HOME MATTERS.
MiswaP’ TO TWO CANDIDATES.—As
Messrs. Joseph Kutz, Republican candidate .
for Senator, and W.H. Sears, Republican
candidate for Assembly, were quietly jogs ing
ter crossing Webber's Bridge, they made up:
their minds to walk to the top of the hill,
leaving the-horse, who, in general, is a very
sensible animal, to follow with the buggy at
his leisure. The horse, like some politicians, ’
making near cuts, practiced that policy at an-. ®t @ great bargain. Apply at J. MICHEL’S

that Kelly had been using very insulting language towards Corbett, who endeavored to

EscaPeE FROM A Cave.—Near Alpha, on
last Tuesday, two men, one of whom we
learn is named McElroy, who were at work
ina deep cat, were caved upon by a large. . i
mass of earth which covered them. Instant
and active exertions were made, by their fellow laborers, to unearth them, which were
erowned by complete success in drawing
both men out, a’ive and almost unharmed.
McElroy was slightly hurt in one of his arms,
the other man had not a bruise.
DoGeGevNEss.—Some infernal villain has
shot the Grage Valley National’s dog. It is
a dogma of the schools, that “ a living dog is
better than a dead lion,” but a dead dog, we .
pagine, though belonging to a newspaper, is
not a whit better than any other ‘dead matter’ The dog slayer ought to be held up to
public scorn in the dogondest kind of doggerel verse.
Snot 1x Fxonr—In modern tactics
which almost as often throws the back of
the soldier toward the enemy as his front,
itis folly to attach cowardice to a wound in
thé rear. It is, however, sometimes done.
A private was wounded in the Bull Run
fight, and his father arrived at the hospital
just as a surgeon was removing @ ball from
the back of his shoulder. He lay with his
face downward on his pallet. “Ah, my
peor won,” said the father mourofally, “ I
am very sorry for you; but it’s a bad place
tobe hit in—thus in the back.” The sufferer turned over, bared the breast, and pointing to the opéning above the arm-pit, exclaimed. “Father, here’s where the ball }
went in.”

Homicwwe ar Jamestown. — A man
named Ries was fouud in bed with the wife
of a citizen of Jamestown, at half-past ten
o'clock on Saturday night, August 24th,
when the injured husband suddenly came
upon the guilty pair and took Ries by the

-@f the husband is McGirty, and he was engaged with a threshing fmichine in another
rtof the county, and had just returned
after an absence of two'or three weeks.
He went out immediately after killing Ries,
surrendered hisself to a Justice, and was
taken to the county jail. The woman, it is
supposed, must have escaped in the affray, as
she has not been seen since. The general
opinien is that she has fled to the woods.—
