HOME MATTERS.
FaTal ACCIDENT.—Yesterday morning a
negro man, known as.“ Bob,” was instantly
filled at Brandy Flat, near Washington, Neyada county, by the caving of a_bank under
which he was’ mining. A white person,
semed Frank Willams, who was working
along with Beb, wax severely hurt. by the
same cave, but hopes are, entertained of his
recovery. Bobdformerly lived at Omega, and
was much respected by all who knew him as
_a¥ighly honest and worthy man.
LOWER MaIn STREET.—Do our honorable and venerable Trustees ever attempt
“traveling Main street below the theater? If
they do not, it may be interesting for them
to know that an eight-mule team, drawing a
moderately heavy wagon, was stalled there
yesterday, costing the driver a good deal of
whipping and an abundance of hell-deserving
profanity before he got out of difficulty. The
planking on Main street is defective and the
sooner the street can be repaired the more
it will redound to the credit. of the city.
Huecu KetLy.—The Sacramento Union,
of Thursday, has a local item, stating that
Hugh Kelly, of Nevada, on Wednesday last,
ut Sacramento, got into a fight with Patrick
Riley and received severe gashes on his
temple and jaw. There is a grave mistake
in this, as Hugh Kelly, of Nevada, is’a wellconditioned citizen, who attends quietly and
penceafy to the dispensation of creature
comforts, on Broad street, Nevada, and has
not been in Sacramento for several months.
Will the local of the Union accept our apolIMPROVED STREETS.—Mr. William Scott,
with his industrious corps of road-makers,
is performing wonders on the streets in the
immediate vicinity of the Court House.
Pine und Church streets already show unmistakable evidences of Mr. Scott’s eapability of mending the ways of the world.
A SABBATICAL CHANGE.—The DaILy
TRANSCRIPT, hereafter, will be issued on
Sunday: mornings and not on Monday mornings. Our motives for making this change
are partly pious, partly moral, and partly of
apurely business character. We shall explain them in our to-morrow’s issue in full.
BRECKINRIDGE DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION.—This body will assemble this forenoon, at 10 o’cleck, in the Court House, for
the purpose of forming a ticket for Nevada
eounty. The leaders of the party anticipate
a full turnout of delegates.
MARYSVILLE AND OROVILLE RAILROAD.
—The Marysville Appeal says we learn from
Binney, of Chenery & Binney, contractors
upon the above pémed road, that work will
be restimed upén the track as soon as, sufficient hands €an be. procured; and the road
will be made ready to receive the iron and
rolling stock, for which, we understand, contracts have been already made or filled. The
prospects for a completion of the road are
encouraging.

Inpictine Trarroks.—The Grand Jury:
ofthe United States District Court in
Baltimore, on the 10th of July, found true
bills of indictment for treason-againet John
Merryman, Charles Cockey, Samue! Mactier,
Lewis Bitter, James McCartney,. Phillip
Casmire, Michael Hooper, and Richard H.
Mitchell. If found guilty of the charge, the
punishment is death.
CALIFORNIA CONGRESSMEN.— Under the
eighth general census, that of 1860, California
is entitled to three members of Congress.
So the’Secretary of the Interior who made
the apportionment reports.

LAW OF Biockape.—Lord John Russell
has given another and important English
reading of the law of blockade in Parliament.
the right of the New Granadian Confederation to close its ports by blockade ? wnen he
replied that, in case of rebellion, the government had a right to.close the perts, but:if in
cupied by the insurgents, they could not
take that step according to international law. .
The British naval. commander would not,
therefore, recognfze the . right of closing theports. i
te The Richmond Einguirer has sued a
firm in New York for $4,750, alleged dues
for advertising. Defendants refuse to pay
because they got no copy of the Enquirer, according to agreement, and allege that the
only result of advertisement has been an accumulation. of “$150,000 in’ Seuthern bad
debts. The jury found for defendants.
DEGREES IN RoastING.—A_ correspondent of the Appeal, who recently went north,
said that at Sacramento. it was insufferably
hot, at Marysville it was hotter; at. Shasta
he fizzled and stewed and fried, and nearly
melted down into his-boots.
It is said the editor of the Herald is being
loudly denounced by Genervl Buttler as a
traitor. ‘The commandant at Monroe implies
that he has conclusive evidence that he (the
editor) is in correspondence with the rebels,
giving them aid and comfort and —assistance.
BS
te It is asserted, but we cannot believe
it, that the agents of the Southern Confederacy, at Paris, recently tendered the monarchal crown of that Confederacy to young
Captain Bonaparte, grandson of Jerome and
Madame Patterson Bonaparte, now in the
French army. He peremptorily refused the 4
tempting bait.

‘When the world became so corrupt that
the Lerd could do nothing with it. He was
obliged to give it a thorough sousing in cold

TRINITY Cave.—The Douglas City Gazette says, that a party are going to explorea
cave in that vicinity, the existence of which
has been known for some time.
THE NEGRO.—Thurlow Weed condemns
the course of the Abolitionist, Lovejoy, for
attempting to drag the slavery question into
He says. ‘‘ The country will insist that the halls ef Congress are not the
proper place just now to trot out the negro.”
