‘QmzGa IN ASHES.—On Saturday night,
ast, 24th'idst., about 10-0’clock, a fire broke
out inthe wash room of the Omega Hotel,
-owned by C.D. Van Vranken and kept by
Mrs. Hall, which spread with great rapidity,
and, in haifan ‘hour, destroyed ali the buildings in the town, none escaping except some
straggling cabin’ in the outskirts. The pro3 of the flames was so rapid that but few.
household effects and articles of personal
property were saved. No lives, we are
aappy to say, were lost. A complete list of
the sufferers has not been furnished us. Sublosers, with their estimated losses. Mrs!
Hall, it is thought, lost all her. property, to
what value we can not learn ;joined we give the names of the <M

THE WOUNDED SLUICE RoBBER.—The
; robber, who was shot, while in the act of’
pilfering amalgam from Sears & Buhring's
élaim, at North San Juan, on Saturday morning, and who gives his name as John Wilson,
is pow in Nevada hospital, and Dr. Hunt, the
County Physician, says his case is a very cri‘tical one. His arm is horribly shattered and
ust he amputated near the shoulder. Two
buckshot entered his neck and ran up between the skull and scalp, but the wounds .
‘they made are not dangerous. His side was
not teuched by the shot. He is a vagabond
thief, whe bas been seen and known in this
tity, for several months.—Jim Pettinger,
who was brought.to the hospita) in the same
conveyance with Wilson, has been . unjustly
weused of being particeps criminis in the
sluice robbery. Poor Jim was badly hurt by
aboard pile falling on him while taking a quiet
enooze in its shade. One of his legs is much
burt, but not broken, and he will soon be
well. ‘

Ee Stump speakers, as the campaign progreases toa close, are stirring their “stumps,”
if we can judge by the way in which they
pile it on the good people of our neighboring
towns. Not less than five orators inftio dea
their eloquence on the good folks of Red Dog
on last Saturday evening, viz : Messrs. Hawley, Belden, Dunn, Caldwell and John Hus
sey. We are informed that their audience
was the largest that has assembled at Red
Dog this season. These orators, we believe,
are all Union Democrats.

Fravups in Curep Meats.—We learn,
from the last number of the California Farmer, that tLere are provision dealers in San
Franciseo who muke a business of souking,
scouring, and resmoking old imported hams,
shoulders, and flitches, and selling them for .
freshly cured articles of Californian production. These scoundrels — infinitely worse
than professional thieves—not only rob their
Weuspecting customers of their money
they are laboring to ruin the industrial welfare of the state by destroying the reputation
of one of its most important products. "The
editor of the Farmer says he knows the perPetrators ofthis new epecies of villainy. Is’
there nw law to punish them? They are, #t
nce, robbers and traitore—they rob their
tustomers and war against the true interests
of the State—and the gallows is too good for
them. Let our mountain dealers be on their
guard; and purchase only at reliable bouses.
