Notices of Recent Patents,
Among the patents recently obtained through
Dewey & Co.’s Scientiric Press American and
Foreign Pntent Agency, the following are
worthy of special mention :
MAcHINERY FOR Repucine OLp Steev RaitroaD Rairs To MERCHANTABLE Bars.—Burronghs P, Brunner, 8. F. No, 219,616. Dated
Sept. 16tb, 1879. In the working of steel it
is of the highest importance that any disturbance of the tihers of the metal shall take place
equally throughout the mass. If an nnequal
disturbance of tbe fibera occurs, it leaves the
metal in a condition of uneqnal tension bighly
detrimental to its suhsequent manufacture.
Heretofore, in rerolling and reducing steel
railway rnils, it bas heen enstomary to aplit the
web of the rail at one pass throngh a cutter, in
order to prepare the pieces for the subsequent
action of reducing rollers. The web being coinparatively thin, there is a necessary amount of
drawing of the web of the rail incident to the
impact of the knives on the weh, and this
drawing, without nny corresponding drawing of
the flange and head, leaves the fihers of the
metal in the web elongated in relation to the
fibers in the head and flange. This nnequal
tension or condition of tbe fiher, when once
produced, is impossible to eradicate by any suhsequent rolling or working, and isa great drawback to the utilization of the steel. The ohject
of Mr, Brunner is to overcome this difficulty
and provide a means whereby worn-ont steel
rails may be rerolled into merchantable bar or
other steel in a cheap and convenient manner;
and the invention consists in rollers having
grooves or passes, one of which is provided
with a cutter or cntters, this groove or pass
provided with a cutter being designed and
operated simultaneously to split the rail along
the line of the web and compass and draw out
the head and flange portion of the rail, the
other grooves or passes operating subsequently
to reduce the head or flange sections to merchnntahle hars of the form desired,
VenTiLaTine APPARATUS FOR MinEs.—Joel
Kay and Simon Rockefeller, Bodie, Mono Co.,
Cal. No. 220,387. Dated Oct. 7tb, 1879.
This invention relates to certain improvements
in apparatus for ventilating mines, tunnels and
other excavations or chambers in which foul air,
gases or vapors are liahle to accnmulate; and ‘it
consists in tbe employment ofa steam boiler,
into the chimney or stack of which a pipe or
tnbe is led from tbe point which is to be ventilated. Tbis pipe turns npward within the
stack, and asteam pipe is led fromthe boiler
into the pipe, discharging toward or up the
chimney or stack, so as to create a draft which
will draw the air or gases through the tube,
and discharge it to he carried out hy the draft
in the chimney or stack. By this apparatus the
ventilation may be more readily and thoroughly
secured than by any device now in nse,
Exrension Lapper.—Oscar Marshal, Stockton, Cal. No, 219,749. Dated Sept. 16th,
1879. This invention relates to certain improvements in the method of operating extension or other ladders, derrick masts, and other
apparatus which it is necessary to frequently
raise and lower; and it consists in a novel combination of drums or rollers, and a movable
fnlcrum mounted upon a suitable frame-work,
80 that the ropes from these drums act consecutively upon the ladders, the first drum acting
to raise the ladder or mast to a certain position, and the second one completing its elevation, after which the apparatus is set to any
desired incling or position hy the aid of the two,
Winprass axp Derrick yor Borsa ArTESsIaAN WeLLs.—Benjamin F, Mull, Merced,
Cal. No. 220,408. Dated Octoher 7th, 1879,
This invention relates to an improved windlass
and derrick for artesian well-boring, and
consists: First, ina novel constrnction of the
Windlass, so that it may be worked by hand or
horse, or steam power, and hy whioh it may be
worked by cog or friction gearing for more or
less speed, as desired. Socoud, in forming the
derrick of light sections of boiler-iron connected
together in a peculiar manner, by which means
he is enabled to forma light, high derrick which
may ho easily separated in sections, so as to be
transported from place to place without difficulty.
Sprino Guns.—Riohard Wylie, Napn, Cal,
No, 220,325. Dated Oct. 7th, 1879. This device relates to an apparntus for throwing missiles, projectiles or arrows; and it consists of a
gun having a barrel, suitahly conneoted with a
stock and having aslot in its lower part, A
driving-block for the arrow or projectile moves
in tho barrel, and has a stem projecting down
through the slot, so ns to have the firing elastic
straps attached toit. Thcse straps are contained in achamher benenth the barrel, and
have one end secured at the front, so that their
teusion may be regulated. The weapon may be
properly sighted, aud is very accurate,
PLayino AND Matcnino Macuine.—John
W. Metcalf, San Jose, Cal, No. 220,299,
Dated, Oct. 7th. This invention relates to on
improvement in wood-working machinery, nnd
it appertains particularly to that class of machines wherein bythe passing of a hoard through
a planing machine to divide it longitudinally
into two boards, each of the two are planed on
hoth sides, and each tongued on one edge and
grooved on the other, so as to form matched
stuff, which may be headed at the same time;
and the invention further consists in alternating
the planing and the grooving knives on the
same sbaft.
SELF-Fastenino Tog-Weront.—\Wm. Zartman, Petaluma, Cal. No. 220,326. Dated,
Oct. 7th, 1879. This invention relates to an improved toe-weight for horses, and consists in
a peculiar construction of the spur or clip and
weight, by which tbe weight is firmly sccured
to the shoe without the necessity of using any
bolts, screws, or straps to keep it in position, so
that the weight is made self-fastening.
