Following is a list of my principal informants. The letters preceding
h name are used in this report whenever I have occasion to give the sources
particular statements.
Sam Kesler. About 65 years old. A full-blooded Indian born in £1 Dorado
County. Lives north of Smith Flat, about three miles from Placerville.
His wife, a mixed blood, proved also to be a good informant. Address:
R.F.D. #1, Box 26, Placerville, E] Dorado County.
Hattie Tom. A very old woman, said to be "over 100". Full blood. Born
in El Dorado County near the South Fork of the American River about
15 miles northeast of Placerville. Is an aunt of Sam Kesler and, at
present, is an inmate of the County Hospital, Placerville. (Died
Christmas 1928.)
Charlie Padilla. About 55 years old. Mixed blood. Married to a cousin
of Sam Kesler. Lives on a reservation betweel E1 Dorado and Kingville,
about eight miles southwest of Placerville. Address: £1 Dorado, £1
Dorado County.
Mary Hunter. About 70 years old. A full-blooded Northern Miwok woman.
Born in Amador County. Lives with her two mixed-blooded sons in Pleasant
Valley, 14 miles southeast of Placerville.
Jim Dick. The head man at Auburn but exercising influence as far south
as Placerville and as far north as Nevada City. Sam Kesler's uncle.
Born at Cool, £1 Dorado County. Address: Box 144, Station A, West
Auburn, Placer County.
Lizzie Enos. About 40 years old. Mixed blood. Born near Bowman, Placer
County. Her husband is a full-blooded Nisenan. They live on the
reservation at Clipper Gap, about seven miles north of Auburn.
Frank Suehead. 68 years of age. Full blood. Born at Forest Hill.
Lives a mile and a half west of Colfax. Address: Box 316, Colfax,
Placer County.
Jane Prout. About 75 years old. She claimed to be a full-blooded
Nisenan, but it is possible that she had some White blood. Born near
Colfax. Lives at Road House, about a mile and a half north of Colfax.
_ I -Dick Childs. About 65 years old. Full blood. Born in Yuba County.
Lives about a mile west of Nevada City, Nevada County.
