Tenacity or Porrose.—The life of Louis
Favra, the well-known Swiss enginccr, and the
constractor of the St. Gothard tunnel, furnishes
ansxample of tenacity of purpose worthy of
imitation. When he began the building of tho
tuanel, which he was not permitted to see comloted, he waa attacked in the wildeat manner
ty ongineers and mechanics, who aceused him
of being a dreamer and a man devoted to idle
theories. Ho was a genius, howover, and forced
his way from a poor Jad to a world-wide repute
asa practical theoriat. He died worth millions,
which is not so much to the point of the moral
involved in his life as his steady perseveranco
agaiust obstacles to the carrying out of wellgrounded theories,
Lapor. —Tho world owes most of its growth
to men who tried todo as mnch work as they
could, The debt is small to those men who
worked as little as possible, and there will not
be many credits to those who shirk. To most
men more than eight bours work is necessary
for the maintenance of physical, mental and
moral health. The forces of the animal nature
and paasions can only be kept down by physical
exertions, If mechanical improvements should
discharge men from the nocessity of Isboring
more than six hours a day, there is no donbt
that society would rot in measureless and fatal
auimalism,
