brightest Intellect on the const, and speaking of hid great services in Congress, speake
of the result of the primary eleetion here as
evidence that hig. popularity hae waned in
thie county. A word of explanation will set
that right. The primary election in this
town turned solely on the, question who
shouldbe Sheriff, and Mr. §,"s name was
ueed on the unsuccessful ticket. His pep. ularity was tot in question. When the
Convention met five out of the six memders of the last Legiglitute who voted for
Mr. 8. on every ballot for U. 8. were renominated, a personal compliment to Mr. 8.
whieh he acknowledged in a speech before
the Gonyention. The other two wete not
candidates, aud tWo. warm friends of Mr.
8. were put ih their places. Outof atichet
of sixteen pames nominated, Mr. 8. voted in
Convention for fifteen, and had no particular
objection to the other—a fact showing his
4trionds were -not—overslaughed:—Theto-is
not amore popular man than Mr, Sargent
in this county ; a popularity partly: aciaing

fused compliance with bis wishes, The fault
longed to Democrats as every mtzlligent aan
knew at the time. He paid he had been
appointed to survey the boutidary hne between the United States and Mexico, but a.
Whig Adinipistration had neglected to turnish the means and he had been obliged to
pay the expenses of the commission himeelf
out of higown pocket! Those who know
how profusely the means furnished him by
Government were squandered by him iu
1849, would not have wondered if a check
had been put upon bim by any Administra«
tion, but the idea uf his paying*twenty-five
dollars out of his own pocket is absurd.
Warming up with the rot-gut he had imbib-~
0d before going on the stand, and his real
nature getting the upper hand of his prudence, John B, Weller went on to denounce
the Government in unmeasured terms. He
said it was unw®rthy of support, and it would
be ‘an act approved by God und man to
