The Horning Transei Muss tx’ CHinAtrown.—The } monotony of the place was somewhat brokea, yesterday morning, by a pair of Celestials, and the performances, before they were gotten through with, afforded the gentlemen of the Sheriff ’s office a first rate chance to try their wind and heels against the city police, repre. sented by Mesars, Scott, Rider and Counts. . ble Asher. A Chinaman, it appears, was indebted to another in a certain sum of money. “The debtor was the owner of a watch, which . he unsuspectingly. exhibited in presence of, hhis creditor. This latter, deeming the occasion favorable to get even, made a grab at ‘the time piece. This summary process the cowner of the watch resisted vi et armis, and a grand battle rosal was the consequence, in which tails flew and Celestial bloud weuld “have run, had net-the officers of the law tn. . terfered to prevent any such dire result. ‘The Johns, on seeing the officers,, nuf: only ‘stopped hostilities, but broke in opposite directions, one streaking it towards the Court Howse with aestrils dilated and tail standing straight out, pointing towards the southern horizon. It beitig evident that nothing short of a.greyhound could overtake him, Mr. Thos. Johnson, who happened by, fired his pistol in the air. Had John been steuck by a gak vanie battery, his halt could not have been ‘more sudden, nor could the bringing of his hands to that part of his trowsaloons remarkable for their baggy folds, been more spasmHe was secured, and search made for No. 2, who lay in aden, somewhere in the _lower part of Commercial street. Ashen: . bly, was so amended on ‘motion of Mr. Mil. . ler, as not to impose%a special tax for military purposes. As orignally framed it proeach citizen liable to bear arms.—This was complained of as onerous and use less, and useless, and was properly strieken out. te The Central Californian, published of its useful existence. t=" The Horace Smith case was argued before the Supreme Court on Saturday. Decision will be made known ina day or two. mity of his pursuers, however, caused him svon to break cover, and he started up Commercial street, showing as clean a pair of heels as-one wishes to’ see. Geo. Lenhart, Mesars. Scott, Rider and Asher gave chase, ‘followed by a large crowd of boys, and_ the chase, as seen from the baleony of the TRANSCRIPT office, was really exciting: As they turned the head of Commercial and into Broad, Mr. Lenhart shot ahead of the pack and soon overhauled the fugitive. The pant‘ing crowd then returned down Commercial, and Justice Kendall fining the Johns six dollars each ended the performances. “WASHINNTON AS A Man.”—Either because the San Franciscans entertain an enthusiastic. appreciation. of the character of Washington, or because they are perfectly . fascinated with Rev. T. Starr King's-elo. fa quence, or from both causes combined, the ‘way. they Pushed to Plati’s Musical Hall to hear Mr. King ‘tecture on “ Washington as a Man,” on Friday night, was, as the papers deseribe it, perfectly astonishing. Seventeen hundred fortunate individunls succeeded in crowding themselves into the fill and packed it to its utmost.capacity, while-a. thousand, after many vain.attempts.to.enter. . were compelled to ge home disappointed. The police, itis said, were obliged to interfere to prevent the disappointed ones from ‘unduly venting their feelings. Such arush never before was witnessed in' San Francisco. Mr}-King will deliver this same lecture in the nereerne Theater, to-morrow evening. ‘semen —Two young men—one from Moore's Flat, the other, from Blue Téent— were visiting Nevada, on Thursday, and in the evening they thought they would attend _ Catholic service, and being gallant young men they both were acecompanied by ladies, who live over on Piety Hill. After service was over at the Catholic Church, the parties in question started home, and when near the residence of Judge Searls, they observed two men, who immediately started down towards Deer Creek. The young men having ‘escorted the ladies safely home, bade them “‘ good night!” and started for town. They had not advanced a great ways before two men jumped out from behind a tree and de-manded their money. The gentlemen hesitated for a few moments, when the robbers presented.their pistols and the money wag immediately forthceming. One handed over . $1,10.and the other $40, all they happened to have with them at the time. EF The Delinquent Tax List for this eounty has been placed in the handé of Distriet Attorney Maslin, who will proceed immediately to colleet the same under the special act of the Legislature. By paying up at once, delinquents will be subjected to only ten percent. additional on their taxes ; fif teen per cent. after suit ia commenced, and twenty-five per cent. will be added to the ca—— ow * his surveys across the Rocky Mountains he saw millions of tons of wild flax and ‘hemp, aA any manifestation of “ cause and effect.” hus recently been given in the Eastern States.
