ap of Mr. Judah. His route is de@fida by men Wwhie live along the Tine of other routes. They want « railroad, every one
‘of them, to pase. by their own doors, but
Have not the enterprize to make even a survey. 1f ome company would build a Pacific
aie
Sverything is done by
parties to throw discrédit upon
through every camp in the State,
tn what a happy frame of mind we would all
our pockets and did'nt cost us a cent! Beéause witch a project replete with happiness to
the whole, country is not contemplated, the
‘press is trying to destroy confidence in the
route whieh promises to have prominence
bore others. Like the Southern rebels, the
udvoontes of some of the routes are deter‘mined if they caunot win they will ruin everybody else, The Pacific Central Railroad
‘would be teo good a paying thing for envious
‘souls to see in the hands of a Company they
¢annot cuntrol. Hence the fault-finding, the
bickerings, the dog-in-the manger enarling, of persons who are determined to
‘have their own way, do nothing themselves,
nor allow if possible anybody else tode anynes "prospect Wwoks hot very favorable for
any work being done on a Pacific Railroad
for at least a year to come. Every route in
the State has & project to advocate, and all
are intent on delay. San Francisco will
not come up and use her money, because
~ capital is naturally timid and the bugbears of
othe ‘press make it more so. San Francisco
asks for a recognition of itself as the terminus of the road, as if the irreversible decrees
of Nature were not enough without a reenactment by man of the lawsof God. San FranCisen i¢ the terminus and must remain so
while time endures. We advocate building
the firat section of the railroad from Auburn
‘to the summit. It is a wonder that some~-pody does not declare we are in favor of making that village the terminus of the Pacific
failroad. It would be just ag sensible to attempt to make Auburn the terminus ay Sac“pamento. Neither ceuld reap the grout advantages to result from the Pacific Railroad.
They must belong to San Francisco. Stop
the road anywhere, and the points between
“which travel will be. must be San Francisco
and the western end of the road, and the
profits of that travel itself must connect
those points by railway os soon as the work
~ could be done. :
Bo far ae the trade is concerned San Francisoo is notinterested in one route wore than
wpother, But her capitahste, before they
invest, want to know which reute offers the
best inducements for their money. The
Washoe trade is the great object to be gained and to the silver wines to the east of us. .
the road is bound to go, if it goes atall. We
are sure that such being the direction of the
road, either Judah's or the Placerville route
‘thust prove superior to all others. because
they are so much the most direct and least expensive to build and transport freight over.
Two summits and four mile tunnels do not
promise wuch for the Placerville route, and
besides, it has not the merit cf being accur.
tely. surveyed and cannot have till the snow
is removed from the mountains, six monthe
hence. Judah hue demonstrated that the
Truckee route is a. practicable and good
route. From every indication it is the best
of ‘all, Men can be set at work grading a
read: it. now, and before the Placerville
“or any other route, can be scientifically ex_ “dnained, fifty miles of ruad may be graded and
~ teady for the ra'ls, Six months of the Wash. @6, trade will be worth three millions of dollars to the stock-holders in the first road that
js built. The reasons for San Francisco to
‘take hold of the road at once, are many, and,
“I bave no sympathy with secession, . Yankee Lock, says:
each can feel they can depesd on the other
to fight bravely, and neither section can claim
any great superiority over the other.”
In another place the lady says: “Every
negro in Tennessee is virtually free. Those
only remain with their masters \vho have
sense enough to know when they are well
off.” She also says there are robbers in
both armies who would be punished if reported at headquarters.
Monuy Kines Met.—We read in the
Echo du Pacifique an account copied from
another French paper, of a pique between
the Rothschilds and the Bank of England.—
It seems the Bank refused to discount a
draft drawn by the House of Anselme Rothschild, of London, saying they discounted only their own paper and not those of particular parties. Three weeks after, Nathan
Rathschild, after gathering together all the
five pound notes he could find in England
and on the. Continent, presented himself at
the Bank at the morning hour, and drawing
forth a portfolio well filled, received payment iv gold. After carefully teating each
piece, he put them in a sack, and produced
another and another portfolio, continuing to
do so fur thé’'sevep hours the Bank was
open, during which time he had bagged many thousand francs. A servant removed the
acke as they were filled. At each of the
ether nine pay counters an employee of the
house of Rothschild had been likewise engaged, eo that the house during the day had
been able to drew from the Bank 5.250,000
franes in gold. and no one else could geta
place to present a check. The bankere
laughed at the pique of the Rothschild —
when he made hie appearance with his nine
clerks and tuok his station as on the day before. They laughed none at all on the third
day when the same ten made their appearance assoon as the Bank opened; but they
trembled in their boots when they heard
the King of Bankers intimate that he had
five” pound notes enough to continue hie
game two months, and that he had already
drawn 320,250,000 francs in gold from the
Bank of England, which never owned as
much. *
The Bank feared, and there appeared in
the evening and morning papers, a notice te
the effect that thereafter the Bank would
pay Che paper of the house ef Ruthschild as
its own.
