 6 o'clock, discharging their water into the Sutro tunnel, at the mouth of which it made its appearance in 1 hour and 20 minutes, showing a temperature at least of 101°, which gradually inerensed to 118%. In 8 hours the water in the long drowned-out mines was lowered 100 ft. lverything worked to a charm, The wooden boxes, constructed of three-inch tongued-and-grooved Sierra Nevada pine, did not show a leak, and not even a particle of steam escaped from them, so that the tunnel, after the hot water was turned in, showed barely an inerease of temperature. ‘The water from tlie Sierra Nevada, Union, Ophir, the Bonanza mines, Best & Belcher, and Gould & Curry, will not be turned in for a eouple of weeks; and after all finds its way into the tunnel it is expected that one of the donbleTiue of boxes will have aiuple capacity to curry off all the water. Bevourr.—Enterprise, July 1: Inchne has reached a depth of 80 ft below the 2760 level. East drift from the 2700 station is in 141 ft, the face showing soft porphyry. The face of the south crosscut on the 2560 level is in fine looking quartz, Covunn & Ccnay.—East drift on 1700 level has been extended 20 ft during the past week. Total length of drift, O78 ft. YVeLuow Jacket.—Now shaft Is 2636 ft deep, working well The 2500 east drift ly in 305 ft. West driflia In 244 ft, lenving 26 ft to connect, Progress in this drift Is very slow, owlng to hardness of rock. EUREKA DISTRICT. frema.— Sentinel, June 29: Within the paat two duys 208,900 pounds vf bullion and five cars of fluc dust have been sh. pred by the Eurekn Con. In the Manburg the winze below the 600 level 1a in good ore. The rock of the West croxscnt Is sumewhat gofter. A considerable body of extra goad ore has been found in the eld works, inimedintely above the top of the winze from the east crosseut on the 250 level. fn the Fourth of July the face of the ilrlft from the lower tunnel level is In’ soft vein matter, showlng cousiderable ore. At the North Sonanza mine the north crosscut on the 200 level has reached a splendid clay wall, along which it has been driven some distance tu the northward. The main north drift, from which this crossent Was started, has been swung roid to the wert and haa struck the same well-defined clay wall at a point 100 ft north of where tt was reached by the erosseut, At this poitt au praise will he made to reach the Rule winze, ald at the same tlme the drift wiH be coutinued along the clay to the northward, Thia clay Is as smooth ag a plastered wall, and is perfectly regular In dip, Just Ingide of it will no doubt be found the ore body. Cross. cutting may be done at this polit at any time. The ore ean be reached in a very short tlme after the word to advance to it has becn given. PARADISE DISTRICT. freste.—Stlrer State, June 30: Mcvars. “Brick” Palmer, Murphy and "Big Nick,” struck the sath extension of the Bullion mine lust week, The ledge Is four ft wide, the ore looks well, and the average of five ausay's ehowa It tu be worth $155 iu silver per ton. The Arthur ledge was struck In the lower tunnel the other day by Alcxandor Middleton. The ledge is dipping east, and shows well In mincral. Soveral assays of ure from the Red Deer were mado this week, showing 3123.30 in silver per ton. Etko.—The mining eonntry northeast of Isiand mountain containa both quartz and placer mines, the latter of which can be made tu pay ayont $10 per day to the man, A8 soun as & siiflicient quantity of water can be got upou the ground, There is an abundant supply a fow miles dlstant from the best locations, the expense of conducting which to the mines is heavy. The quartz clains thus far, have develuped nothing important. Wittow Crerk.—Rich ore has heen found in a new opening on the Ethan Allen inine, on Willow creek. It assays $186.67 in silver to the ton, and contains 65%, lead. PIOCHE DISTRICT. Cuean Ur.—Pioehe Record, June 21: Eight bars of bitllion, valucd at $11,341.10, came up from the Dry Valley inill on Wednesday evening. This is the final clean-up of that mill, It having now closcd down, and there ls no knowing when It will be started up again. The immense pile of wood that used to be there Is exhansted, and alsu pretty much all the tailings. Cunisty Buntios.—The Christy mill anb mining cowpany shipped from Silver Reef, on the 14th and 16th of June, bullion valued at $2,224.33, Piocur Bu: biex.—Bullion to the amount of $17,490.37 was shipped during the past weck by Wells, Fargo & Co, ARIZONA. Picaono Mint.—A_ huge lump of retorted gold was turned out from the Picacho milla few days ago; value, $2,000, the product of 125 tons of ore, The quantity of ore now developed in the Picacho mine is immense, and amply sufficient to supply tho 15 stamps of the mill for many years. AJo Mixgs,—Work upon the of} Ajo mines has been resumed on a amall scale, and is already developing ore of singular beauty and of high percentage in eopper. Their easy distanee from the railroad, 45 miles over a good road, makos it possible to ship the ores with profit. Mouave County Mings.—The mines in Mohavo county are being worked by the Southwestern mining company. Some 126,704 pounds of machinery and supplies have arrived the past week, including over 2,000 pounds of powder, a fine new engine, a Blake crusher and a Davis pulverizer. The enyine hag a 16-inch cylinder and could work 30 stamps. frems.—Phonix Herald, June 25: Senor Gavilondo, of Magdalena, hag made a rieh find near his ranch at Babasac. The rock isa very rich copper glance about four ft in width, Assays at the mint at Hermosillo ran as high as $4,000. Average assays made in Tneson ran about 3390 per ton. Pinau Couxty.—Preseott Fnterprise, June 21: The Stonewall mill is now well supplied with water from the Hannibal and Stonewall shafts, and is running full time. Ore most abundant. Another rich strike has recently been made in the mine, showing native silver. The grading lor tbe new roasting furnace, soon to be erected at the Haskin mill, is well advanced.
