Tue Waterville Mail says that Mr. Sidney
Howard, of Winslow, has a flock of ten
sheep that had lambs in tlie early part of last

new $2 each.’ A profitable yield of stock

A Mopern Ark.—The Navy Department has called for proposals for-the construction of one or more iron-clad steamers,
to be built entirely of iron, and to be about
7,300 tuns burthen. The bids will be re
ceived uatil the 24th instant. This indicates
that the Department desires to pursue the
work with the utmost dispatch. Some idea
may be formed of the size of the ship, com
paring it with vesseis now afloat. Steamship Atlantic is 2,845 tuys; City of Washington, 2,408; Baltic, 2,723; Adriatic ,4,146;
Arabia, 2,700; Union (just launched), 5,000;
General Admiral (Russian frigate), 5,000;
Persia, 3,300; Vanderbilt, 3,360. Of our
naval vessels, the North Carolina is 2,633
tuns, and the Ohio 2,757. The Dunderberg
and Dictater, now building, will be 5,000
and 3,033 respectively; the Roanoke 3,435,
and the Ironsides 2,436. Of the iron~clad
vessels of Europe, the Achilles is 6,070, and
Agincourt 6,621. These are the two largest
slay,

two samples of paper made from corn husks
