Although the volome of business has not becn great, owing perhaps to the political excitement attendant upon the near approach of election day, prices, however, have been well sustained. The decrease of the flood in the Comstock ohtained a response from the shares of those mines, and somewhat higher prices are prevailing. All things considered, there appears to he some prospects of a revival of business after elcction. Emigration of Miners from England. We notice complaints in the English papers concerning the emigration of skilled lahorers, resulting from the protracted depression in trade. They state that the mining population, especially, are turning their eyes towards ‘* fresh fields and pastures new.”’ Complaint is not made of the great numhers emigrating, but in the misfortnne that in these cases the best and most reliahle workmen hive off first, so that if the exodus extends greatly, their loss will he felt wheu the good times expected arrive. Some are going to New Zealand, with free passage, and others are coming here, Ou this coast the mining population is already large enough for the developments which are progressing. If we hecome overcrowded with miners, wages will naturally he lowered, and tronhle among the men will cnsue. We have not work enough at preseut here for our own skilled miners as it is, and any fresh influx is to he regretted. Still if these men come with money enongh to go to work on their own hock and develop new or partly opened mines it would all be very well; hut they donot, They come expecting employment at daily wages, and crowd out our own men, These colliers are good miners wheu working under specific instructions, hut they are not at all familiar with gold or silver mining, as Pacific coast miners are, so they don’t try and do mnch in prospecting or opening mines, Altogether we hope that any immigration of this sort will just at presentcease. Our miners have hard enough times as it is to get steady work, and any further invading will hring harder times among them. Bullion Shipments, Since our last issne, we have noticed the following hullion shipments: Bodie Con., Aug, 26th, $20,700; Northern Belle, Aug, 23d, $4,679.83; Christy Aug. 25th, $7,004, Leopard, Aug. 26th, $4,500; Grand Prize, Aug. 25th, $7,000; Independence, Aug, 25th, $6,200; Belle Isle, Aug. 25th ; $23,000; Hillside, Aug. 24th, $4,400; Northern Belle, Ang. 20th, $2,974.78; Con, Virginia, Aug. 20th, $48,886.32; Martin White, Ang. 20th, $5,225.60; Alexander, Aug. 22d, $8,350.31; Northern Belle, Aug. 18th, $2,807.91; Hillside, Ang. 2lst, $4,350. Bie Deprs.—The debt of the United States, less cash in the Treasury, amounts to $2,027,100,265. Germany appears to have increased her small deht of late. The following will show the indebtedness of three nations at the latest returns, given in pounds sterling for convenience of comparison: Great Britain, £777,781,596; France, £967,584,280; Germany, general deht, £2,544,083; Germany, railroad debt, £13,862,656. The consolidated annuities of England, known aa ‘“‘Consols,” pay 3% per annum. Increasep TRaDE.—American trade with Anstria has increased enormously since the Vienna exhibition, when the people got their eyes opened to the superiority of American inventions, farm implements, tools, etc. Hundreds of thousands of sewing machines have heen sold in that country, and farmers who have the means are rapidly supplying themselves with lahor-saving implements of American manufacture, Tue Russian and English commissioners are having trouble ahout the Russo-Turkish frontier. Vortex.—The winze from Ihe north drift on the 250 level hay reached a depth.of 52 {t, and Is still being sunk wih all possible speed, It is the intention to connect with the west crosseut now belng run from the Osccola, which will be reached ata depth or “ft, The ledge In the incline Is still looking well nnd is two ft wide, of good ore, The conipauy will commence work within a few day's in the lower tuunel of the Syndicato, for the purpose of cutting tho ledge at & greater depth. BLACKIAWK.—Main shatt is now down 323 ft, and_ still sluking. Wlnze on 320 tovel, on Warren vein, is down 140 ft, in a varied formation which looks well. The east drift is now in 100 ft from tha shaft, and looks remarkably well. Sortn Noospay.