4, x" ™ ~ “ons. Twenty-six years have wrought sve : » tthe quiet reflectiveness of age and experience. . which had been premeditated for some time ~~tmale and female filibusters. SIAMESE TWins.—These geutlemen ar rived yesterday afternoon and immediately began to receive company. Large crowds of curious visitors were in attendance, during the afternoon and evening, and all pronoauced the twins the most interesting speetacle they ever had the pleasure to look upchanges in Messrs. Chang and Eng since we Were first honored with their acquaiutanee, The impetuosity ‘of youth has given. piiehe Their English has improved, most extraordinarily, und they now appear as two natural ized American citizens, who have merged their original judividwalities in the republican circumstances. of. their adopted country. Messrs. Chang and, Eng are two-as intelligent and reived ‘American gentlemen as you can . meet, Goand see them. SuRPRISE Party.—A surprise party, back, took the residence of Mrs. Col. Whitman by surprise last night, and before the inmates knew what was coming their: domicil ‘was invaded and iu possession of the attack . . ing furve; which consisted of about thirty They did~ not, however, plunder the house, like some other parties that a Disbanded Vi olunteer used to tell us shout—for they came provided with ‘oll manner of victuals and sn abundant supply of Heidsick, which were consumed with much gusto, after which a dance was improvised, and every one had his dud her full thare of enjoyment. The TRANSCRIPT was represented by a member who did full justice to the champagne ;—he is not big; but we'll bet on him when it'comes to the wine. But a most marvellous. thing—and one whieh we cannot make Lokulitums believe, no way we fix it—is, that though the secret «of this expedition had been imparted to a large number of ladies, it was so strictly kept that no one but the parties in the plot «ver had the least inkling of it. If anybody knows of another such instance of female wecreey we should like to hear of it. Youne’s RaFrLe,—Let it not be torgotten that this raffle will. come off to-night, rain or. shine. We were looking over the “spread” of prizes, yesterday ; and, although our religious principles are somewhat opposed to worshiping at the shrine of Fortune— or, for the matter of that, at the shrine of any other heterodox gud or guddess—we ‘ could not help going in for a ticket or two. Our friend, Young, informs us that a few—a very few—tickets are still uasold. Now is your time—you that love to sport watches and jewelry without being compelled to labor _} for them—to adorn your persons with glittering ornaments for the bare investment of a paltry dollar. te" Jacob Clark, S T. Curtis and others arrived here a few days ago from Virginia «ity, via Placerville. They intend to return by the Henness Pass, rather than undergo the fatigues and miseries of the Placerville route. Their fervent prayer on the way was to meet the editor of the Sacrameuto Union, tg heighten in his experience the beauties of that. delectable route, he is so fond of gettiug travelers to enjoy. . ——Sxow.—The roade up into the higher regions of the mountains are still much impeded by the snow; though, through the kindly influenees of the suo and the determined ‘efforts of teamst ‘rs, the impediments to traveling are fast disappearing. . The sky last evening, was clear, giving promise of delight ful weather. _—_—_— te We learn tist the scarlet fever has made its appearance in this city. It ‘is confined only to a few families. Ss E. A-MaTTESON.—The Journal, of yesterday, is out, in an elaborate and well-deserved editorial, in favor of the legislature giving a tangible evidence of its appreciation of Mr. Matteson’s genius, and the benefits he has rendered the state, by his invention of the -hydraulie process of mining. Mr. Matteson, by his byfraulic process, and several other labor-saving mining machines, for which he neglected to take out patents, has unveiled millions of hidden wexlth, in the hills of California, which, otherwise, would have remained hidden forever, and we cordially join the _ Journal in recommending -his case to the } carnest and mest favorable conside tion of . the legislature. It is a remdrkable fact that Mr. Matteson, alter enabling thousands of his fellow miners. to become rich, should, himself, be poor. He must have died instantly after the wound ; and inasmuch as either ball would have caused his death, it isnot likely ‘that the shots were fired from a pistol; but itis quite probable that whoever killed him did the deed with a shot gun loaded with buckshot, and fired close to his breast. The assassin is yet nnknown, . Secession av INDIAN HILL.—A correspendent, writing to the Marysville Appeal from Indian Hill, Sierra county, gives an necount of a cuse.of secession from ‘bed and board, and the subsequent failure of cverA married woman of the place left her husband for an affinity. ‘The hnsband went, with ten of his friends, «ll armed with pistols, knives and whisky, to tear her from his rival’s arms. She answered his pacific arguments with a vessel of \hot water, and an imperative order to “ git ;” whereupon he “ got,” and all negotiations ended. The assailing party, finding that forcible mensures would be forcibly resisted, coneluded to return whence they came without more ado. . A few days subsequently, one of the fluine hands, nemed Burns, was met by some of the ten,” and fired upon in avery cowardly manner by twe persons. He had to run tor his life, and--was luckily not hit. He has since lodged a complaint against his dastardly assailants, and warrants are now out for their arrest. ‘The citizens of Indian Hill are much incensed at the attempted murder. san. Burre Creek DaM BROKE.—The Marysville Democrat learns that the recent floods have caused the dam at the mouth of Butte Creek to give way, and the water is rushing . py through at a tremendous rate. This dam was erected by the San Franciseo and Marysville Railroad Company, in order to turn off the waters of Butte Creek’ from the tule lands over which the railroad track is. to run.— Butte Creek, at its mouth, is apt to spread vent this and turn the whole body into the Sacramento river, was the object of the dam. What effect it will have ‘upon the embankment across the tules, if any, we donot know, but think it will: do no great injury. ee A Lucky Eprror.—It is enough to make one’s ‘teeth water to read John R. Ridge’s reminiscences of Christmas. Never did an editor have stich friends! Roasted turkeys . and pigs, with corpulent demijohus of wine and cider'to wash the edibles down, seem to have poured m upon our favored brother, with a profusion, only equaled by the miraculotis eoveys of quails, wherewith Jehovah fed the Israelites in the desert.
