“WEDNESDAY MORNING, AUG, 13.
Fine.—The fire bells struck an alarm otf
fire yesterday afternoon, and the laziest man
in the city, as usual on such occasions, tarew
himself, regardless of muscular expense, into the street. The engines were outin the
twinkling of aw eye, giving evidence that the .
fire department is in capital orden. But
scereely were the boys bullying each other
on, than a retreat was sounded. The fire
was found to be in-some shavings and straw

lodn. Uncle Ike Williamson was hard by,
and pitehing in with Frank Hall they did the
work of two engines in a few ‘moments, als,
though it was no light job, The fire was
streaming up through the causeway leading
from Broad street te Reeney'’s hardware

Pourrical MEETINGS ev EUROPE. —The
French legitimists favorable to placing the
Comte de Chambord, whom they call Henry
V., on the throne of France, are to have a
meeting in Switzerland — It is the more important since the Count’s wife promises
shortly to be a mother, and the pretensions
of the family may not therefure cease with
this geueration, as was expected. Nobody
knows. in this changing world that the days
of the Bourbons will not return again, aud
the days of the-onapartes go by.
On the otuér band, a congress of the En~
ropean democracy, apposed to all ings is called in Loudun, duriag the Worid’s Exhibition
designed to serve as a means fur the Democraté of the several Evropean:countries ‘to
become acquainted with each other. It is to
frame a platform ou which all may-stand,
and to furnish the proof that a confederacy
et the European peoples is possible without
injuring the uational interests of any.
Parson Bro wNLow’s Views.—In a recent lecture at Washingtou, Parson Browa-~
low is represented ae saying :
“ This country is now pursuing & course
with this internat, wicked rebellion, which I
do notapprove of; unless we pureue a different and 2 more vigorous one we shall
never end this rebellion ia God's werld!"’
He added that the Government must adopt a a
more vigsteus war polic y, or give up the attempt to put dewa the rebellion—hbe was
sure of that. He had no faith whatever in
the ‘conciliatory policy,” for the reason that
he says, be knows that the rebels are determined not te be cenciliated. They wili only
give up to acteal brete 1 force.

Wasnincton, Aag: (ith.—A di atch
from the hea iquarters of the army of Virginia, six miles beyead Culpepper, dated Aug.
10th, says: “A battle was fought yesterday
between Banks and ptonewall Jackson, Gen:
Bayard, of McDowell's corps, with a cavalry
‘brigade, had been engaged the day before in
the extreme advance, near the Rapidan river, Skirmishing awd movements resulted ia
taking some prisoners, and the conflict ended
in slight loss. Bayard succeeded in baffling
the efforts of @arge rebel force to surround
and cut him of. “Yesterday he was engaged
for some hours, and with four regiments’ of
crivalry delayed the enémy’s advance until
Banks came up. The rebels under Jackson
and Ewell had crossed the = iti forces.
Their advance, fifteen thousand strong, was
attacked. by Banks in the afternoon, six
miles south of Culpepper. The fight was
alu:ost wholly with artillery at first, but the
infarntry became enguged about six o'clock,
and-adetermined-andbloody contest ensued.
Banks’ right wing, under Gen. Williams, suf-.
fered severely The rebel position was in a
wood, while the troops that attacked them
were obliged to cross an open field to attack.
It was not till six P.M., that it became evident the rebels were present in force. i
Previous to the tune the fighting had been’
a rather desultory cannonnade. At that time
+ the whole rebel force suddenty attacked ia
overwhelming numbers at all pointe.
all their regiments had full ranks.
In the evening Pope arrived on the field
from Culpepper, accompanied by McDowell
and part of fia Gorps, bat the battle was
substantially over, Banks holding. the same
ground he occupied at the beginning of the
battles After Pope’s arrival an artillery fire
was kept up at intervals wutil 2 o'clock the
next morning. Atone time Gen. Pope and
staff were so near the rebel lines that a sud~
den charge of rebel cavalry was made from
the woods. a quarter of a mile off, with the
view to capture them—the attempt was re
pulsed by a vigorous fire frum MeclDowell's
troops, and the Geveral and staff legt the
ground under a-cress-fire handling his treops
personally. Banks'’gallantry is highly praised
his officers and troops behaved well, although
some regiments retired in disorder when
overpowered by numbers. Among the killed
are Maj. Cook of the 28th New York, and
Lieut. Col Stone of the 14th Conn. Amon
the wounded are Ajt. Knight, Boyd, =
Geary, Maj. Mathews of the 46th Penn,
Col. Donnelly and Lieut. Col. Brown of the
wth N.Y. Col. Chapman and Maj. Blake
of the Sth Cunu., were wounded aud made
prisoners.
Gen. Banke was severely hurt by some
cavalry troops running against him heavily
in the side. Col. Ruggles, Pope's Chief of
Staft had his horse shot under him. Two of
Pope’s body guard were killed.
The 2d Massachusetts Regiment was in the
hottest of the fightand suffered severely. The
Sth Connecticut, 27th Linois and 44th Peaonsylvania were badly cut up. The rebel General Winder was wounded. Losses heavy
on both sides—not less than 3,000 killed,
Nearly
wounded and missing ob each side. Some
prisoners were taken by both armies. Jacksop and Ewell were both present. Keinforcements to the number of 18,000 reached the
rebels last night. About the same time ours
caine up. Generals Prince, Auger and Geary of the Union army are reported wounded.
