Having occasion to ‘go down in the down in the, well with him: The charcoal fire soon so exhausted the oxygen at the bottom of the well, that McDougall called out -to John Garrett, a colored man that was -_shelping him, to hoist him out immediately, as he was fainting. Garrett hoisted him up to the surface of the platform that is over.the well, and reached down to haul himout. He caught him by the shirt collar and had nearly got him out, when his shirt gave way and he fell back into the well, striking his head against the side and breaking his neck. As-! sistance was called and the body taken out and brought to the Pacific Hotel, where he boarded. Coroner Henry held an inquest and the jury returned a verdict in. accordance with the above facts.
