TROTTING RACE.—A large concourse of people were {i attendance at Carter's course race, for a purse of $100.Three entries were made for the race, the horses—tp: go-.in ley mare, and Wm. Watt's sorrel horse. . -The horses got off mm beautiful style, in the first heat, but the Dawley mare made the’ best time and came home first. On the sec. ond heat'the horses started before the word. was given, which created: some little misun‘ derstanding, when the Watt horse was withdrawn from the race. The second and third heat was contested for by the remain= ing horses and was won by the Dawley mare, Seourse, and we imagine there will be a large ‘trowd present to enjoy it. Carter's is a pleas. ‘ant place to visit—more especially during being.offered to the public in-th> way of racing, wrestling, ete. : Trwpuctvo Fire DEPARTMENT.—In rather Hose Company, of which Charley Gray, a very clever gentleman, is Foreman. They have four hundred feet of hose, and four hundred feet more purchased and on the way, with a vew carriage. They are supplied with water from the neighhoring ditches, and have a hydraulic pressure with which water is thrown one hundred and thirty feet, perpendicular'y. They have four fire plugs’ in different portions of the town, with which-they can command water: to extinguish fire anywhere in the place. Timhuctoo is not likely to suffer severely from this devouring element. An UNLUcKY Ick CkEAM PEDLAR.—A gentleman who manufactures ice cream dis. patched an enterprising youth to the race track, yesterday, with a stock of cream and five dollars in change, to facilitate his transactions with his race track customers. In the evening he came home with his cream intact, but the five dollars were gone. The hapless fellow, according to his tale, had been robbhed whilst his attengion was concentrated on the races. His employer has no suspicion that he invested on the losing nag—not the . slightest. PERSONAL.—We had the pleasure of a call yesterday, from Mr. Isidore Choinski, a native of Poland, of fine literary attainments, now a resident of San Francisco, and whois the entertaining and pungent. “ Choyno ” of the Marysville Appeal. He is making himself acquainted with the men and manners of the mountains. There is a world ‘of truth—and we are sorry if is truth—in the following editorial paragraph, which we copy from the Folsom Telegraph: THE PoweER OF THE PEOPLE —It is generally supposed that the power of the people of the United States is of the most tremendous nature. So it would be if they only knew it, The lien caged is in the same situation—he could break ail obstruction to pieces if he only Knew his power. The power of the American people has been caged by the showmen of politics; and now, instead of being used to properly control the pobtep: of the country for its harmony and happiness. they are turned out to exhibit it in civil war. -But, ag we were going to say, _if we had the power of the people we would ‘haal the two demoeritic elements and the one opposition element up, and dump them out as 80 many. catt loads of oppressive rabbish, and then sift from’ the mass What little ‘true worth there might be, and keep on dumping and sifting, till from the people themselves we had obtained just such men as the country and all circumstances would seem to require ; depending, in all instances, mere upon the capacity of those selected to serve, than their own selfish propositions for position. We never can get rid of the notion that the failures of the power of the people have been the causes of the country’s troubles. The people have been led when they should have led: they should have selected when they submitted to corrupt selec‘tiene for offices ; and, finally, their own surrender of the free means of selection has reduced them to a burdensome fighting out of the errors of their leaders. For the past eight years it has attracted the attention of connoiseurs of Whiskies at the South, and in other portions of our country. The consumption and demand for it dre daily increasing; and we are confident that it must eu; ercede all other forms of restorative liquors, combining as it does every element of Purity, Strength, Palatability and Healthfulnese, ich should char acterize a beverage suited to our age and country IMITATIONS. The high appreciation which connoisseurs and the public generally have extended to our “OLD MAGNOLIA ” and other brands of pure Whisky and the consequent increasing demand for them in all sections of the country, have ‘induced un principled parties to resort to the most unfair and disrepatable imitations and counterfeits of our brands and products. We have been advised by our correspondents in various sectione »f the country, that a common and very inferior Whisky has been sold under the namcs of “Magnolia ” and “‘ Family Rye,’’ thus injuring the reputation of our own PUKE and STANDARD article, and imrosing upon the public inferior compounds.
