HOME MATTERS.
y MACHINERY EOR WasHoe.—Mr. S. MeFarland has commenced moving the machinery of the Mount George mill, near Grass
with a saw and quartz mill attached. We
understand it to be the intention of the owners to ereet_this machinery in that tract of
fine timber just this side of O’Neils. -So far’
as lumbering is concerned, the site is a fine’
one, though we can not see what a quartz
mill can.de there, a8 we are not aware that
any paying quartz is to be found on this road;
short of Virginia City, which is some thirty
miles from this timber. But then the presence.of machinery may prove an inducement
to prospectors, or, perhaps, something rich
has already been struck and kept dark.
There is a saw mull at Stout's Crossing,
some eight or ten miles below this timber, and
driven. by water power, the logs to which are
floated on the Truckee. But the rocky bottom of this stream makes this operation of
floating logs an extremely difficult and laborious one. particularly when the water
falls in the least, as then the logs lodge ameng
the rocks, and cannot be freed without’ great
ind dangerous labor. All the lumber that
this mill can cut sells readily at thirty dol'ars.
at the mill—not on a long credit, as here, but
for eash.
Maw Traps.—This is the name which the
San Francisco papers give to certain holes in
their wharves, through which men-were wont.
to disappear and either lodge inethe mud below, or float away towards the Golden Gate.
We have got some traps here also, and although they~are not so deep that a man will
fall through and disappear, yet they are sufficiently dangerous to make it a matter of some
risk for pedestrians, horsemen or stages to
pass over them. We have reference to the
dyer end of Mainstreet. A friend was telling Ws yesterday, that he had more difficulty
wad ran torerisk in crossing the street there
than in cross the Sierra Nevada. How
the numeroug stages which daily cross the
last bridge, in going. towards Grass Valley,
have not had some of their horses’ legs broken
before this is a marvel to us. We mentioned
this matter sometime ago, but presume that
nothing will be done till somebody sues-the
tity to recover damages. We have tri to
get onr Lokalitums to try the experiment of.
foing there of a dark night, so he might break
his leg, and thereby get a chance of suing the
corporation but he has declined the offer,
theugh we offered to furnish him with the
necesst ry affidavits, that it is a public thoroughfare and thie street impassable. We extend the same offer. to any one wishing to
wake a raise in that way. Who speaks?
THE SPEAKING.—Mesers. Stanford, Zabrisk'e, and Crocker addressed a large audience ofthe sovereigns last evening, on Broad
street. The audience were much pleased
with the speakers and. repeatedly evinced
their enthusiaem by deafening cheers.
Ix THE Crry.—A man calling himself Gov.
McDougal bas arrived an this city—drunk.
Wonder if this is the loafer that the Marysvile papers have had arrayed ander the head
afd. d. so often
MExIcAN SHoT.—Wm. Jenkins, of Los.
Angeles, got ito a fight—with a Mexican at
lfcleomb Valley, on the 41th, overa game of
cards, in ‘which a pistol was ut stake and was.
.won by Jenkins, and the Mexican refused to
give it up. They .both exchanged several
“nots and were hit. On Jenkins’ second fire
the bull penetrated the Mexicun’s left breast,
killing him instantly. Jenkins gave bimsclf
up, Was examined and discharged —

member of any church, but like ali well bred
younig ladies, says her prayers before retiring.—
One night she carried with her to her tuom a
Piekle, and laid it upon her bu. eau, thinking she
would cat it after her devétions. She knétt at the
foot of her bed for that purpose. Peggie enter~toqm, and seeing her deeply absorbed,
thought to improve the opportunity by appropriating the pickle to her own use. Shehad bitten
‘off a piece, and in chewing it, made a noise;
which her sister heard, who, wishing to know
the cause, looked up, and beholding Peggie devouring the pickle; huriedly arose, exclaiming :
**O Lord! excuse mea moment; Peggie ‘is eatiag my pickle!” .
THE Wipows. anp-OrpHans.—The German
Republican Club of San Franciséo has dissolved,
and commenced the work of reorganizing snd association for the purpose of collecting a fund for
) the support of the widows and orphans of Germun sdldiers, who die in defense ofthe Union.