—Still drifting north on the ledge, which is looking remarkably favorable for the near presence of an ore body. Will continue to drift until tbe mine Is thoroughly opened and ready for more extensive work and exploration. Sour Briviper«.—Now engaged in crosseutting east on the 160 level; making good progress. Will cut the ledge a distance of 60 ftfrom the shaft. Everything looking exceedingly encouraging about the mine. Usiversity.—Shaft down $2 ft, ina formation of porphyry and clay, mixed with quartz, which all assays well. The boiler has arrived and the other muchinery will soon follow, when all wiil he put in position. Sovtu Bupwer.—Still drifting aud siuking on the 350 level ou the ledge. In the faco of the drift the ledge is looking well and is three ft wide of good milling ore. Winze No. 2 hns attained u deptb of 02 ft, and tbe ledge looks well in the bottom, being two and one-half ft wide of good ore. Still driving the west crosscut on the 420 level, and have made about nine ft during tho week past. Formation encountered very favorable, showing small strata of good-looking quartz, Sootu Bopit.—Chronicle, Aug. 23: The company's ground is on Silver hill, Bodie district, south of tlle Mono lnining company’s ground, and north of the north Noonday, and covers an area of 000 ft by 1,500 ft. The ghatt is situated at a point ou the lode line 500 ft south of the nortbern bouudary, Work was commenced on tbe 25th of August, 1878, by siuking and retimbering the old Hancock sbaft 40ft deep, and crosscut 75 {t east from the bottom. The crosscut was run ina formation of decomposed porphyry, clay and quartz, which bad tbe appearauce ofa good, stroug vein, the ore of which gave good results, both in gold and silver, The main double compartment sbaft has been sunk to the depth of 520 ft, and a erosscut run east 507 ft. The face of tho drift is at present iua hard bar of country rock, the footwall of Tegular porphyry. When this has been passed through it is expecied to intersect the veins passing through Silver hill, from the Mono to the Noonday, Duxpersero.—Bodie News, Aug. 22: This old minc is situated 18 miles west of Bodie on the east slope of Castle peak, tbe ledge has massive croppings, and is opened hy a cross tunnel G00 ft in lengtb, cutting tbe vein 200 ft deep. Drifts have heen run 300 ft ou the vcin, which is from 2 to 5 {t wido, exposing fine ore everywhere. Thecbaracter of the oreand of the country rock is different from that of Bodie, and likewise froin the great mines of the western slope. Metallurgica: diffieulties, which may now be easily overcome, havo retarded the dovelopment of tbis valuable property. NEVADA. Ivems.—Foothill Tidings, Aug. 23: About 75 meuare employed drifting in the various claims at Lowell Hull, and about 25,000 paid forlabor montbly. A fine ledge of gold-beariug quartz has been struck in the Surprise Con. mine, near Alligou ranch. The new machinery of the lron Clad quartz mine, near Rough and Ready, is about starting up steam. A rich strike in quartz is rumored to bave been made in the ncigb borbood of Chapman's ranch, above Nevada City. A clean-up of tribute rock, amounting to $1,100, was made from Alaska rock on Wednesday. The tributers realized $5 perday to tbeman. Rocky Bar Mixze.—Transcript, Aug. 21: The ledge in the stopes at {he Chavanne shaft is of good size, and produces an excellent quality of rock. Tbe same may be said of the lede in the new shaft, from whicb the largest part of tbe rock from the mine is taken. The quartz yields quite evenly, always leaving a fair margin of profit to the company. Deer Creex.—A number of veteran miners bave since last winter commenced prospecting for quartz along the banks of Deer creek east of Nevada City. Two or three of themare making considerable money, and others are developing ledges just found that promise to pay uncommonly vel. Gop Tusxeu.—The newly-developed mine in the old Gold Tunnel claim improves in size and richness. The new strike appears to be another vein in the series that comprise what is believed to bea true fissure, WasnINcTox Mine.—Grass Valley Union, Aug. 26; The machinery and shaft are completed, and lateral drifts are about toberun, A large and well-defiried ledge has been uncovered in the north drift. From a polnt in this drift 350 ft nurth of tbe ahaft a crovseut ling been started west, which lg moving slowly forward and showing suule goal ore, Another crosscut was started lust evening from a polut In this drift 76 {t north of that mentioned above, The crosscut on this level Iu Flowery ground has been temporarily delayed by putting In tho turn-tables fur (he twe lateral drifts running north and seuth froin it. On the 400 level the lateral drift north Is being swung around lito the ledge for a crosscut, but has not yet reached the voln. ‘The flow of water struck last week In tbe buttom of the shaft ly still strong and prevents sink. lug. ft is kept down, however, by Ihe punips and a little help from the glraffe. Cex. Virvinia.—The worth drift on the 1050 level ly
