TRURSDAY MORNING, AUG, 26th, Artempr aT Murper.—Tuesday night, nbout nine o'clock, William Smith, who had been. in the employ ef “William Barton as cook, attempted to murder his .employer.— The following difficulties occured between the parties. a few days-agu:—Smith teld Mr. Barton on last Thursday that he was going ‘to-leave, that the boys had been troubling him and he would not stand it. ~Mr-B-, soon aft‘er went into the kitchen and found a large -knife. “Smith told hit that he would mot let the men impose on him; that he would use ‘that Knife on them. After some words Barten chocked Smith and told him to leave and woine on Saturday to get his money, und; as Mr. Barton thought, leit tewn: Tuesday night, Mr, .Barton was sitting near the windew when Smith came to the window and fired, holding the pistol so near that the glass was blackened by the powder. The ball entered the back part of the left arm, about six inchesvelow the shoulder. Drs. H. Huiit’ and Bates were called but were unable that night to find the ball. At the time the shot was fired, George McCloud, a child six or ‘seven yenrs old, was standing at the right of of Mr, Barton. Had the Vilain fired a few inehes to the left the child wowld.nave been killed. As soon us the shot was fired_ Smith started out on the Washington road. Marshal ~ Pavitsor and Officer Kiierr followed him some distauee, but, in the darkness of the night, the would-be murderer, was enabled to make hia escape ; up to the present time he has-net-been taken. Mr. Barton is not thought to be very seriously injured.
