42 be pre. on. _ Dog, friend Chew will give him nicer hash eonstruction, containing springs and other from a letter of Garibaldi, received in New HOME MATTERS. . CavaLry Company. — A distinguished jilitaty gentleman of this city, one who made his mark in the commissariat department of the Pi Ute army, is now taking measures to get up.a ogvalry company. Hie intention is to take his company to Virginia, and show the famous Black Horse Cavalry of the Old Dominion what warriors who have fought Winnemucka can do. We understand that all he waits to begin immediately is for some patriotic and public spirited citizen to present him with a charger. He, of course, don’t want any body to give him an old spavined, broken-winded, string-halted critter, . but a fleet courser, one worthy of the illus. trious warrior who has to straddle him—one With flowing tail and flying mane, With nostrils never streake’d by pain, Mouth bloodless to the bit:or rein, And feet that iron never shod, Wuat’s 1x ANAM £ ?—A hotel at Red Dog, Nevada County, is kept by a man named “ Chew.” Chew’s hash and Red Dog sausage. The above is taken from the Folsom Tele-, graph, who, we believe, took it from Waish’s Varieties Now, if Walsh will go up to Red then the eat stews he gets at his “bit plate” boarding house; and as for the Red Dog sausage we can vouch for it, which is more than we could do fur the San Francisco article, where it is difficult to tell whether dogs or wharf rats predominate. Mr. SCHMIDTSUHNEIDER’S CONCERT AND BaLu.—This entertainment takes place tonight at Temperance Hall. Do not forget to attend, as it is not often such a treat is of fered. All the musical talent of the county has been secured for the occasion. Fire DEPARTMENT AT Rep DoG.—We learn that the citizens of Red Dog contemplate organizing two fire companies—one of them to be a hook and ladder company, We rather guess Chalk Bluff and Waloupa will haul their horns in after this. Broke THROUGH.—A team loaded with lumber broke through the Main street bridge yesterday evening. No serious damage was done. —_— tw Hume, the American “ medium,” who crazed half of Paris, is exposed as a trickster. It seems that a shoe of a very singular mechanical appliances, was found, after the medium's third visit, in the rpom, in the Tuileries in which he had shown Gf his wonders. Nobody about the palace knowing anything of this remarkable shoe, tlie inferénce that it had served the ‘‘medium” in the production of his “phenomena,”and had heen inadvertently left behind him on his departure seemed unavoidable. ; ATTEMPT aT SLUICE RosBInc.—The San Juan Press Aug. 17th, says on Thursday night of last week, the Fairchild claims, on San Juan Hill, were visited by one of the lightfingered gentry. Mr Joy was on guard at the time, with a gun containing twelve buékshot. He-fired at the robber who fled. Nine of the buckshot entered one of. the stanchions of the sluice near where the robber was discovered. The other three could not be traced. It is supposed he carried them off in some part of his worthless body. Saw Juan Minine.—Occasionally an item of news comes to our ears, a8, for instance, Messrs. Sears and Buhring are just beginning to pierce the rich vein in their claims. On Saturday they took out upwards of $3,000. On the same day, after an eight days, run with thrée pipes, the Knickerbocker 9" Wisconsin has thus far expended $175,000 for the war. The State proposes to keep three regiments in camp on its own account and the Legislature, now in session, is taking steps to provide $50,000 worth of arms for them. VoLunrerrs in WasHvor.—A fine military company has been organized in Virgima City, called the “ Union Blues.” The officers are: Captain J. R. Plunkett; 1st Lieutenant, W. J. Ford ; 2d Lieutenant, Amaziah Smith. @ A line of freight and passenger wagons ig doing a fine business between Red Bluff and Yreka, EB" The Sacramento ladies are preparing to furnish clothing for the volunteers who leave that city. é GaRipaLpI To THE Rescue.—It appears York, that inasmuch as there is now no war in Ttaly, he has thought of coming to Ameri-. _ © SHAW, 606 Front ea to offer his services.in the war for free. ple of love of country came up, I ‘evidences, eaye the Alta, of the loyal and selfsacrificing apirit exhibited by parents in yielding up their children te: the-service of the country, 10 this war waged against the Un-/ ion, we subjoin a paragraph from a letter just pth by a person connected with this of“My: son has grown quite large since you left, and upon call for volunteers for the la by Govefnment, to suppress rebellion, he was full of enthusiasm, (as, indeed, the whele people were) and made up hia mind to enlist. I, as his father, have feelings like other men, and regretted his determination, fearing for his safety ; but the higher and holier priuciid, ‘Go, and whatever you may— need, either in fire arms or advice, I give to the extent of my ability.’ Ihave six sons, and surely I can spare one for country, and if she needs them all she shail have them, and myself, too.” Eptrors, says ‘ Quilp,’ are excellent judges of physiognomy. The dullest man amon* ’em can tell by looking into a fellew’s face, as he enters the sanctum, whether he has come to subscribe, or stop the paper; to pay a-bill, or present one for payment, to take him by the hand or by the nose ; to offer him an apolgy or an insult; to thank him for a puff or to ktck him for a libel ~“Quilp’ is right. ‘ Vous avez raison,’ as the French say. : Secret Orders. : ° Miasons, Nevada Lodge, No. 13—Meets at Masonic Hall. on Broad street, every Saturday evening.— po ed ee ee Saturday of th nionth.