making four ft per day through faverable-lookIng vein matter carrying bunches of ore; total leugth, 112 ft. The crosscut east, 2150 level, Is averaging three ft per day through veln material coutulning streaks of quartz; total length, 152 ft, Lavy Bavan,—The north and south drifts eu the 750 level continue In favorable velu matter, and proparations to raise the lucline from this level to the 600 level are now completed. The west drift from the south drift en the G00 fovel is in a soft vein formation carrylng lowgrade quartz aud seams of fair grade. The north drift on this level continues In quartz of low grade. The east Crosscut from this drift la in quartz and porphyry carry: ing some metal and looking well. Mr. Hoop & Vaxcovver.—tTbe arift on tbe 1400 level Is now in 460 ft, tho face in good worklug ground. The ventilation in the drift has becu greatly Improved by placing In it a partition, allowing the fresh air to go in ou one side and out on the other, Oriia,—The station set at the 2400 level of the incline has been pnt in place and the incbne continued six ft below it. When depth sutticient for a sump has been attained, the station will be opened and crosscuts run into the ledge, The material is promising. The north drift, 2300 level, is averaging four ft per day; total length, 189 ft. The face is still in vein matter carrying streaks of clay and some water, Two ft per day are being added to the depth of the joint Mexicau winzo from the 2160 level; total deptb, 70 ft. The porphyry encountered contains considerable water, which hinders the work. The west crosscut from tbe nortb drift has been discontinued in order to push the drift itsolf along to exploro the Hardy vein in that direction. The joint Mexican crosscut, 2000 level, is averaging three {t per day, and is now in 72 ft, and in porphyry. Tho main north drift has been enlarged and retimbered and made a thoroughfare for tho mine. ‘he ore breasts yield as usual and preserve their usual appearance. Jvstice.—The lateral drifts along tbe west ore chamber and running both nortb and south are in exceedingly promisi ound ining spots of nice ore. The drift south on the 1650 level from tbe Alta is making good progress through favorable-looking ground. Sviro TussEL.—The nortb lateral drift is being pusbed ahead rapidly, and better progress is being made jn that running south. A prospecting drift has been started in a vein of ledge matter cut through at a poiut 12,000 ft from the entrauce and some fair assays bave been obtained. The drift is supposed to be the Occidental ledge. GoLnEN STANDARD.—Encouraging prospects are still being met with in the Standard tunnel, tbe face showing quartz bowlders of very pronuising character; 90 {t yet remaining to be made to connect with the Homestead shaft, CALEDON1A.—The winze from the 1600 level is nearing the 1900 level; total depth, 290 ft. The bottom is in bird’s-cyo porphyry, containing some water. The Forman sbaft bas passed the 800 level and is being continued on down. The flow of water into the shaft continues strong and the rock hard. . YetLow Jacket.—Work in the mine is confined to sinking tbe incline winze froni tbe 2600 level to the 2700. The winze is now down 245 ft on the slope below the former level, and making good progress. The work of sinking a sump for the shait below the 2700 level has been commenced, Goutp & Curry.—The joint east crosscut, 1700 level, is averaging four ft per day}; tolal length, 1,160 ft. The joint shaft has, during the past week, passed tbe 700 level. ALTA.