“Fara Acomnent AT Grass Pisces —
A tinner, notmied Joseph McDougall, in the
employ of Mr. Thos. Loyd, hardware dealer
in Grass Valley, went to the residence of Mr.
Jno. P. Bell, on Church street, to put a force
pump into a well which is about 60 or 70 feet
_ deep. Having occasion to ‘go down in the
down in the, well with him: The charcoal
fire soon so exhausted the oxygen at the bottom of the well, that McDougall called out
-to John Garrett, a colored man that was
-_shelping him, to hoist him out immediately, as
he was fainting. Garrett hoisted him up to
the surface of the platform that is over.the
well, and reached down to haul himout. He
caught him by the shirt collar and had nearly
got him out, when his shirt gave way and he
fell back into the well, striking his head
against the side and breaking his neck. As-!
sistance was called and the body taken out
and brought to the Pacific Hotel, where he
boarded. Coroner Henry held an inquest and
the jury returned a verdict in. accordance
with the above facts.
The deceased was a young man, about 25
years of age, who has lived at Orleans and
Moore’s Flat for a number of years. One of
his brothers,, who lives at the latter place}
was sent for as seon as the accident occurred.
He had lived in Grass Valley only two weeks,
and was esteemed as a sober and industrious
man.
HEALTH OF NEVaDA.—The general health
of Nevada is anything but satisfactery at
present, und ne great improvement, we fear,
need be looked dor till September. The complaints most prevalent are bilious fevers, and
‘though the mortality is not great, the doctors
have their hands full.
Our Grass Valley correspondent tnlitien
“us that that town ‘is also afflicted with an un‘ asual amount of sickness, and that the mortality, for the past three weeks, has averaged
one death per cay.
Grass VALLEY IMPROVEMENTS.—Three
~ hew brick houses are going up in Grass Valley. More fire proofs have been built there
since the great fire of a year ago, than in any
_ other city of the same size in the State.

fruit from our lady friend, Mrs. Sands, living
on Water street. Among the lot is a fine

eaten for some time. A small plum twig,
six inches lung, contained a cluster of twelve
as delicious plums as perhaps’ can be raised
anywhere in the State. Our fair donor has
