mf ‘wee evan Duiky Transcript. Nevada County Official Press. a SATURDAY MORNING DEC. 27. LIBERTY DKWHA:—Since the day when the cultivation of cotton in the Southern . States became profitable, civilization has; been going backward in ‘wil thefair region that produces the article. In the days of our fevolution ali the leading statesmen of the South regarded slavery as en evil to be} checked rather then extended, and to be de-' atroyed if possible, rather than fostered — Washingtor, Jefferson, Mason, and scores cof other leading Southrens of the time, made bold to speak of the injustice of haman slavery, and to express a hope for its extinguishment. Gradually, as slavery became profitable, the sentiments of slave owners, aod of whites who have been associated with . the institution, have become changed, until; the leading minds of te-day would assert that . slavery is an institution of Heaven, benefi. cial to the slave and the enslaver, aud the . base on which government ean only securely . rest. Gradually as the opinion has been gaining strength, so, gradually has the slave and the . . podr whites of the South become more and more ens!aved. That the anetucr-tic classes of the South, those who have property invested in human @esh thats iv a high degree productive; bringing in ite thousands annually to its owners, and enabling them to live in luxurious idleness, should be attached to an institution that gives them wealth, ease, refinement, and position, is not altegether strange. Large self interest, te say nothing of the effeets of association and edeicat.on. would naturally wed them to the institution that yielded them the benefits. Bat how the poor whites, whose cvadition is wise from the existemce of slavery, who ate debased by * it and rendered poorer, as free labor-as mude degrading, can be so blind as to tuke up arms to defend the cause of their abasement and misery, is beyond explanation, aud turo~ ishes one item of evidence that manis note what he has been claimed by philosophers to be, a reasoning animal. In the whole slaveholding region of the United. Statesthere are. less than four _huné dred thousand slaveholders. Not one pergonin ten owns property in others, and the few we it at the expense of the many.— What would Kenweky bein five years it every slaveholder were banished from her borders.acd not another one allowed to enter the State? Pruperty of all rational descrip~ . tions would rise in value and Kentucky would make giant atrides to rival Ohio in wealth and populstion. Nothing but slavery. keeps that noble State in the back ground. Her non-glaveholding people.do not understand their rights dnd interests. Neither do the niggerless whites all over the land of rebellioa comprehend the suicidal course they are parsuing in supporting the aristocracy, The step is death and degradation to themselves ; because if their dream of a Southern confederacy be realized, the civilized world , willnever permit the African slave trade to be re-opened, and the majority of the poor whites must remain niggerless, while the aristocrats, cut loose {rom the restraints and checks of the democratic sentiment of the North, will lord it the more potently to the farther injury of the poor whites. Bat no separate government is going to _ exist to be ruled. by the aristocrats. ‘The ‘emancipation prociaination about to ‘be iseued is of great impertance ‘to the South, the country and the world. -It disenthralls ‘Rot less the millions of poor whites of the South than the blacks; it frees the country from the odium of fustering human bondage ; it starts with new iapetds the cnus® of freedom and progress in which all mankind have an undying interest. Roll swiftly «n, oh Earth, in thy diurnal course, and usher in the day of all days'in the new year, when free: dom shall be proelaimed throughout the land. SworpD For Hooker.—J. W. Tucker, the Jeweler of -San Francisco, has just completed a ewerd for General Hi oker worth between three and four. thousand. dollars. “Gen. The shootdng was the result of an old difficulty, and took place while. the parties were on horseback.
