4 HOME MATTERS.
PraiListic.—Quite a large crowd assemjed. on Broad street, night before last, and
from the excited movements of those compesing it, it-was evident that something unysual was up. Lokalitums, who was out
taking-a moonlight promenade, soon snuffed
muss, and, of course, joimed the assemblige. ‘The crowd was then going down Pine
street, and he was informed that two men of
muscle had agreed to try their respective
prowess on the saw dtist in Tracy’s ring, the
sum of . twenty dollars having been. staked as
q prize. just to make the game interesting.
As each of the champions had a large number of personal friends on hand, it was hinted
that the encounter would crop out in a good
old-fashioned free fight, a prospect which
warmed Lokalitums’ heart’s blood, and hé
therefore rushed té the ring and took a front
seat. The moon shone brightly on the amphitheatre, and a devoted relative of one of the
eombatants, taking the latter by the shoulders, pushed him into the middle of the ring,
with the brotherly remark-of “there, now,
j—n you, show yourself!” The individual
thus appealed to manifested his appreciation
of the. confidence. thus reposed in’him by
tossing up his cap and kicking up his heels.
Everything prom‘sed well so far, but the
other hombre, instead of coming up to the
scratch, as he ought to have done, stood in
the centre of a group of friends, arguing the
probabilities of policemen Knerr and Scott
rewarding his valor by shutting him up in the
ealaboose, a prospect which did not seem to
strike him as very flattering. The crowd
impatiently shouted: ‘go in! show your
muscle!” &e., but it was evident that it was
“no go”——a sober second thonght had struck
him, and. Lokalitums left in disgust, feeling
that he had been swindled of the sight of a
free fight by the light of the moon.
PLUMBaGo —A specimen of this mineral
commonly ealled ‘ black lead,” was presented
to us a few-days-sinee; by Majer S. S.Lewis.
who took it out of his mining elaim at Bucktye Hill, near Sweetland, in which it appears
in great abundance, in company with pure
copper and sulphate of copper. Plumbago,
next to the diamond, is the purest form in
which carbon is found in nature. We know
too little of its commercivl value to venture
an opinion as to whether its discovery by
Major Lewis is or is nota piece of good fortune to that gentleman. The specimen can
be seen in Blaze’s mineral cabinet. *

SmInALOA Mintne.—There is.a great rush
trom California to Mazatlan, at this moment,
te dig for silver in the Mexican state of Sinvjoa. A letter from Mr. Pershbacker, formerly of Marysville, te Aaron Davis, Exq , of
this city, dated at Mazatlan, gives a glowing
deseription of the silver mines in that region.
The ore is represented to yield from three to
six hundred dollars to the tun. The Murysville Appeal mentions the recent return to
that city. of Mr. N. E Farrell, who has been
suceessfully engaged in mining in Sinaloa, «nd
who confirms Mr. Pershbacker’s statements.
Mr. Farrell will return to Mazatlan immediately.
For THE Geysers.—N. P. Brown, Esq ,

One CoMrorT.—The melancholy feelings
excited by the war between the North and
South are relieved. by one comforting hope,
to wit: That it will lead to a permanent setthement ofthe: miserable sectional quarrel
‘which has disgraced the country twenty-five
years. This is « small consolation, it 1s
true; but if this result sball be secured it
will be one advantage against a thousand
evils. The belligerents will learn what can
be done, and what cannot. Common sense
will take the place of visionary sentimentalism and fanatiea) rant.. The demagogues
that have inflamed end deluded the.minds of
the people will ‘be visited with the condemnation they deserve. The people of the two
sections will understand themselves and each
other better, and possibly their respect for’
each other will be increased. Let us hope
that this settlement wil be final—and from
that hope gather one. drop of comfort to
mingle with the full cup of our present sorrow.—Pacific Messenger.
