belief that with the present rate of taxations
and unless extra expense is incurred, the
whole debt of the County will be extinguished

Fourp Deav.J. ohn H. Anderson, of Relet Hill, was found dead in a ditch at’ that
place yesterday morning. He took his gun
and went out hunting the day before. ‘ Yesterday morning his gun was found beside the
diteh, and on going down the diteh a fow
yards the body was found. Deceased-was
subject to apuplectic. fitéd and probably died
ingne of them on Wednesday on his retura
from hunting. The body will be brought to
town to-day for burial. The above facts
were obtained from the friend of the deceased, W. H. Hazlett, of the Sheriff's office.

The Navy Department has received from
Commander Parker the particulars of the
‘recent expedition into the watersof Mathews
co., Va. They scoured the surreunding
coqptry, destroying 12 salt works.a quantity of salt, five schooners, 2 sloops, and a lot
of scows. The gunboat Seneca, was captured
off Charleston, onthe 27th of November, by
the schoone? Anna Dees, while trying to run
the bluckade witha cargoof rosin and turpentine. .
Fortress Monroe, Dec. 2d.
The Raleigh, N. C., Progress of Nov, 27th,
says rebel Gen, Smith is at Peterburg, Va.,
in command of a force .sufficient to protect
the approach to Richmond in. that direction.
The Richmond Examiner says, the next
session of the Confederate Congress commences at Richmond on the second Monday
in Januar ye.
WAsHINGTON, Dec. 4th.
Nothmg important from the Army of the
Potomac. Everything perfectly quiet;
there is no prospect of immediate moyement. .
The army is well supplied with provisions
and furage. The rebels have abont 50 .batteries, large and small, a number of them
mounting heavy guns béaring on the north
bank of the Pappahannock.

The Times, Falmouth, Va., correspondent
says, Lee is removing a large portion of his
forces southward, apd concentrating them: .
He will be able either to march to the relief
of Richmond, in case of attack in flank, or
actaga reserve in case of assault on Fredericksburg._

THREE inventions have appeared lately
says the Newburrypert Herald, that will,
perhaps, ultimately revolutionize those
branches of industry they are designed to effect, One is an engraving machine, which
produces on steel designs from surfaces, either flat or in relief, with marvelous fidelity.
The second is a spiral trowel, which, when
attached to a plowshare, cuts a round hole,
so that, in a few hours; a permamené
draining going on simultaneously. The third
is a trifle, but a useful trifle. It is a match,
which catinot be ignited by any species of
friction, nor by fire itself, but only by being
rubbed against the box prepared for its reception, which is coated with the flame-giving property. ,
