' ' teers t# This is dreadful weather for Lokalitums. His explorations have to be earried to places where the slush is so deep, wnd his boots are in such a dilapidated condition that his feet have not’been.dry since the storm set in. Why didn’t Santa Claus, instead of giving him candy, present him with a pair of water tights? ‘Well, it’s perhaps not well ta gruinble, and he hopes Santa Claus won't be vffended—only the next time, if it makes no ‘difference to him, he might bear this in mind. Bankert's No. 6’s ’ll do. _ All the items, now-a-days, are snow items. The caving in of the New York Hotel has set all the property holders on Broad street te shoveling the snow off their roofs, which nakes it a-very picturesque looking scene— provided, however, you stand: from under. A big shovel full of half melted snow, thrown from the top of Kidd's brick building, is not a very pleasant thing to receive on the top of the head; is Lokalituins can assure you. ‘Ye Gods! His Christian spirit makes him feel ashamed of the exclamation whieh escaped him. He looked up, with yengeanee im his eye—ouly; however, to see another mess coming down, which he had barely time to dodge. Fortunately, no one happened to be *hy to laugh at his misfortune—had there-been any one there is no knowing to what excesses his ite would have lead him. Lokalitums would suggest that the poor Chinamen; have been snow-balled enough. Chinatown has literally been besieged since the storm set in. Nothing short of famine will induce. a Chinaman to leave his house, und when he does leave it he recommends his soul to his Josh, and his friends light the wax-eandles which are no doubt intended to light him the way to ‘the Chinamen’s paradise. Last aioe 4 they stood a regular assault from the outside barbarians, and though their doors were firmly barricaded, they suffered considerable damage. Their drug store was well nigh demolished. This is carrying the fun too far. The roof of Temparance Hall gave way, partially, under the pressure of the snow. The damage done was not serious. The stable of Mr. Worrell; of the Eagle saw mill, was crushed also by the snow ;— but as he has plenty of lumber, the loss don't signify much. Barns and stables, too numerous to men_ tion, have been crushed in various parts of the town. If is to be feared that dite roperty wi'l suffer to a considerable extent, ba the breaking of ditches. With proper attention, however, much damage ean be prevented. ; Ee” We noticed yesterday afternoon, hanging from the baleony of the National Exchange Hotel, a beautiful painting, descriptive of the united Siamese twins. It 1s the finest thing of the kind ever unfurled in Nevada. Its dimensions are 40 x 60 feet, and the painting is in oil. ; By the way, we must congratulate Messrs. Chang and Eng. on the selection of Mr. Pridham for their agent. Few companies are so fortunate in securing an agent at once so efficient and gentlemanly. NE CALIFORNIA PICTORIAL ALMANAC.—A copy of this very neat and instructive calendar bas been sent us, by the publisher, E. L. Davidson, of Sacramento, for which he has our thanks. Besides the twelve monthly calendar tables , it contains a great deal of‘information, peculiarly interesting to Californians, which constitute it an excellent book of reference. Thickly interspersed through the work are many well executed wood cuts, illustrating scenes and industrial processes, purely Californian. It ought to be well patronized by the almanre users of the State. te The robbing of door plates: and signs has become so frequent, that Lokalitums feels constrained to eal! attention to it. He thought at first that the thing was done in the way of a frolic, as he himself has had some experience, in times gone by, in. the transposition of signs; but in such cases one man’s sigan is always found stuck on some other man’s door, which mukes the. whole joke of the matter. But here the signs are torn away, for no other purpose, apparently, than to gratify a spirit of vandalism, as they can be of no use to the rehhers. EF On. the occasion of Tom. LaFont’s beuefit, at Ashmore’s Melodeon last evening, the house was crowded full. Lokelitums is of the opinion that even me 3 eran ene impravement. in ormance, Sr Labons tecstnd himself in all the various ts he performed. Miss Lotta, a sweet ittle songstress, danseuse and actress, did , and Lizzie Smith was as clever as will be ia Nevada this change Hotel. Their reception or exhibition room is No. 39, Broad street, next doar, east, . to Kidd’s banking kouse. ‘They will remair } until to-morrew evening. The people of Nevada have now an opportunity of witnessing the greatest physiological wonder in the world. . Mrs,.Jutia Dean HaYNne.—This talented lady—the Siddons of America—is now } Playing at Placerville. We learn that shé wil, ere long, gratify her Nevada admirers with: her presence. a: > é ; fe On the 20th inst. seven feet of snow was on the summit of the Placerville and Carsoh Citgmoad. All hands were out try-. ing to make the road _passuble. A good deal of snow has fallen sineé the 20th: ee amen ne Scientific, Press publishes an engraving and descriptiou of a patent floating bridge, invented by Thomas Seofield, of Nevada eounty. It oan be used either for bridges, aqueducts, wharves, or telegraphs. SEAMLEss Caps—the most fashionable and finishing touch to a gentleman’s cabasa— have lately been introduced into this city. A. Block & Co., has a large lot of these caps on hand, and is selling them at a very low price. THE Dear CHILDREN.—Queen Victoria and Albert have -nine children—four boys and five girls. These are all, except the Princess Royal, who married the Crown Prince of Prussia, to be provided with partners by marriage, and these partners must be found among the royal families of the continent. As most of the sprigs of royalty ou. the continent are poor, it will cost England a handsome sum of money to support in royal style these children of her majesty. DECEMBER STRAWRBERRIES.—Dr. Miller, who has an orchard and vineyard near Rattle Snake Bar, presented the editor of the Auburn Herald, the other day, with a basket of ripe strawberries, fresh from the vines in his garden. LOOK ON THis PICTrURE.—The New York Herald, in an article upon “The approaching race tor the spoils,” says: “There was rather a severe run upon Pierce, who, however, was too tough to be killed. He promised everybody everything and then allowed the people of hie kitehen ‘Cabinet to distribute the spoils. In 1856 the office beggars were comparatively few in number, as the succession made no change in the partisan policy of the Executive. But now that there has been a grand overthrow mn — affairs, the incoming President will do well to prepare himself for a grand assault, such an_one as was never before known. All the Republicans, rich and poor, expect office of some kind or other. There will beat least a million of candidates for fifty thousand. offices. Think of a million letters of application and recommendation to be read! Reflect upon the spectacle of a million of individuals, rushing about asking re in a frantic way; to “sign their papers.” Sehold Washington city in the month of March next, invaded bya -horde of hungry and seedy patriots, with very large yellow envelopes sticking out of their pockets.— Imagine, if you can, the lying, the treachery, the intriguing, the buttonholing, the jealousy, the heartburning, the disappointment, the moral filth and despair, which this shameful business of place hunting will bring about: Think of the hope deferred that maketh the heart sick and the pocket empty ; the weary waiting, as the spring glides away and the summer months: steal on, while long bills accumulate, and friends have leaned so much money that they don’t really see ‘how they can continue to indulge in that charming though somewhat expensive luxury.” SE —— ELEVATOR MILLS.
