SATURDAY MORNING, FEB. 14th.
Power AND WeaLTH.—History shows
no parallel to the progress of the United
States in power or wealth. The nafions of
_poverty-stricken Colonies of the American
* gontjnent had out-stripped them in everything that makes « nation wealthy. The ru+ Tere steod in awe of the great Cullosstis that
towered above them. When the standord
of treason had ben raised in the South, and
thousands of the. North and West had left
»their occupations to maintwin the anity of
“the Republic, it was predicted that povery
and ruin would come upon us; that our
fields would be uncult:vated, and that want .
and famine would visit our people. How
different has been the result. Never has the
erups of the West been so abuidiiit. By
the messages of the Governors. of the great
States of Pennsylvania and New York, we
find that those States have even increased in
wealth, and that while thousands in men and
money have been given to the Union cause,
the State debts have been decreased.
While persons who never see good in the .
future, predict our utter ruin, the people .
-are engaged in works that prove their confidence in the success of our cause: Railroad»,
telegraphe-and-cannla are being built, and
provision 1s being made for education, that
evidence the coufidence of the people in the
ultimate success of Union arms. Not only
do our fields produce enough for home consumption, but we are enabled in time o,
civil war to sead joy ‘into thousands of
homes in England, aud from our bountiful