—The rock encountered of late has been a harder formation of quartzite, carrying considerable water, the flow amounting to 140,000 gallons per day, which is, however, readity handled. A drift has been started from tbe bottom of the shaft on tbe 1550 level and is being pushed west toward the ledge. It will bave something like 200 ft to run to get tothe vein. The raise in the ore body from tbe 1550 toward the 1450 is continued. Catirornia —After baving been driven 580 ft west from the shaft, the joint crosscut on tbe 860 level bas been discontinued aud a drift commenced north from a point 53 ft from the face; total length of this drift, 15 ft. On tbe 2150 level the north drift leading to the Ophir is still being cut down. The work of dismantling tbe C. & C. shaft of pump rods down from tbe surface is going on, preparatory to replacing them with new 14 by 14 sticks to drive the double column of 12-inch plungers below. The work of changing the system will take about a week yet. Savase.—The water stood this morning between 125 and 130 ft on the slope below the 2100 level. The work of enlarging and retimbering the south winze is making good progress; lotal depth, 76 ft. Bulkhesding the crosscut from the ststion, 2100 level, 200 and odd ft east, in hard blasting ground, and making a reservoir, so that the water can be pumped from tbe 2200 station up to that tank and thence to the 2000. Tbis will be done with No. 8 or 9 donkeys, and thus the force brought to bear on tbe water will be doubled. Union Con.—The joint Mexican crosscut west, 2000 level, is in a soft vein formation, carrying clay and quartz in streaks; totsl length, 60 ft, The joint Mexican winze ig down 30 ft in porphyry carrying considerable water. Mextcan.—The joint Opbir winze from tbe 2100 level is dowu 70 {t and in porphyry carrying considerablo water, which interferes with tbe sinking. Tbe joint Ophir crosscut, 2000 level, is in vein porphyry, its face 72 ft from the lateral drift. The joint Union crosscut is averaging four ft per day; total lengtb, 60 ft, the face in a soft vein formation carrying clay and quartzin streaks. The joint Union winze is down 30 ft, the bottom in porphyry carrying considerable water, ARGENTA DISTRICT. Items.—Reno Gazette, Aug, 16: The Como milnes nre reported as leoking well. There are about 50 miners there now. The Eureka lad 50 tons of rock crusbed at Dayton, which went $17.75 per ton, The ore carries both gold and silver, and Is free milling, ESMERALDA DISTRICT. ‘ Dev Mostr.—Esmeralda Herald, Aug. 28: Work la still progressing at nnd arennd the mine. Tho Imiuense falluws-frame was placed in positien yesterday. The turn in the drain tunnel was completed en Thursday and now only 25 {t remaln to be min before connectien Is made with tho main shaft. The work of getting the big spur wbevl jute placo has been slow, but 1s finally accomplished. EUREKA DISTRICT. Iress.—Sentinel, Aug. 22; In the shaft ef the Wales Con, thero is somo very: d oro. The general appearance of all the miues in this district is Improving. FLOWERY DISTRICT, Brortty Ming.—Gold Hill Neter, Aug. 23: At the Brophy minc, Flowery district, the tunnel, at its face, is cutting ground frow the seams in which Issue strong currents of foul air and es. These gases are not only foulsmelling, but also quite pungent. Streaks of quartz and jay ore are also coming in, and from all these iudleations it 18 thought that the main ore body cannot be far away, PARADISE DISTRICT. ftEny.— Reporter, Aug. 23: Preparations for the laying of a railroad track are being made in the lower tunnel of the Big Prize. The Big Nick mlne is looking well, and yielding some good ore, At tho Paradise company's mine a number of carpenters aud graders are at work putting up a new ore bouse helow their lower tunnel, through which all the ore will pass in tbe future. Tbe ore now in the face of the drifts, shafts, etc., is 28 good, if not better than any yet extracted from this mine. Foreman Boyle now has 60 men at work in and around tbo mine, and expectsito be ahle to break ont 40 tong of ore per day, if required. PIOCHE DISTRICT. MAayFLOWER Mine.—Piocho Hecord, Aug. 23: A new and important devclopment has been made in this mine. In sinking the winze below the 130 level, at a depth of 70 ft from this level, soft ore was encountered, assaying $135 perton, The extent of this body of ore is at present unknown, At this point the ore body Is the full width of we winze—about four {t—and from nll appearances much wider. SIERRA DISTRICT. frems.