A word of explanation will set that right. The primary election in this town turned solely on the, question who shouldbe Sheriff, and Mr. §,"s name was ueed on the unsuccessful ticket. His pep. ularity was tot in question. When the Convention met five out of the six memders of the last Legiglitute who voted for Mr. 8. on every ballot for U. 8. were renominated, a personal compliment to Mr. 8. whieh he acknowledged in a speech before the Gonyention. [ VERY.—Is it or is it: not true that John personal knowledge, he d [admitted into the Union, whien the old dems ‘No those vaults (puinting to the basement of. To the first of these pa cr we say from up of a government independent of the We.were.present at a mase meeting-op the plated We ni “Francisco, we a Tees in the: month -of “April, 1650, when ‘John B. Welter gave utterance to the treason. There ‘are dozeds of ‘men in the State whu, were present and know the facts. A steamer had just comb ia bringing the information that California was refused admission into the Union.” An indignation meeting was called anda nixed crowd from almost every nation on the globe assembled. The stand was nearthe vld Gastom House on the plaza. John B, Weller caine upon that stand and tulmsiusted nothing but trenson and lies. He talked of the abuse California was receiving from a Whig Administration, ia not. being agogue and scoundrel knew that Zachary Taylor, a Whig, had urged the admission of our. State, and a Democratic Congress re~ fused compliance with bis wishes, The fault longed to Democrats as every mtzlligent aan knew at the time. He paid he had been appointed to survey the boutidary hne between the United States and Mexico, but a. Whig Adinipistration had neglected to turnish the means and he had been obliged to pay the expenses of the commission himeelf out of higown pocket! Those who know how profusely the means furnished him by Government were squandered by him iu 1849, would not have wondered if a check had been put upon bim by any Administra« tion, but the idea uf his paying*twenty-five dollars out of his own pocket is absurd. Warming up with the rot-gut he had imbib-~ 0d before going on the stand, and his real nature getting the upper hand of his prudence, John B, Weller went on to denounce the Government in unmeasured terms. He said it was unw®rthy of support, and it would be ‘an act approved by God und man to “haul dowi that flag, (pointing to. the stare and stripes waving from the top of the Custom House) and seize upon the revenues the building) and apply them to the supporte of an independent goveroment on the shores: of the Pacific.” Some cheered, but your “Unole Fuller" called for dornicks and hunted industriously for_aaupply. Col. James Collier, Collector of the port, crowded to the front of the stand :n few minutes after, and paying a glowing tribute to the American. flag streaming above, declared, with an eye that flashed with determination and. a Yoive full of. meaning, that wo treacherous hand should touch that banner while ‘he lived to’ defend it, There are many men in this State who are knowing to all these fucts, The charge was . thrown in the teeth of Weller in this city once while he was on the stump. He denied it then, but afterwards owned he did aay the sauve thing but that it was coupled with conditions, But there was no “if” in the: treasvhable speech of the demagogue.
