. Gen. Blunt’s official report of the battle
of Cane Hill, says, the rebels numbered
eight thousand, that Hindman intended to
join the enemy that day, and enter Missouri.
Blunt. made a forced march of 34 miles with
5,000 men and defeated the enemy, who retreated to Van Buren. The Savannah Ga.,
Republican, states the loss of Confederates in
battle, daring the laet ten months at seventyfive thousand. Estimates twenty-five thous-and killed in battle, or died of wounds, 25,000 died from sickness, and 25,000 maimed
and ruined for life. Itadds: “If the whole
truth were known the figures would probably
reach one hundred thousand by the end of
the year.
