TRURSDAY MORNING, AUG, 26th,
Artempr aT Murper.—Tuesday night,
nbout nine o'clock, William Smith, who had
been. in the employ ef “William Barton as
cook, attempted to murder his .employer.—
The following difficulties occured between
the parties. a few days-agu:—Smith teld Mr.
Barton on last Thursday that he was going
‘to-leave, that the boys had been troubling him
and he would not stand it. ~Mr-B-, soon aft‘er went into the kitchen and found a large
-knife. “Smith told hit that he would mot let
the men impose on him; that he would use
‘that Knife on them. After some words Barten chocked Smith and told him to leave and
woine on Saturday to get his money, und; as
Mr. Barton thought, leit tewn: Tuesday
night, Mr, .Barton was sitting near the windew when Smith came to the window and
fired, holding the pistol so near that the glass
was blackened by the powder. The ball entered the back part of the left arm, about six
inchesvelow the shoulder. Drs. H. Huiit’
and Bates were called but were unable that
night to find the ball. At the time the shot
was fired, George McCloud, a child six or
‘seven yenrs old, was standing at the right of
of Mr, Barton. Had the Vilain fired a few
inehes to the left the child wowld.nave been
killed. As soon us the shot was fired_ Smith
started out on the Washington road. Marshal
~ Pavitsor and Officer Kiierr followed him
some distauee, but, in the darkness of the
night, the would-be murderer, was enabled
to make hia escape ; up to the present time
he has-net-been taken. Mr. Barton is not
thought to be very seriously injured.