—Silver State, Aug. 23: Several old minin& claims in this district are about to be reworked. Theyare the Lang Syne at Dun Glen, the old Anderson at Unionville, and the Eagle at Spring Valley. The Lang Syne is yielding pay ore. In the Lucky Dog a large ledge carrying rich are has been developed at a trifling expense, ARIZONA, Ivexs.—Phonix Werald, Aug. 20: Parties have struck a lead of decomposed rock which carries a large amount of free gold, and if it holds out their fondest bopea will be realized. A specimen tbat weighed an ounce and a quarter yielded 75 cents in gold. The Chamberlain mine, two miles east of Globe City, is devcleR ine finely and bids fair to be one of the best mincs of tbe district. The 60 level is still in ore which assays from $40 into the tbou~ sands, and alt is free-milling ore. The crosscut on same level shows ore nine ft wide. Tbere is now on tbe dump 100 tons of milling ore. Work is steadily going on in Richmond basin. Every claim being worked sbows rich ore. Native silver is extracted from tbe west sbaft of the La Plata. Bilderback’s claim, tbe Great Westeru, is producing fine cbloride ore; their ledge is two ft and gradually increasing in width. Joe Brewstor is striking chloride and sulpburet ore in the Last Cbance, r cluim he bas lately opencd. It runs up to the south line of the Mack Morris claim on tbe west end. The ores from the Davis mine, helonging to the Prescott miniug compauy, have been found rich enough to ship to England for reduction. and the returas were so satisfactory to the owners that, after deducting tbe heavy expenses on the ore, for mining, transportation and milling, they had a large surplus of money on band. The '‘E F” and Eastern Slope mines produce gold and yield largely. The Golden Chariot mine, Groom creek, is being opened by shafts, the deepest of which is now down about 40 ft. Tbe ore at this depth is very rich iu free gold. Tbe Manhattan mine, Hassayampa district, is yielding rich gold rock. A shaft is being sunk on the west extension of the Ricbmond with a good prospect of striking rich ore. Guoge District.—Silver Belt, Aug. 22: The Gould & Curry mine, a recent location soutb of Pinal mountains, sbows a two-ft vein, assaying $51 in gold and $3 in silver. fn the Pioneer mines drifting from the shaft eacb way at a depth of 47 ft. The breasts are full of ore and is being mined with a view of having it reduced at the Isabella mill, COLORADO. Irems.— Prospector, Aug. 15: Tbe Diamond drill, at work on the Denver lode, at Silver Cliff, Custer county, yesterday struck four {t of native copper, tbe mineral seeming to be in nuggets. In the “Favorite” lode they have struck a large body of sand carbonates, as rich a3 they can be. In sbaft No. 2 of the Lone Star mine, in the carbonate belt, abed of carbonates of unknown depth and width, carrying from 50 to 200 ounces silver, was uncovered at 60 ft from surface, aud tbe mineral is so easily worked tbat tbe output with one shift of men ranges from 8 tol tons daily. In the Little Netl tbe owners have found a deposit of carbonates 22 ft down, tbat mill 27% ounces silver and run well in lead. The Bessie, Katy Didn’t aud Favorite have an apparently inexhaustible bed of carbonates that look well. fn the Golden Gate the shaft is down 55 ft in the Gov. Pitkin lode, one milo north of Blue mountains. A shaft has been sunk to the deptb of 25 ft, following a tbree-ft vciu of quartz whicb, at tbe depth of 10 ft, showed 10 ounces silver and 21% copper, with a tew dollarsin gold. The Britannic tunnel, in Clear Creek county, is driven into the southern slope of Revenue Mountain a distance of 1,025 ft. Fourteeu lodes are intersected thus far, the majority of which are profitable fiesure veins of gray and yellow copper ores with galena containing silver. The Little Olly Clinton and Eagle Bird, locations of Eagle River mines, show a bed of mineral-bearing material from 12to 15ftin thickness. An incline has been run upon these lodes some 25 ft, and from tbe breasts sbafts bave been sunk, giving the tbickness of the deposits as above stated, and as yet no lime-bed rock has been reached. A ricb atrike of ruby silver has been made in one claim on this main contact from which assays were made in tbls city giving 1,743 ounced and 2,466 ounces to the ton. : " Trems.—Fairplay Flume, Aug. 14: Big Sacramento is coming to tbe front asa carbouate producer. The Tennesgee lode is said to show a fine body of mlneral of that character. {[ConTINUED on PagE 140.]
